EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros tells me that — technically speaking — Legendary Pictures “was never officially in” to co-finance Tom Cruise‘s futuristic world army-vs-alien fighters sci-fi film currently filming in London. But then why was Thomas Tull’s banner listed on WB’s October 1st announcement dating All You Need Is Kill for 2014? “Anticipated their involvement but was never firm,” WB tells me. So this is what I’ve learned: the movie’s UK production was just notified within the past 24 hours that Legendary “has pulled out” of
Warner Bros’ All You Need Is Kill starring Cruise and Emily Blunt with Doug Liman directing. Actually, Legendary’s decision was made about 10 days ago – after Warner Bros begged Legendary to come in with Village Roadshow. “Legendary agreed to come on subject to terms. That meant subject to script, budget, and creative mandate,” confirms my insider. “But then Legendary decided it doesn’t fit within their creative mandate or fanboy demographic and they didn’t really have the appetite for this. So they didn’t come to terms with Warner Bros.” I’m assured that the Legendary-WB relationship is still very much intact, especially with Legendary having brought Pacific Rim and Godzilla to the studio while co-financing Man Of Steel with Warner Bros. Meanwhile, there are vehement denials of behind-the-scenes chatter that Liman is over budget or Cruise is running the show. All You Need Is Kill is dated for March 14, 2014.

Interesting that Legendary’s pulled out. My money is on worries about Tom Cruise & the budget, which has a way of exploding when an “A-Lister” takes control.
Good move Legendary!!!
Tull is notorious for being cheap. Thomas Tull wants a big return for putting little money in. Tull will only piggy-back off of Warner Bros if movie is well known or if Nolan is attached and can guarantee him some notoriety……
Still the worst title of the year.
Pull out of thus but say yes to another Godzilla. Oh yeah real smart. Lol
I would rather have 10 more Godzilla films, then another film with Tom Cruise.
Besides Godzilla needs a proper American Adaptation to let us forget about Emmerich’s Jurassic park of a rip off Zilla film.
Tom Cruise is in control? really, that’s news? Of course he’s in control. There is no other star like him and, love him or hate him, it’s hard to deny he’s a global box office draw. That benefits him certain luxuries.
Make SPECTRAL.
What was Spectral about?
Tom Cruise is a global box office draw? Really? I guess someone forgot to tell KNIGHT & DAY that.
You’re absolutely right. But I think they were too busy talking to MI:4, War of the Worlds, and every other movie that Cruise was in.
Knight And Day crossed $200m worldwide because of cruise’s overseas boxoffice power. And even they earned minimal profit also.
Hey Tom Tull, show me the money!!
Creative mandate lol
I can’t believe he pulled the plug on Paradise Lost, and who thinks The Great Wall is going to happen?
Did someone say Cruise control?
Whether you love or hate Tom Cruise…the man is a legend.
Legendary wants to expand but needs a powerful board of directors and a degree of oversight — this flip flop is a true PR blunder because if the movie succeeds everyone will know Legendary passed on the opportunity. This company has a lot of potential but it is very clearly run on the whims of one man and his ego — which has never spelled success for a diversified creative business.
I can’t wait to see this movie!!! I love Tom Cruise movies, and he is a good guy.
I think Legendary saw JACK REACHER, saw how awful it is, knows it will probably tarnish Tom Cruise’s career, so pulled out.
jack reacher looks atrocious…
I knew this would happen. Seeing a film being co-financed by Legendary AND Village Roadshow right out of the gate seemed strange to me.
If memory serves the only film Legendary AND Village Roadshow co-financed with Warners was ‘problem child’ production Where The Wild Things Are.
But I have a feeling that this might be down to WB’s still taking baby steps with Village Roadshow and their new financial arrangements than the film being ‘in trouble’ so early in production.
Also I’ll bet a crisp TWENTY note that the title of this film changes before it’s released.
um, the old Hollywood studios did some good work under the “whims of one man and his ego.” more recently, Bob Shaye and Harvey Weinstein come to mind. not saying Tull is any of these, but there is precedent.
Knight and day still made more money than dragon tattoo, or cowboys and aliens, and Diaz had more screentime
Actually Reacher is get good reviews from test screenings bitch!
