NBC’s midseason mystery soap from writer Liz Heldens is changing its name again. Originally titled Notorious, the project was renamed to Infamous in May when it was picked up to series for midseason. Now NBC has settled on Deception as final title as it is reading a marketing campaign for the show, which doesn’t have a launch date yet. Deception, from Universal TV and BermanBraun, is described as an opulent soap in which a female detective (Meagan Good) returns undercover to the wealthy and troubled Lawson family she grew up in — as the maid’s daughter — to solve the murder of the notorious heiress Vivian Lawson who was once her closest friend. Co-starring are Victor Garber and Tate Donovan. Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein executive produce with Heldens.

Let me guess, market research was carried out by NBC and the finding was that a high proportion of Americans don’t know what the word “infamous” means. Cinemax’s “Hunted” was named “Nemesis” before the title change was made as a concession to the limited vocabularies of the products of the American education system.
That is what American television is about marketing to the lowest common denominator.
Never watched an episode of the UK version of Big Brother, have ya?
Lowest Common Denominator, indeed.
Revenge and Deception could be the Dynasty and Dallas of this decade.
No no… the NBC execs were like look at ABC and “Revenge” – it’s such a simple title. It’s a show about Revenge. So, let’s change “Infamous” to something cooler, more active, simple! That’s when one of their 25 year old in the corner said, “Deception.” And now that exec is one of the co-heads of Current Programming… voi la!
Funny how you all go to such a negative place. I suspect “Infamous” simply didn’t clear .
I agree that simple words appeal to the vast “grotesque populace” who may not know too many two or three syllable words. Also, the success of ABC’s Scandal (another simple word) may have prompted the inclusion of an attractive, intelligent African American hot looking woman as a leading character. ,if they only get a good plot and some writers with imagination they may last 6 weeks!
Victor Garber should bail asap. He is completely wasted on this mess.
Mick, Dallas and Dynasty lasted beyond a fourth season. Very little in common with modern soap knockoffs.
“Deception” may have been an idea conjured up by the marketing department, but they accidentally came up with a better and more dynamic title.
What, was “Blatant Copy Of Revenge” too many letters?
“Infamous” means “famous?” Wotta country!
Best. Comment. Ever.
The next revised title will be “Sneaking Around.”
Anything with Meagan Good belongs on Cinemax!!!!
For the love of God, please sell this show to CINEMAX!!!!
LOL! I will agree with you on thing, Meagan Good is sexy.
correction: agree with you on one thing
“Blatant copy of revenge” is right. LOL even the mansion they use looks very similar to the mansion from revenge, among other things.
I’ve seen the pilot. It’s awful. Plot is silly and Tate Donovan is … well, why is he employed, ever?
I am watching the pilot at this very moment. Oh just an awful show.
I wonder how long it will last. I will watch revenge over this mess any day. And that is saying something. As revenge has become one hot mess!
