The Lifetime original movie Steel Magnolias delivered big ratings in its premiere last night, drawing 6.5 million total viewers to become Lifetime’s third-most-watched original telecast ever. It posted the network’s best delivery since 2006 (Life Is Not A Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story). Steel Magnolias, a television adaptation of the play and 1989 film with an all-black cast, also became the No. 1 two-hour cable movie among total viewers since 2007.
Starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah and also starring Phylicia Rashad, Adepero Oduye, Condola Rashad, Jill Scott and Alfre Woodard, the Sony Pictures TV-produced film averaged 3.2 million adults 25-54, Lifetime’s best delivery in the demographic for a movie in 17 years — since the 1995 premiere of Almost Golden: The Jessica Savitch Story — and a cable best since 2006. Among women 25-54, Steel Magnolias, executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, is Lifetime’s most-watched movie in network history with 2.5 million viewers, a cable best since at least 2004. It also averaged 3 million adults 18-49 (cable’s best since 2007), 2.4 million women 18-49 viewers (cable’s best since 2010), and a 4.9 Household rating.
Steel Magnolias is the subject of a lawsuit by a producer of the 1989 feature but premiered as scheduled after a judge on Friday denied an injunction.

Good for Lifetime! The movie was quite decent. 25th November 2012 they’re gonna break their all-time record with “Liz & Dick”. Good or bad, people are gonna tune in to see Lindsay Lohan after her 2 years break from doing movies (I know in reality it feels like forever).
Not so fast – Magnolias was great but it was always a classy project – Lifetime should immediately scrap Liz & Dick and Anna Nicole Smith movies to avoid ratings hits and bad reviews. Ride the magnolia wave with better projects.
the ANS smith could be halted as production hasnt begun but ‘L&D’ has already been filmed & there is a giant ad in times square NY.
You’re dead wrong…Liz & Dick bombed. Lohan’s career is also done.
Not bad! Went in with zero expectations and was pleased overall. Sure, it had flaws. I’m sure other commenters will point out each flaw without restraint. I would just rather say, “Not bad.” Kudos to all involved. Maybe these numbers will open a few doors for more true-to-life stories being told with an Af-Am cast.
I can’t wait to see how many people will running out to the video store and buy the DVD when the Steel Magnolia become available. I would love to see more original film in the future.
This was a great movie…the casts did an awesome job being that this was a remake from 1989…
Really enjoyed the movie and my cousin Tory Kittles playing Jackson! Everyone did an awesome job! Best person in both is weezer to me! Great job guys!:)
For some reason I was thinking this was going to be a Lifetime TV series.
what are( or is it were?) the ratings fro Sa 6 Oct ABDUCTED: TEH CARLINA WHITE STORY ?
You know it’s no secret Hollywood and the television studios are desperate but Christ, is there any talent left at all? Rip off a half baked movie from the 90′s and spin it by adding an all black cast then double up the ratings to hide the movies failure in the midst of a lawsuit for ripping off the original move.
Nice work boys, nice work.
I love Queen Latifah
Hope she’d make comeback to film – a worthy one
Very good remake and the actors did a wonderful job. It brought tears to my eyes same as the 1989 version.
i thought it sucked. absolutely awful
Being an African American woman I thought the movie was awful. I Don’t know any black women who talk like Jill Scott did, Just so country.
I love the original movie and think it should have been left alone. To me that is like trying to remake “Driving Ms Daisy” with a black woman and a white driver,or Fried Green Tomatoes with a Hispanic cast. Some movies are about the times as well as the people. Please leave some of the classic alone. Try “Gone with the Wind” with a Black Scarlett, It just would not work
While in general I like Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, and Alfre Woodard, even their participation in this project does not change my opinion that this adaptation of “Steel Magnolias” was HORRIBLE!! I looked forward to it so much and ended up disappointed in it even more. … And even though viewership ratings were high, I’m pretty sure that there are many (like me) who watched it in the hope that it would get better as it progressed- but it didn’t. The folks at Lifetime really made a Big-time mess of an iconic movie and play. What a waste of MY time! … I’ll say it again: Horrible!!!!!
I totally agree with you! – I work at a predominantly black school in Louisiana… .about 50 miles from the setting of this movie. I have seen the play and the original movie. I talked about the Lifetime movie – my kids watched it… Now I want to play the original movie in class!!! – it was so much more moving than this Lifetime remake!!! I have cried every time I watched the original – no tears shed with this! This was a totally racially promoted movie – use black actors/actress to get a targeted audience to watch! The actors/actress are repeating the lines – or at least trying too! Too bad Lifetime failed to make it half as good!!!
The remake was absolutely awful. Period.
THE MOVIE WAS AWFUL. I have seen the original version every time it has come on -not one character in this remake was believable. What a waste of such a strong cast of beautiful wonderful characters. The move is so bad I am not even sad – no emotion coming from the characters to make the audience feel anything. Epic FAIL.
just watched this on Lifetime (10/13/12). It started out sounding like the play (I’ve been there in community theater) but ended up like a movie and I cried through most of the end. Updated and shows the ravages of diabetes. I love Queen Latifa and Alfre Woodard–great cast and movie. I’m white, so sue me.
Well….I cried! I’ll be…..(my former post still applies…just not as bad…i wont watch it twice tho)
i really love the movie it was a great job they did and the end was sad but the the mom was happy after.and she said that her daughter told them not to cry for her and the end jackien jr was a beauitful baby.
What a trainwreck and waste of some wonderful talent. It seemed most were reading a script, no emotion, no feeling, blah, blah. This is a really sad remake and I am really surprised considering the great actresses involved.
Would like to buy the new movie to see it at a letter date. It had up to date issues. When will it be out on DVD
how can anyone think they can do better than shirley maclaine
As a young teen I loved it! Queen was amazing as well as Alfre,Phylicia,Condola,Jill, and Adepero. Queen Latifah is my idol she was perfect for M’lynn. I can’t wait for her next film!
