Lena Dunham’s proposal for the book Not That Kind Of Girl reached $3.6 million last night. Her lit agent Kim Witherspoon from InkWell Management is working the deal, and it should be finalized soon. The numbers for the book of advice and anecdotes from the UTA-repped 26-year old creator of the HBO series Girls should go even higher as publishers see her as an influential creative voice for young women. She met yesterday with editors. Stay tuned.

No talent. HBO spent big to try and convince people Girls is watchable (they managed to buy those Emmy noms for this lousy series) and that Dunham has any talent. Cash in now because in two years, no one will know or care who she is. And the 12 people that actually watch the show will have moved on…
So, Lena Dunham is a white woman in her mid-20s who is writing, directing and acting in her own show on arguably the best cable network ever and it’s driving people batshit crazy. And don’t couch it in, “I wouldn’t mind if it was actually good.” There are plenty of untalented people in this town who make huge paychecks. Get off your couch, stop watching “Girls,” take all your negative energy and create your own work.
Haters, schmaters. Who cares? The simple fact is that this book will NEVER earn out. Not if it goes for $3.6 million.
People are talking about haters this and haters that… But try and sit down to really read and think about what these “Haters” are saying.
TINY FURNITURE was dry. It was… I forced myself to watch it because Lena was getting buzz based off it and I needed to see what the buzz was. I still have 20 minutes left of the movie to watch that I’m in rush to get back to.
GIRLS is not original. It’s not unique. Maybe the tone of it interests people because it’s calling to those who are soaking up the hipster, indie vibe a little too much and want their life to be high off it. It’s not a terrible show. It’s also not the hippest thing in the world because instead of moping at home, she decided to blast “Dancing On My Own,” and have a dance fest, and that’s SOOOO aweosme and relatable.
VOICE FOR THE GENERATION? Really? Are we still trying to find voices? I don’t care anymore about people in TV or movies representing who I am because being me doesn’t illustrate that already. I want people to just entertain. I think we’re in an age where we are defining who we are PRETTY clearly, with the help of social networks.
BUT… I will say that Lena is a good writer. I’ve read essays and whatnot, and I like it. There is something about her that I like and can’t shake. I watch GIRLS, not focusing on what I said about it above, because I wasn’t expecting anything. I believe she can do worthwhile pieces. But with all this publicity, she will continue to push out the mediocre “TO THE GENERATION WHO SOAK UP INDIE” material and won’t grow.
I want to see her grow because I think she can.
While I agree that some of these comments do lend themselves to sounding “hater”ish, there are valid points. As a woman in the biz I’m proud of Lena’s accomplishments. But Dear God she’s not THAT funny. I tried to sit thru the first episode of Girls and found myself waiting for it to be over. 3.6 Mil for her ADVICE? Jesus. Nepotism be damned, I just don’t find her interesting. And I’m not the only girl who feels this way.
Terrible show. I just don’t get how it got picked up for a second season. None of my female friends watch either, in fact, the only person I know who watches it is a straight single guy from a WASPY family. Maybe I’m missing something.
I think some people are misunderstanding. She never said THE voice of a generation, just A voice. Grammar school will tell you there’s a big difference.
Remember when the Juno lady was the “voice of her generation”? Also, what really counts as a success on HBO? 872,000-viewer average? I mean I know it is pay tv but come on…Hung got better numbers but was cancelled. O
