After finding ratings success by bringing back the newsmaking celebrity interviews that were bread and butter for her syndicated show, Oprah Winfrey is now bringing another popular feature from The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah’s Favorite Things, to OWN. The cable network today announced that it will do an Oprah’s Favorite Things two-hour special in on Nov. 18, followed by the premiere of the new docu-series Married to the Army: Alaska. Oprah’s Favorite Things ran as a segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show from 2002 to 2010, with a one-year hiatus in 2009. It involves the audience getting free stuff from the things on the list. This time, that will be an “unsuspecting group of deserving military spouses,” according to the network. Among the celebrity interviews that posted big ratings for OWN and helped the network’s current ratings rebound, were Winfrey’s sit-downs with Whitney Houston’s daughter and singer Rihanna.

It’s not easy trying to stay relevant, is it?
Is that what you ask yourself in the morning?
In actuality it was a great original concept her syndicated show came up with, it works, it sells products, it’s not that “hard” to do, I wondered why that hadn’t done it — yet. In fact, Winfrey would be smart if she did start mining more of her vaults on items they did used to do. Last time I checked, it was the Oprah Winfrey Network. Why not? Good for them for keeping the lights on and bringing up their numbers.
My family and friends have loved Oprahs’ show for holiday time “Oprahs’ favorite things.” We have noted the special selections that suit our family and have followed through with the gifts we otherwise wouldn’t have found. As for her special audience: she has always chosen those hard working, deserving groups. I support her choice in sponsoring the Military this year. P.S. everyone who has a talk show has picked up on giving away to the audience: Ellen G, Rachael Ray etc. but I am especially impressed that Oprah chooses who is the most needy or deserving of the benefit.
How do you get to be one who is picked to receive tickets to this event…I’ve done 50 years offree volunteer work and done fostering of hard to handle teens as well as other children and always tried to be the best person I could be….but how does one get the oportunity to be there? It would be better if it was spread around more don’t you think?
A few years ago I was luck enough to have money to buy some of my favorite things and have a girlfriend party to give away things like you do. Of course I didn’t give away big items. Just things I enjoyed. One of my friends had cancer and has since died. Another has an abusive husband. One friend is 60 this year and is still spending all her free time taking care of her 92 year old mother. She never marred. One friend is not able to walk and is fighting the thought of going into a home. It was a wonderful party and even though I gave away panties, bottled cokes, lotion, booties, power, body spray, chewing gum, and fun items for their purse, they all had a wonderful time. I am so glad that I did this. We all grew up in church together as young girls and to see them age is not a happy site. I am a Louisville, Author and I have written a book about “Healing The Wounded Spirit”. That Christmas was a time of healing.
That tiny little time we had together was something we talk about often. Thank You for the idea.
