Lena Dunham has admirers and a fair share of detractors too. The enviable 26-year-old has a hit HBO series Girls (Season 2 begins January 13), and she’s a successful author with a multimillion-dollar book contract. But who knew her YouTube video ad for President Obama titled Your First Time (see below) would draw the level of wrath it has from conservative pundits. A small sampling follows. Breitbart.com Editor-at-Large John Nolte tweeted “How could a president with two young, blossoming daughters release an ad as disgusting as this”? Fox News’ Monica Crowley called the ad “vile, stomach-churning, super-gross.” Redstate.com’s Erick Erickson said it was “further proof we live in a fallen world destined for hell fire.” Which might explain why Minnesota Republican Party deputy chairperson Kelly Fenton wrote in a since deleted tweet, “#MyFirstTime ad by #Obama is similar to an ad #Putin did. They must share the same advisor: #Satan.” Dunham’s response? “It tickles me no end that while my twitter feed was blowing up with conservative hate I was literally hanging out in a pile of bisexuals.”

A candidate appearing on-stage with Kid Rock and actively courting Donald Trump’s endorsement has much more class and dignity.
It is pretty tacky.
Also, she looks EXACTLY like Judd Apatow.
What’s wrong with this ad? Conservatives just ITCHING to find a reason to hate?
I suspect the ad had a net negative effect on voters, if any at all, even among women 18-22. That makes the ad, by definition, a failure as a political ad. If however, the real purpose was to draw attention to the ad maker, it is a great success.
Both candidates suck; the only person who sucks worse than either of them is Ms. Dunham – she’s a talentless hack who is enjoying her five minutes of fame. She’d better save a few bucks from that book contract, because she has all the makings of a fast-flameout.
Still slogging away trying to break into in the business, are we? The bitterness is starting to show, by the way.
Just because you have an opinion about the marginally talented Lena Dunham doesn’t mean you’re bitter. Nepotism and artificial buzz define her “career” so far. I’m part of the what’s-the-big-deal crowd concerning this confused young woman. I hope she and her “fans” go away soon. Her act is tiresome.
You should grow so confused one day. As to nepotism, the charge makes no sense when applied to her. Utter nonsense.
Not sure what this “artificial buzz” is that you speak of… perhaps this genre of humor doesn’t appeal to you, but many people I know watch her show. As someone who is part of her targeted demographic, I honestly believe she will be sticking around Hollywood for a VERY long time.
..not conservative here…it was in poor taste, just bad..the phony innocence etc etc..sorry to say it made want to have nothing to do with Obama…but I’m not a 19yo girl…maybe it will appeal to them, but I hope they are better than that, whoever they vote for, God help us if a ad like this sways anyone.
If this ad is what turned you off of Obama, then you really never must have been a supporter to begin with. Really. Come on. This trifle of an ad is more offensive than an actual candidate being taped dissing a large segment of the population as hangers-on and under-achievers???? That kind of real-life drivel from again an actual candidate–Romney, if you need help with it–should be the defining moment in turning your attention and interest away from a candidate. Get some perspective already.
Heating bills are cheap in hell. We will no longer rely on foreign oil.
Overrated. I hope she would go away already. I don’t see her as a voice for any generation and I am younger than her.
The maker of TINY FURNITURE salutes a tiny President.
She’s a brilliant writer and filmmaker, but FURNITURE is about a college grad stuck living with her Mom while working in a restaurant. If that’s not a film about this economy, what is?
Hahahahaha… Made me laugh. Seriously though that’s some irony isn’t it?
“I wanna be the voice of my generation. Here’s how messed up my generation is and all the problems we’ve been experiencing over the last for years as I came out of college and tried to make it in the real world. But as messed up as I’m saying everything is… I’m okay keeping it that way.”
Nolte’s point is right-on! The REAL problem isn’t the snarky ditz that made the ad — it’s the candidate (who himself has daughters) approving it that is the REAL headline-grabber!
I just can’t wait for the Hollywood-left loses their golden idol on Nov. 6th. Now THAT will be entertainment!
Well of course since you’re on the right you also think the ad is bad.
As the man once said:
Much ado about nothing.
Anyway why do certain people still have problems with ANYTHING that comes even close to SEX?
GROW UP!
Amen. Definitely falls in the category of “Much Ado About Nothing.” Seriously. As I said before, Erick Erickson, Monica Crowley, Kelly Fenton—Swallow your hyperbole without a glass of water and choke on it.
Why would you feel the need to say it twice? It was not very inspired the first time.
You’re a child. Grow up. I don’t care if you’re liberal or conservative. If you only like people who think the way you do, then grow the hell up.
Hollywood is this country’s biggest export. A president who is unfriendly to the industry will hurt the national economy big-time.
I have two daughters and fail to see how this ad is in the least offensive. I think the word I would use to describe it is cute. That’s about it. Anyone who was offended by this desperately needs to loosen up a bit.
Tim W., the question to ask is, would you let your two daughters do this video? And you’d be proud of it?
What precisely–and be precise and explicit in your examples–is so offensive??
Lena Duham is 26 years old. Are you saying a parent should dictate what their daughters can and cannot do when they’re 26?
Lena Dunham can keep thinking she convinced any undecided voter to vote for Obama with that ad if she wants to. She def isn’t the voice of any generation.
She never claimed to be a voice of her generation. It was Hannah that was making that claim and Lena Dunhams writing was making fun of Hannah.
Meanwhile Clint Eastwood probably DOES represent the Republican party very well: Old, cranky, 70+ White guys.
Smiler, you say that “Old, cranky, 70+ White guys” represent the Republican party? What do you call Marco Rubio, Susana Martinez, Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley then? The GOP has more women and minority governors than the Democracts, how do you explain that?
Uh. Really? They are the examples you wish to use to spotlight the GOP’s shining stars? Oh, boy. They are clearly people who are self-hating. They represent diversity is all I can see. And the GOP isn’t interested in diversity outside of grabbing the votes of those diverse groups. Hispanics? Women? (I’ll leave Jindal out of it.) What precisely is the GOP going to do for these groups. If you had to stop to think about it for even a second, then you had to think too long.
I find the ad cute and not the least offensive. What I find offensive however, is those of you commenting that are unable to simply disagree with her opinion which is what a healthy democracy is all about. It seems the conservatives of today need to demean even a sweet young woman in order to make your point which is????
LOL! Conservatives really need to understand their whole problem with women has nothing to do with the Democrat media machine. It has to do with their policies and actions. This whole outrage thing for this ad isn’t gonna make you look women friendly dingle dorks. Please come to the 21st century and embrace VERY light humor.
If voting for Obama is like the first time you have sex, it’s very difficult to lose your virginity twice. A flailing, pitiful campaign has now adopted Queen Victoria’s supposed wedding advice to her daughter: “Lie back and think of England.” Lie back and think of America. And then get up and get dressed. Who wants to sleep with a $16 trillion broke loser twice?
Uhm, if you were under 18 in the last election, then this is the first time for you.
I guess simple math, as well as a sense of humor, is something the conservatives lack.
The situation in our country–record deficits–47 million on food stamps–isn’t funny.
Watching conservatives squirm and hand-wring and triple-down on their misogyny in their predictably, typically asinine way isn’t just funny, it’s hilarious. As is the typical squirming they do to try (and fail) to change the subject by bringing up the topic of deficits and food stamps that they’re never concerned with when there’s a Republican in the White House.
Rachel: at least get your facts right. President Obama inherited a 10T dollar debt from the Republicans and had to add to it in order to bring the economy back to where it is. He had to do that without the help of the Republicans in Congress except a couple depending upon the legislation. Their goal, as publicly stated by Mitch McConnell, was to ensure that he would lose this election and the way to do it was to obstruct everything he proposed and then blame him for a failing economy.
However, he was able to bring the economy back with a stock market that has doubled since he took office, 5.5 million jobs back though 8 million were lost from the recession, equal pay for equal work for women, health care coverage, and host of other legislation that actually helps people, ending the war in Iraq, winding down Afghanistan war and helping seniors with the cost of prescription drugs. This man has done a lot and instead you prefer a man who changes his position on issues over and over so one cannot predict what he might do when in office.
He has stated that he will work to reverse Roe vs. Wade. Under that law women can choose abortion but they do not have to do. Every woman has free choice. Under the Republicans, no woman will have free choice. For people that do not want government making decisions for them, it baffles me how you can think this is just fine with you. They have proven in state after red state that this is what they will do. In several states a doctor is already forced to do an ultrasound without the free will of the woman and in few it is a vaginal ultrasound. Can you even imagine how that would make woman feel if she is pregnant as a result of a rape. It is not a necessary medical procedure but the Republicans don’t care.
You are free to choose to vote for the Republicans. Just make sure that you know what they will be forcing all women to do, not just the women who support their position on the issue.
Republicans talk about the $16 trillion deficit like Bush didn’t have anything to do with $10 trillion of it. Oh and by the way, add up the deficit from the last 24 years of republican presidential control and you will be surprised at what you find. $6 trillion is nothing in comparison.
““vile, stomach-churning, super-gross”
Really? Did we watch the same ad? I have a daughter about to be born and I would happily show her this ad. It boggles my mind how conservatives get repulsed at the very SUGGESTION of sexuality. They really should get their own country somewhere so they can not have sex and breed themselves out of existence and leave the rest of the world at peace.
You should move out the country! The ad is awful!
The ad is awful? So’s your grammar. You should move into a book.
AC,
What a childish and dumb comment.
But the comment they were replying to wasn’t?
So funny:)))
No you don’t understand. What is vile in what she said is that she compared losing her virginity to voting for Obama. Which is not only vile but downright bizarre.
She didn’t “compare” anything. Comparing would be “the first time I voted was like the first time I got laid.” She’s not doing that. She using the terminology typically associated with the one to talk about the other. It’s using comedy (whether you think it’s funny or not is your own business) to sell a point.
And seriously, I don’t care if you’re Democratic, Republican, or whatever…if you took any offense at what she said here, you’re an imbecile, a prude, and would probably be much happier living a few centuries earlier.
Metaphors confuse you somehow?
Right and this bunch are the first ones to cheat on their wifes/husbands.
Anyway they think by putting this nothing ad down they’ll get more votes for Mormon Boy
Conservatives only hate other people’s sex. Their own is fine and good and righteous – it’s the sex that everyone else is having that must be stopped.
Hate??? Sex??? Who wrote the Hate Crime laws??? Why isn’t rape sex a Hate Crime??? They’re, their with that grammar comments. Bet your image making skills suck.
The cons are trying way too hard here. It’s a cute video. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s hardly Showgirls.
Reagan made the same joke 35 years ago. On a democrat finally voting republican, he said something to the effect of “it only hurts a bit the first time.”
Exactly! For a party that damn near worships Saint Ron they certainly have a very selective memory when it comes down to stuff he actually did or said.
Here’s the quote from Reagan, in 1980:
“I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute and then it feels just great.”
So, here are three things I wish the right could acquire:
1) Perspective
2) A grip on Reality
3) A love of Facts
However, the right seems predisposed to dodge all three of those things these days. So I suppose I’ll just have to get used to them spouting off hypocritical, fever-dream nonsense again and again… as they lose another election again.
More accurate depiction is that both both parties use similar tactics to maintain or gain power. Facts and reality are in short supply in arguments on both sides.
Lena Dunham is a genius and an incredibly talented writer. Tiny Furniture and Girls are both amazing.
Agreed.
The ad was adorable. Lena has an off-beat charm and for all the haters out there, she’s going to be around for a VERY long time.
Go, Lena! With your quirky, weird ass self!
and this is this the best she could come up with? More proof the left is not as smart (talented) as they think.
Regardless of one’s political opinions, it was a pretty tasteless ad, beneath any presidential campaign especially a sitting president.
I didn’t hear anyone saying that when ronald reagun said the same thing. But maybe you’re right–he IS burning in hell now.
Please, spare us your conservative sanctimony — Ronald freaking Reagan himself said this exact same thing to reporters as a sitting President. Laughing, joking about how Democrats can vote Republican, it only only “hurts a little” when you do it “the first time” and “then it feels great” ha ha with a shit-eating grin on his face the whole time. And this wasn’t a surrogate cutting an ad, it was a sitting President in front of gaggle of reporters. Go watch the clip.
Get so tired of Republican sanctimony and hypocrisy, this stuff always cuts both ways.
Reagan disagrees.
Reagan basically cut the exact same ad, he just used the same words and the same jokes and didn’t bother using surrogate.
if romney and the repubs are “god’s party” and the outcome of the election god’s will why are they so worried?
Correction: Hurricane Sandy was an Act of God, which helped Barack Obama look more presidential and bipartisan in a time of uncertainty. Therefore, Obama’s reelection is God’s Will.
So be it.
Hopefully Obama is a one-night stand!
This. Makes no sense.
There must be something wrong with the embedded link when I load this page. The video I get is somewhat unfunny and a tad annoying, but certainly not offensive or disgusting.
I guess I’ll have to dig around on YouTube to find the offensive Lena Dunham Pro-Obama Ad. My guess would be she talks to camera for 60 seconds and lies about things like the evils of a national healthcare, tax break for the rich and how to balance a budget. That would truly be disgusting.
“I know what it’s like to pull the Republican lever for the first time, because I used to be a Democrat myself, and I can tell you it only hurts for a minute and then it feels just great.”
Ronald Reagan
Can someone help me figure out how close of cousins are the phrases “pile of bisexuals” and “binders of women”? Not first, certainly, maybe not second, but it feels like the same family to me.
lol she’s funny – why people so serious – not like she’s running for anything
Really? This woman and Obama piss you cons of this much?
From a branding ad point of view: it’s a truely bad political ad. What makes it bad is that it’s over the top. You don’t have use words like virginity for example to get your political point of view across. Humor that’s open for interpetition. Now I’ve seen negative ads worse than this one but this add comes across as amatuerish. High schoolish and she doesn’t make any real points. I’ve seen political adds on boths sides that are better than this one and she isn’t the 08 Obama girl either.
You should comment on the actual video created, not the one in your head. Lena Dunham NEVER uses the word “virginity” in the ad. Not once.
What is wrong with this ad? Seriously, Lena Dunham was trying to escalate the hype around her with her recent success and now everyone is ripping her for it? Everyone had to see this solely as a political ad, but I hope someone else out there saw this a a great comedy/publicity stunt.
P.s. I thought it was pretty funny.
I’m not sure that reducing a vote to a list of cool things on the back page of a text book is a message that should be approved by Barack Obama. This is the new meme they’ve been pushing : voters are too distracted to recognize anything but the most minimal of knee-jerk Pavlovian information. Obama did it himself at the end of the Jon Stewart interview. He rushed through a list of the terms of the election – like a sneak preview tweet of the next four years of his presidency – it started with “war…peace…” As if there isn’t a difference between the two. The important thing is that you wanna make sure that you get the opportunity to see what happens. I found it completely amoral and bizarre.
“‘war…peace…’ As if there isn’t a difference between the two.”
That sums up one major difference between conservatives and normal people: normal people don’t think peace involves bombing the hell out of everyone not like us. Perhaps…just perhaps…if we didn’t bomb the hell out of so many people overseas for so long, they wouldn’t be united in trying to destroy us. But alas, we have…and so they are…and so the cycle continues.
the first time i heard this was on the radio, i was like, did i hear that right? it was a bit off putting and a little weird. do all we women think about is getting free contraception? we’re not worried about the economy and feeding our kids? are we that shameless? oh, by the way lena, obama didn’t get osama bin laden. that team special ops team was put together during the bush administration and it took obama 16 hours to decide whether or not to go in, so i wouldn’t give your guy too much credit.
First of all, Tweelde Dee, no one has suggested or requested “free” birth control. The issue is over whether insurance companies would be required to provide coverage for it. When your insurance, that you’ve paid for, covers part of the expense of visiting your doctor, do you consider the doctor visit “free”?
Second, whether contraception, and all sorts of other women’s health care, is covered is directly related to the economy! Women who can’t avoid getting pregnant can’t hold down jobs consistently. Get the connection?
Sheesh.
Wait, so a bunch of old men making decisions about women’s bodies based only on their religious beliefs doesn’t outrage Republicans but this silly little ad does? Actually, that sounds about right.
Oh look, John Nolte is whining about something. In other surprising news, water is wet.
That is an absurd comment. I just had a dry martini and it was VERY dry.
