The union’s complaint is that its performers in 7 years haven’t been given a pay raise or healthcare increases on these live-audience network shows. So the AFM is protesting outside The Tonight Show, Dancing With The Stars, Today, Good Morning America, The Late Show With David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. As audiences lined up for the shows, musicians affiliated with AFM Local 47 (LA) and AFM Local 802 (NYC) handed out leaflets that read “Give musicians fair pay for fair play”. Other affected shows are American Idol, SNL, the Oscars, The X Factor, Last Call With Carson Daly, The Voice, and awards shows like Emmys, Golden Globes, Tonys, Academy of Country Music, and People’s Choice.
According to AFM, the musicians on these shows last received a pay raise in 2005 when CBS, NBC, and ABC last approved a new contract. Negotiations on a new contract began in late September but the networks are demanding major concessions before wage hikes are even discussed. AFM president Ray Hair points out that compared to singer Mariah Carey’s $18 million fee to judge American Idol this season, the cost for hiring all musicians for all shows, all season, would cost only about half of that amount. “Instead of appreciation for what we do, we were met with demands for unjustified concessions that have angered the musicians,” Hair said. “Actors and stagehands get raises every year, but musicians are left out in the cold.” Talks resume next week.

The Media Conglomerates, are having their best years ever. Romney’s 1% country club crowd that run the networks who give themselves raises, need to step up and support the talent that makes these shows what they are. I am not in a union. But this is why we need unions, look how hard it is for these people to get a raise with a union. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get a raise without one.
Give me an f-ing break. You think Republicans run Hollywood? What alternate universe do you reside in?
James, I think you missed the point. It’s not a Republican versus Democratic issue Skip was trying to make. The people that negotiate the contracts are not the producers of the various shows that people often refer to as the liberal democrats who run Hollywood. The reality is that media conglomerates are the enities that are negotiating the industry contracts. My guess would be that the head of those companies are more likely to be republicans but that’s beside the point. The bottom line is that the media companies are making more profit now than ever and the below the line players are being forced to make concessions at every contract negotiation. I see it as a troubling trend. I’m sure the heads of the conglomerates see it as a positive one.
At the same time… I’ve wondered why the talk shows have bands. Most don’t and I don’t see a need for them. I watch daytime shows that have no music and it doesn’t affect me one way or the other. I don’t know how much they make but you certainly cannot compare their salaries to someone who brings the audience in. That being said, 18 million is insane
As an actor who has had the good fortune to work on SNL a few times, I just want to say that the musicians are amazing. They send that show into the stratosphere! Respect!
Musicians are right on this one. Time to give them the bucks. Will be difficult on “Tonight” though since they are cutting $$$ like crazy there.
Nothing requires these shows to have ANY live musicians. They can fire the bands at any time. or downsize. Even if a raise is attained, guess what? they will cut the size of the live players by 20-30% to make up for it. See what happened on Broadway with the Local 802 musicians. Get a grip. Also Leno just had his salary cut by 50%… and NBCu laid off a ton of day-to-day workers on the Tonight Show.
First Musicians get stiffed by Record and Publishing Companies on contracts. They make 2/3rds of sweet FA. Heck they even stiffed the Beatles. Then they argue about protecting copyright, invent and introduce the CD, digitize the creative rights community, fail to make such technology secure and lose bazillions of artist’s royalty earnings. Oh buy the way if you want to burn illegal downloads, use our Disc Burners. The Record Companies settle for 3/4 billion dollars with everyone from E-Donkey to Napster onto Kazaa, and not much for the creators of their wealth. And the Publishers, sit on their behinds. Shhh … look busy and outraged and do nothing. So what should musicians expect? Who represents them and what have they done lately, for all the dues paid. Musicians are in no position to make demands, they are all replaceable, if not by others then machines. Music talent is a spiritual commodity more appreciated live and that’s where the bucks are, they can clone digital music; it’s available for free, but not the great musicians of the world. Make that your stand, thats your show, excel and forget about ‘what you deserve’, no one is going to give it to you not even the basic performer’s performance right and remuneration. No payment for you US artists, though most of the world does pay for this basic copyright value. And the President and his opponent say, well never or we’re working on it. How hard after all these years. Make your vote count, make the candidates / Party provide a legislation payment every time your performance is played on radio in stores, on the plane, on TV wherever. Money is being collected for your US performances on records everywhere around the world, but you’re not getting any because you don’t have a similar right. Millions and Billions could be helping the US economy and the earnings we’re discussing here. But NO Performance Income for you US Musicians and your leaders say ????
Reading some of the comments here I wonder if people will notice when music is gone from these productions.
Those who don’t appreciate should just do away without it. Let’s see how willing is their crowd with playback music.
