The Hollywood debut tonight of Bake And Destroy turned explosive when fans started attacking LAPD officers on the scene. The opening of the skateboard movie by skate company Bakerboys Distribution was on a first come basis at the Vine Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. “People were cool but then around 830 people were hitting each other with beer cans, throwing cigs at pedestrians & starting fights,” tweeted one movie-goer of fans who couldn’t get into the packed theater “But then the line got restless and when a cop car pulled up people started shouting “ftp” and a few kids hit the car with beer cans.” Officers outside the theater from the LAPD’s Hollywood division requested back-up around 8:40 PM tonight and a tactical alert was issued for the vicinity, police spokesperson Detective Gus Villanueva told Deadline. The LAPD estimated that around 400 people were outside the Vine Theatre when the incident started. “As more officers were arriving, the officers already on the scene were pelted with rocks and bottles. I don’t know how many people were throwing those objects but more additional officers from other parts of the city were requested,” he said. “There’s a full blown riot with police in riot gear at Hollywood and Ivar. Avoid the whole area!!!” tweeted another person who witnessed the incident. Once sufficient officers were in place, the LAPD cleared the street. They shut down that section of Hollywood, as well as nearby intersections, starting around 9:15 PM. Detective Villanueva said that disturbance ended around 10:30 PM. “We are not aware of any arrests or if any officers were injured. The main group has been moved and officers were mopping up any stragglers,” he added. Bakerboys Distribution did not respond to requests for comment.

Dude this story is all backwards. We were all about to get into the premiere and everyone pushed to the door. It got out of control when the security guard started attacking some guy and all the skater jumped in to help him. We were just trying to get in. We heard “SWAT” and some people ran, but we were so packed in the streets it didn’t even matter at this point. No rocks were thrown only glass beer bottles. What do you expect bring cops around drunk skaters? Skaters and cops don’t go together because everyone things Skateboarding is a crime. No one physically attacked the cops, nothing even hit the cops. We skated in the streets and some drunk people were tempting the cops. I still feel bad for all the little kids that were there. No one even got to see the premiere, i think thats what set everyone off. Well anyways this is going down in history as The Hollywood Skater Riot of 2012!
No rocks were thrown, only glass beer bottles? Oh, well then I guess it’s OK.
And to think that this mess could have been avoided had Bakerboys Distribution simply charged $10 per admission. No need for the LAPD. The theater would have been empty. For shame!
Where would one even find “rocks” on Hollywood blvd?
My first thought as well.
Yeah, that story isn’t accurate. I work at a bar very close to the theater. Kids started lining up before 3pm in hopes of seeing the film. By 8pm there were hundreds of people packed outside, trying to get pix of the premier. Obviously, hundreds of people in front of a tiny theater doesn’t work, so the overflow was out onto the street, slowing traffic. People were standing on the roof of a car trying to see into the premier, but the scene was really calm and friendly. Seriously. Cops showed up. You know when cops show up for a huge crowd disbursement, there’s gonna be riot gear, so people started getting excited for what was about to happen. At that point, all the nearby businesses locked up/shut gates. Eventually all the cops were lined up in their gear and that’s when kids started throwing glass bottles and beer cans into the street in the space between them and the cops. Someone broke a glass heater in front of a nearby shop, and the door to the theater was broken. That’s it as far as vandalism. There weren’t any rocks and cigarettes being thrown. The cops walked forward in formation, the crowd was pushed out, and that was about it. One kid was arrested. It was all pretty calm and simple, it just took forever. …Totally unrelated, but it turns out that skaters are excellent tippers and generally better mannered than a lot of the weenies spending their money in Hollywood. So, more skaters, less riot please.
nice publicity stunt
From the comments it seems the Sk8boarder mentality is:
It’s not our fault. We didn’t throw rocks at the cops, just glass bottles and none of them actually HIT the cops so we shouldn’t be in trouble. There wasn’t MUCH vandalism, just a broken heater in front of a store and the front door to the theater. It’s not the sk8er’s fault that most of us were drunk and we shouldn’t be held responsible for ANYTHING because sk8boarding is cool and not illegal, DUDE.
Whats really funny is the thought of “skaters rioting” I am an extreme sport tv producer for a major network. I’ve worked with skaters on and off for ten years. Truthfully I find most of them to be skinny little pussies zombified from smoking weed all day. They dont have ‘riot’ in them. I agree with Scott if they would have charged for the film, no one would have been there. Skaters have no money.
yea skaters have no money… just look at rob dyrdrek and p. Rod and plenty other skaters that make bank from riding a piece of wood. I dont think any skater that commented on here had the mentality that they did nothing wrong and shouldnt get “in trouble.” it says there were no arrest so no one got in trouble. I think the comments were just pointing out that the news report was inaccurate like most media. I think this is an excellent marketing stunt from Baker! cant wait to see the video! Andrew Reynolds IS GONNA KILL IT DUDE!
Hey Mr. Tv producer, fuck you sir.. Do not generalize all skateboarders as “weed zombies” you prick. We are very capable of riots, and peaceful protest, among other things. You piece of shit arrogant motherfucker. Fuck you and your undisclosed tv network. We are Skateboarders. We made history in Hollywood. I was there. You were not.
Son, Thomas Edison made history. Jonas Salk made history. You did not make history. All you did was show your immaturity.
dude….chill.
“We are spoiled little middle-class narcissists play-acting that we’re Chicago in ’68. We made jackasses of ourselves in Hollywood.”
There. Fixed that for you, buddy.
“We threw stuff but not AT anyone and we only broke a few things.” And you punks think this is acceptable? Really?!
Oh my god get over yourself. Whats so badass about pushing yourself around on a board with wheels on it?
This is the single weirdest story and resulting commentary I can recall on this site. Love it.
I believe my report said I am NOT a skater. I only witnessed the entire thing. What you read is a factual report of what I saw to compare against the article and news stories. *shrug*
Nothing is badass about pushing around a piece of wood. But let’s see ya try grinding a 17 stair rail or throwing your body down a huge gap till you land your trick. Then we’ll see who’s “badass”. We do things on a daily basis that people couldn’t even dream of physically doing. So if skating isn’t “badass” then the rest of y’all must be exceedingly wimpy
You can’t tell someone not to generalize then say “we” are capable of this and that and how “we” made history etc. You places all skateboarders into a group then made GENERAL statements about them. Isn’t that generalizing in itself as well? I’m sure there are upstanding skaters put there, but there are bad ones too, like any other group of people. A better argument would have just stated that we aren’t all like that without using other generalizations to prove it. It’s just a bad argument.
I came across this scene during an after dinner stroll on The Blvd and if the heavy handed, antagonistic attitude the cops had toward random bystanders and passers by was any indication… no wonder they had a potential riot on their hands (though I never thought it technically escalated to anything near a riot)… It’s also no wonder the cops had to cover their flank to prevent being over run by the bystanders they antagonized… With one uptight and obviously shaken rookie type waving the barrel of his beanbag shotgun towards the gathering crowd as he hysterically deplored them to get back on the sidewalk… It’s one thing to hold the weapon… another to deliberately point it in a haphazard manner…
A less oppressive spectacle and more thorough crowd management would have gone a long way toward diffusing this incident…
Just an observation…
Where was Avril “Sk8ter Boi” Lavigne??
Why? Because skaters wouldn’t have $10???
@scott Why???? Because skaters wouldn’t have $10???? You do know most skaters have jobs. How do you think we buy those $300 plus dollar decks, trucks, wheels etc? Here’s a word for you Scott….ignorant!
I think the point was to get the facts of the story straight, not to say that it was morally permissible to throw rocks. But that no bottles were thrown.
Ugh I don’t think you know what it’s like to break your collar bone down some stairs I dont think skateboarding is badass I think skateboarding has saved millions of kids from selling drugs and joining gangs so talk bad all you want skateboarding is my life and no dumbass Alabama fan is gonna tell me otherwise Roll Fucking Tide
Ugh I think you’ve never expirenced the pain of breaking your collar bone down some stairs. I agree skateboarding is not badass but it takes a whole lot more balls to jump down a 15 stair than throw a football. Yes there are some pricks in skate boarding but there are also some really respectful people too. My view on skateboarding is that it’s saved way more kids from selling drugs and joining gangs than the usual argument “you scraped some paint off that bench I was going to replace anyway you people are satanic monsters” actual argument that was made against me when I was skating in a PUBLIC park. Skating is my life so if that gets in the way of peoples Roll Tide mentality oh well..
