UPDATED: It looks like the series finale of The Office next spring will wrap the stories of all characters on the Emmy-winning workplace comedy. I’ve learned that NBC will not be proceeding with The Farm, its planned spinoff from The Office. The project, starring Rainn Wilson, was to be introduced as an episode of The Office this season before launching as its own series. That episode will still air. NBC is not commenting, but rumors about The Farm‘s demise started circulating just before lunch. Wilson then confirmed the news on Twitter. “NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show,” he wrote. “Had a blast making the pilot – onwards & upwards!”
The timing of NBC’s decision is surprising given that it comes before the spinoff episode has aired. The spinoff, created by Wilson and former Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein, has Dwight (Wilson) living at the Schrute family beet farm and bed & breakfast. It co-stars Majandra Delfino, Thomas Middleditch and Tom Bower. There are three other comedy projects in the works for next season that are toplined by Office co-stars, including two half-hours executive produced by The Office boss Greg Daniels — a Harris Wittels project at ABC starring Brian Baumgartner and a comedy starring Craig Robinson and written by The Office‘s Owen Ellickson at NBC. Additionally, The Office‘s Angela Kinsey and Rachel Harris star in a comedy, which has a put pilot commitment at Fox.

More incredulous NBC decision making to even put this into development. This Greenblatt regime is a ticking time bomb.
they might actually be the worst comedy execs in town…even worse than Fox. This regime could go down as having done more damage than Silverman’s group.
Huh? Under the Greenblatt regime, NBC has gone from third place to first (and from fourth to first if you exlude the Super Bowl). For the first time in years NBC has a pulse.
Sheer accident . Not because of the Low level comedies
Never saw it (obviously), but it can’t be any worse than half the sitcoms NBC has on now.
Sadly, you’re wrong…if NBC ever decides to air this awful episode of television you’ll see what I mean.
Now I really want to see it. Hopefully it leaks onto youtube someday so I can enjoy the so bad it’s good lunacy of Shrute Farms.
Actually, the pilot was shot as an episode of the Office, and it will air, so no other leakage is necessary.
Wise move.
good call by nbc though the office never should have lasted this long. it jumped the shark years ago and will finish weak.
Schrute would be too much to take as the main character in a sitcom. A little of him goes a long way. Glad it’s not proceeding.
No great loss. NBC needs to clean out its schedule as the year goes. Maybe they current leadership at the Peacock are reading Warren Littlefield’s recent book with an eye on restoring the quality we all enjoyed once upon a time.
So…they’re finally putting Dwight Schrute out to pasture?
Anybody? Hello? Is this thing on?
Sadly it wasn’t funny – so NBC is smart to pull. Rainn will go on to do more fun(ny) things.
Hey CR: ” This Greenblatt regime is a ticking time-bomb?” You probably should take your head out of your ass long enough so someone can tell you that NBC hopscotched from 4th place to first in the ratings. Now don’t you feel like a fool? Don’t think this regime is going any place too soon.
Thanks to Sunday Night Football and The Voice. The network will tank back to fourth by the end of the season. Do your research. It’s still in the dumps.
I agree . The comedies aren’t helping one bit . Maybe they woke up
At first, I was surprised. But the more I think about it, the more I understand NBC’s decision.
Look at how The Office’s ratings have sunk since Carell left. If folks aren’t jumping at the chance to see Dwight now, why would they later?
Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if NBC is trying to move away from shows like The Office and Parks & Rec.
Agree with previous comment….Littlefield’s book should be mandatory reading for anyone in NBC Programming from P.A. and above. The Office was never a “belly laugh” show and paled in comparison to Will and Grace and Seinfeld. A spinoff of a mediocre show starring an unappealing actor ? Good call. Anyone notice that NBC is very much on the comeback trail, while ABC’s loaded with duds and shows that have jumped the shark years ago ?
Will And Grace was a “belly-laugh show” but The Office wasn’t? I suppose if you’re a dog, since I recall most of the dialogue on that show being screeched at a level too high for human ears to pick up.
Beets, Bears, Bambi, Battle… not gonna make this show. LOL. Sometimes I make myself laugh.
Thank. G-d. No way to make Dwight suck faster. Remember the geico caveman show?
Just include the pilot as part of this season’s crop of episodes and then close out the show properly in May.
… which is what they are doing. Did you not actually read the article?
We’ve seen characters change to fit new circumstances. Easy enough to do with Rainn’s character in a different environment interacting with a different set of supporting characters. Coulda been the American version of Fawlty Towers.
The good news here is Rainn’s free to stretch in a different direction now. Onward and upward!
The show was DOA from the moment the concept was conceived. Who wants to spend the next five years of their living watching Dwight Schrute’s adventures on a beet farm slash bed and breakfast? And NBC did not have to look too far into their archives to be reminded of the colossal failure another spin-off of a lesser character from one of their comedies was: JOEY!
Considering how pitiful the numbers for The Office are these days, why would NBC want to keep any shred of it going??
Dwight Shrute, Cosmo Kramer and Steve Urkel walk into a barn…
CIK (coffee in keyboard)!
It’s been so fashionable to get on the “I Hate The Office” hipster train; but the truth is that it still has a beating heart, and humanity, and that always makes comedy sweeter. I still adore it, just like I adore “Parks and Rec” for the same reason. It’s easy to criticize, and be snarky; much harder to actually put these shows together, and make them work like they do. With Daniels back this season, there have been some genuinely subversive and bittersweet moments, but I guess most of the instant opinion sheep haven’t taken the time to even check in…
I agree. Still a big fan, and we’ve been streaming the whole run again from the top via Netflix and it holds up. Seasons 3 and 4 should be put in the TV comedy archives for all time, but I like them all, including the post-Carell shows.
And why did James Spader not get lauded for his performance as Robert California? Watch his episodes again — he’s incredible and whoever wrote his dialogue knocked it out of the park.
In conclusion, suck it haters, The Office still entertains and it will be missed.
The Baumgartner and Robinson “pilots” are DOA, as well. Mercy f**k script sales as the Office ship goes down.
sounds like the spin off to the bob newhart show of the 70′s
You have no idea what was in store for you, and for you haters, you don’t deserve to know. Rainn took the ‘High Ground,’ to his credit, and sailed away with “Onward and Upward. I wouldn’t have been so gracious, but Rainn Wilson and Paul Lieberstein were great people to work with, and I’ve worked with a few.
Sail Away friends.
