After setting up six projects at ABC, the ABC Studios-based Mark Gordon Co. is venturing out with a drama sale at CBS and a comedy one at NBC, both produced by ABC Studios.
The CBS project, Darkness Falls, brings together the key auspices behind long-running procedural Criminal Minds — CBS, which airs it; the Mark Gordon Co., ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, which produce it; and the series’ executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer. Messer will write and executive produce Darkness Falls with fellow Criminal Minds executive producer Janine Sherman Barrois. The project is described as a character procedural that will explore the complex dynamic of an FBI psychologist and a homicide specialist as they journey into small communities around the country to solve the darkest, most twisted single murders. WME-repped Barrois will serve as showrunner, with UTA-repped Messer continuing her duties as the sole showrunner on Criminal Minds. Gordon and Nicholas Pepper also executive produce.

The NBC project, Spinsters, will be written by Cougar Town co-executive producers Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein, who executive produce with Gordon and Andrea Shay. It is a single-camera dating comedy about three modern-day spinsters and the one guy who might be able to help them. Spinsters stems from Pietrosh and Goldstein’s overall deal with ABC Studios. The duo is repped by ICM Partners, which also reps Gordon.
Darkness Falls and Spinsters join Mark Gordon Co.’s six other broadcast projects sold so far, including Sex Diaries, Dirty Girls, Pros & Cons, Gothica, a family drama co-written by Bob Daily and Pierce Gardner, and soap Vain from Holly Sorensen.

Janine Sherman-Barrois DESERVES this. So talented. Much congrats to her.
LOVE Janine. Amazing Writer. Great Personality.
WAY TO GO, JANINE – MUCH DESERVED!!!
GO JANINE! It’s about damn time! Finally, one for the good guys.
Show runner…about time…this so awesome Janine Sherman Barrois writes the best episodes on criminal minds. I CAN’T WAIT to see this new show!!
Congratulations ladies. Janine, you are such a great role model. I am so excited to be following you on Twitter. Good stuff.
Congrats to Janine Sherman-Barrois and Erica Messer… Two more women you need not find in a binder! Kudos to the networks and Mark Gordon for recognizing their talents!
Wow! This show sounds similar to what CM was originally suppose to be about. That is until MESSer and JSB got a hold of it.
On the plus side I hope this means that JSB will be too busy to write anymore episodes for CM. I think some of CM’s worst episodes have been written by her.
You are a complete idiot.
I agree. JSB is most definitely the worst writer on CM. She understands neither the characters nor the premise of the BAU. She is incapable of writing with the focus on the profilers rather than the unsubs and she often relies on shock value and gore to carry her episodes rather than really interesting, cerebral plots. I’m overjoyed that she’ll be leaving Criminal Minds. I wish they’d bring some of the great earlier writers back like Andrew Wilder and Oanh Ly and also replace Erica Messer as show runner. Erica’s not doing a good job now. How much worse will it get when she has another show claiming her time.
Chrissy and Jess rock! I’m so happy for them, Andrea and NBC. High hopes for this one!!!
Erica Messer rules. I caught her panel at the Austin tv festival, she is definitely the most underrated show runner in Hollywood today!! She’s a super star on the rise. Good for you girl!!
Erica Messer has done a fantastic job as a writer and now at the helm of Criminal Minds. I can’t wait to see her new offering!
