Lena Dunham has admirers and a fair share of detractors too. The enviable 26-year-old has a hit HBO series Girls (Season 2 begins January 13), and she’s a successful author with a multimillion-dollar book contract. But who knew her YouTube video ad for President Obama titled Your First Time (see below) would draw the level of wrath it has from conservative pundits. A small sampling follows. Breitbart.com Editor-at-Large John Nolte tweeted “How could a president with two young, blossoming daughters release an ad as disgusting as this”? Fox News’ Monica Crowley called the ad “vile, stomach-churning, super-gross.” Redstate.com’s Erick Erickson said it was “further proof we live in a fallen world destined for hell fire.” Which might explain why Minnesota Republican Party deputy chairperson Kelly Fenton wrote in a since deleted tweet, “#MyFirstTime ad by #Obama is similar to an ad #Putin did. They must share the same advisor: #Satan.” Dunham’s response? “It tickles me no end that while my twitter feed was blowing up with conservative hate I was literally hanging out in a pile of bisexuals.”

Obama knew nothing about this ad it was done by a PAC and you’ll notice at the end it never said I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message. The right wingers are afraid of sexually liberated women it frightens them for some stupid psychological reason.
However the ad really is stupid and idiotic. It’s aimed at college girls and 20-somethings because Obama needs them to turn out en masse if he has any hope of winning.
It’s a stupid ad paid for by a PAC that’s desperate to motivate Obama’s young base to go to the polls to vote for him. He’s completely failed to score with independents and that’s where elections are decided. Romney has a 15 to 20 point lead with independents in most of the swing states.
It was paid for by the Obama campaign not a PAC. Just because the candidate doesn’t appear at the end doesn’t mean that his campaign didn’t approve and pay for it.
Here’s the thing: everyone has the right to express their opinion. That applies to celebs and non-celebs alike.
BUT just because you have that right doesn’t mean you have to exercise it in everyone’s face. Frankly, I’m tired of left and right celebs telling me what to do or how to do it. All they really should tell me (and everyone else) to do is VOTE. Once we are in that booth, it is our decision. Not Michael Moore, Donald Trump, Kid Rock, Lena Dunham, Bruce Springsteen, or anyone else.
I may watch your movies, television shows, or buy your music, but that doesn’t give you the right to give me advice. Your success in the entertainment field doesn’t give you the gravitas to advise voters on how they should vote. I am more than capable of making up my own mind. As a staunch independent, I vote for the best person for the office, not the party. (Granted, these days, there are fewer and fewer seemingly qualified candidates running for certain offices.)
Celebrities have just as much right to advocate a candidate as anyone else. Yes, it’s your vote, and you make up your own mind, but they can say this is why I think you should vote for Candidate A.
Their movies don’t give them that right. That right is endowed by their Creator and codified in the Bill of Rights.
I thought the ad was blah and pretty desperate – and I am a Democrat.
You might not be in the age group they are trying to reach, 20 something college kids.
Oh please. It was all in good fun. I thought it was pretty funny personally. People like to get worked up over nothing.
Dunham’s video is her clever style, light-hearted humor comparing her first time voting to first time sex. What’s the image that comes up for you?
That’s why the Right Wing is upset? Oh, right, they would rather talk incessantly about “legitimate” rape, rape conception as a “Gift from God”, and incest. What’s the image that comes up for you now?
This ad implies that in order for young women to come of age, they must vote for Obama, or for that matter that the essence of their womanhood is contained in having that “first time.” It is chauvinist and exiguous in its perception of women. The person Lena Dunham addresses in this ad is certainly not the type of person I want as the leader of this nation.
Hyperbole
I love reading from the coordinated sites that claim conservatives are attacking her over the “sex” part of the ad…no, it’s more about how pathetic and desperate the Obama campaign has gotten and quite honestly, Lena isn’t really cute to begin with. Being “sexually liberated” pigeonholes women into either A) Pro abortion/Pro Birth Control (pick one please) or B) Not pro abortion/pro birth control. Women aren’t that stupid, unless maybe this ad is aimed at women on the left and they assume they are…?
But nice try…I hope they keep playing actually.
The ad is supposed to be cool and hip, but it really looks stupid. This doesn’t relate to the “great unwashed” nation wide, just the 18-49 demo and I bet THEY think it stupid.
Chuck, you really need to spend some time working on your grammar and sentence construction. I disagree with your point of view but am most offended by your butchery of the English language.
Well, she has a right to express her opinion. Then again, she was 18 and eligible to vote in 2004. I guess Kerry wasn’t enough for her to give it up and vote for him.
I don’t know what message that sends.
That’s not the kind of ad put out by a campaign that’s winning. It’s the type of ad for a campaign that’s losing and is GRASPING.
Delightful and charming endorsement ad. She haas won me over. Go Lena!
All libs ever think about is sex.
Except it wasn’t by the campaign, it was by a PAC.
The ad probably only appeals to a small group (20-somethings with a sense of humor), but it works when aimed at our demographic. All the people getting upset are self-righteous zealots who think sex is disgusting unless they’re having it (which is probably not often) or just conservative pundits that after 7 weeks they have completely bludgeoned the horse to death in Benghazi by politicizing the murder of 4 Americans to the point of numbness. Faux outrage on a new topic.
Folks. Time out. Reality check, please. This ad is not targeted at anyone who would be reading or posting on this site. It’s an entirely different demographic.
That video is the first good thing that hack Dunham has ever made. Republicans just don’t tend to like anything remotely sexual unless it involves God wanting women to get raped.
How is this ad even remotely offensive? I was expecting something truly salacious. Uh, yeah, pretty tame. Man, the Puritans’ certainly did a number on this country. Get over it!
Typical conservative overreaction. Obviously embarrassing behavior but the ad is a pretty desperate attempt to get young voters. Both sides were ridiculed by the people involved here.
Tame.
Really tame.
I’m going to go watch some Sarah Silverman political spots on YouTube.
All of you conservatives/tea partiers are welcome to come along.
So, un-bunch those panties and let’s roll!
Lena for Prez! Roomney for Pez!!!
Guess what? Lena did not even vote her “first time.” She was, um, busy. So typical.
She should enjoy her 15 minutes of fame while it lasts because stuff like this she is posting is only going to hurt her career instead of helping it and in the end, she’ll lend up like Gosselin and the Jersey Shore people did…Canceled and looking for work.
You want to bet on that one?
I watch her video for the entire one minute. She didn’t make me laugh seriously. She didn’t try use humor to convey her point across but she has chutzpah for her creavitity I give her credit. But I did watch the video for the whole minute. One question why didn’t she do it longer to get longer? Why I ask that question is the fact she tried to convinced undecided voters; why didn’t she do it longer? One could view it as unconvincing arguement which fell flat.
Please, Democrats, keep running these kinds of ads. Please. Please stay the course, keep running these ads. Oh, and please also give Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid lots more airtime. They are really super effective advocates for Dems.
Please.
Perhaps you don’t know how hbo works but at this point she has five or six seasons of her show if she cares to continue making it.
Although with no party nor spectrum affiliations I will say conservatives consistently come across as the most crazy and out of touch. So you have that going for you.
