Long-time friends (and the two richest African Americans in showbiz) Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are now forging a business partnership. OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has inked an exclusive multi-year deal with Perry. Under the pact, he will executive produce, write and direct two new scripted series for a mid-2013 premiere on OWN, marking the network’s first foray into scripted programming. “I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come,” said Oprah Winfrey, OWN’s CEO. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series.”
Perry’s series debut was with the sitcom House Of Payne for TBS, which was followed by Meet The Browns and For Better Or Worse, also on TBS. The first two have also been sold into broadcast syndication, while the third has already amassed 34 episodes under the model of accelerated production developed by Perry and distributor Debmar-Mercury. Like his movies, Perry’s TV brand has been an urban sitcom with a predominantly black cast but in both areas he has been packing large audiences. Given OWN’s success with series like Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s, the network has been expanding on programming appealing to black viewers, now bringing in one of those viewers’ biggest draws in Perry. Perry’s existing series will continue to air on TBS, with all new projects headed to OWN. Winfrey and Perry previously collaborated on Lee Daniels’ movie Precious.
The deal with WME-repped Perry comes as OWN finished its third consecutive quarter of year-over-year, double-digit ratings gains across primetime and total day in the key women 25-54 demo (+63% and +70% respectively) and saw triple-digit ratings growth in September.

Does this sidestep Tyler Perry’s relationship with Lionsgate Film?
How would this be a problem with his feature films? These are television shows not feature length films. I can see if you had said a problem with TBS but Liongate isn’t an issue.
what about Debmar-Mercury, owned buy lionsgate?
thanks for reply.
TBS killed two of his series on that channel. This is a complete deal. I take it that Debmar-Mercury isn’t the distributor.
TBS didn’t kill two of his series. They both ended successfully with flying colors.
If Perry didn’t ever ask TBS to do these shows, that must mean bad blood, or just thoughtlessness.
So glad to hear they are collaborating together. Just love both of their talent and work! Can’t wait!!!
There was no mention of this at the last Black People Meeting? Why was I not informed?!
OWN would make more money airing reruns of the Jefferson’s or Sanford & Son.
That being said, this does appear to be one of the few good development deals for OWN which might work.
I disagree. It’s about time she had scripted programming. A&E, FX, History, Tvland, etc. are all doing scripted programming. People are watching. She should’ve did this from the beginning. Tired of Jefferson and Sanford when those already running on other channels. Not smart at all to re-run something on another channel. Good thing you’re the not programming director at OWN.
Hey Anti-believer,
You disagree with the humor of the first line, but appear to have skipped the second line commenting that this is one of the better development deals at OWN.
I do agree with you totally…it is a good thing that I am not the program director at OWN… I would rather eat glass.
Well good for you. Crunch, Crunch!
I mean, I get that he has a built in audience. I also get that TBS is weaning themselves of his milk. I even get that his audience would probably enjoy OWN’s other programming currently running if they knew it were there… But, still I ask, “Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???” *sigh*
You thought OWN was bad before. Yikes!
I’d hoped Oprah Winfrey would raise the bar for television with OWN. As much as I respect Tyler Perry’s efforts. His brand has lowered the bar for African American film and tv by leaps and bounds. I thought Oprah knew quality programming. How could she look at Tyler’s creations and say I want that to be on my network? Why couldn’t Oprah go to say…The Yvette Lee Bower’s or Schonda Rhimes or someone with a track record who has created QUALITY…QUALITY…QUALITY african american shows. Oh well, Angry black, abused women and their cheating husbands coming to a television near you on…… OWN !
TBS is tired of his crap and no one else was interested. Another bad move for Oprah. OWN is dead.
LOL. You really don’t get it. TBS made a ton of cash off Perry. If not, why do you think TBS bought 3 series from him? Each show filmed over 100 episodes in less than 3 years. Those episode will air on TBS for years. Perry makes his shows inexpensively. They’re all family shows that have cross cultural appeal.
Jill, have you ever stopped to ask yourself how T.P. makes his shows so inexpensively? The duress his staff and crew, even his actors, endure to make those “inexpensive” shows that make HIM millions of dollars? A sitcom episode wasn’t designed to be made in 2.5 days. Multiply that times 100 episodes and you have overworked and underpaid cast and crew. Quality programming? Maybe, maybe not.
Yes. Perry is one of the hardest working men in show business. He and Ryan Seacrest. Both of them get tons of hate. Eat it haters!
The question isn’t over his work ethic or how hard he works it’s about the QUALITY of the work he works so hard on. Perry has never been a critical success. Never. He’s successful at make films that appeal to the African-american (predominantly female) demographic and he turns a tide profit. The business reason for choosing him makes sense but it conflicts with OWN’s brand. This isn’t quality entertainment or something that couldn’t be found on other networks so Oprah’s vision of OWN is becoming blurry.
Also, this so called “hating” is equal to being a ‘Koo-Aid Drinking Sycophant” of Perry’s. Blind devotion is still blind and criticism isn’t “Hate”.
OWN IS BECOMING BET 2.0
Racist much? You have no idea what the shows will be about or who will be in the cast.
Two people with 9-figure net worths made by selling America pure, dumbed-down garbage, cynically cloaked in faux altruistic empowerment BS. Perfect match!
This reminds me of the Rosie situation? I bet it will end the same way.
SUCH A BAD MOVE OPRAH! I have so much respect for Oprah and the kind of programming she has been doin on OWN, ie. “Oprah’s Next Chapter”, but THIS is like taking so many steps backwards. I dont understand why she feels the need to cheapen her network with low-quality shows that make Black people look one-dimensional with a bunch of shuckin’ and jivin’! NOT EXCITED…ACTUALLY REALLY DISAPPOINTED!
Still don’t know what channel OWN is on my cable. Give it up Oprah.
Why does it matter that they are “the two richest African Americans in show business”??? Man sometimes Hollywood’s racism kills me. Why is race so important with the coupling statement of being rich? Ugh.
Truly disgusting. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
Get a clue! OWN is just starting to get competitive. This is a wonderful first step. Now Oprah needs to start bringing in original crossover programming so that OWN is different than BET. She can do it, she’s smart. With Lifetime stumbling all over itself, OWN has the chance to snag women of all ethnicities, even Caucasians. After all, her talk show wasn’t all Black.
i’m mad. now i can’t watch the shows because i don’t get that channel. thanks a lot.
How do I audition for the new show
In am still confused about the OWN network. I read Oprah’s mission statement, which is to provide programming to women ages 24-54. I almost feel like the network is a combination of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and her protege’s, and The Discovery Channel. Oprah doesn’t even watch that much TV? She freely admits this. Problem number one. How the heck are you going to have a TV network without knowing what’s on? It’s like me trying to write a novel without ever reading one! I’m not sure who she is listening to but she should fire a whole bunch of more people. The marketing department as a whole. I don’t know if they are afraid to say no, but OWN is not even on the social networking radar at all. Problem number two. If you look at popular sites for example…tvbythenumbers.com, Tvfanatic, Reality Tea, etc… just at least to get a buzz about a new show to get people watching, the OWN network is non-existent on any major pop culture sites.. This sites actually help networks get more views, by giving recaps of the shows on a daily basis to get people talking and watching. Problem number three, and probably the biggest one of all, No V.O.D. aka Video On Demand or D.O.D., except the Oprah Show. No Lisa Ling,no Sweetie Pie’s what the heck? That could increase her viewership by at lest three percent; if you want to talk numbers by three million more viewers? That’s a gimme, or a freebie without trying to hard. I know that if I miss a show, on most any other cable network, except Discovery Channel, it will be VOD the very next day. maybe the big O shouldn’t be running it, and just own it. No pun intended.
LOL ridiculous. Oprah may not watch a lot of television but the people that work for her and around her most likely do – seriously? Please.
I agree tp and ryan r great . Kick rocks haters . Let these people do what they have to , to make money
