EXCLUSIVE: Paul Attanasio has been set by Universal Pictures and producers Marc Shmuger and Martin Bregman to rewrite Scarface from the original draft by David Ayer. The film is a contemporary spin on the story first told in the 1932 film and then in 1983.
Attanasio’s credits include the series House, along with Donnie Brasco and Quiz Show. CAA and attorneys Melanie Cook and Cathy Halberg at Ziffren just made his deal. Shmuger is working through his Global Produce banner and Bregman produced the remake of the film.
Scarface was first done in 1932 and then turned into the iconic 1983 film that starred Al Pacino as Cuban gangster Tony Montana. As I’ve reported, the film is not intended to be a remake or a sequel. It will take the common elements of the first two films: An outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition. The studio is keeping the specifics of where the new Tony character comes from under wraps at the moment, but ethnicity and geography were important in the first two versions. In the 1932 Scarface, an Italian (Paul Muni) took over Chicago, and in the Brian De Palma-directed remake, a Cuban cornered the cocaine trade in 1980s Miami, only to be consumed by it. Ann Dvorak, George Raft and Boris Karloff starred in the original, and Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio starred in the remake.
Does the Universal library title Scarface deserve an updated version for a new generation? I’m told that when Universal put together the 1983 film, there were howls of heresy; after all, the film was considered a Howard Hughes-produced classic, with a script by Ben Hecht. Howard Hawks directed it with Richard Rosson. The remake became iconic in its own way, particularly in influencing hip-hop culture. Tony Montana’s image is still widely merchandised; his signature line “Say hello to my little friend” remains the biggest-selling cell phone voice ringtone, and Universal has sold more than 10 million DVD units worldwide.

Contemporary take? Is Montana going to be a middle class white kid that graduates with a degree in finance only to rise quickly in the banking world and ultimately destroy the economy?
this man knows.
you mean he becomes fed chairman/high level government official and destroys the economy?
That sounds about right, I feel ending with the following as a commentary on Wall Street might be appropriate –
We finally really did it… You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!
ha! brilliant
Paul Attanasio is a true talent in this industry. His credits are rivaled by few. Good work Universal.
Hopefully there is a role for the great Cuban actor Steven Bauer… he was fantastic as Manolo in the original version of Scarface…!
That was not the original version. The 1983 Pacino version was a remake.
yeah he was great, but he also died in the movie….. it would be silly to bring him back.
next
The new Scarface would have to be Russian, Haitian or African. Personally, I think overseas would be a better setting for a new Scarface, somewhere like Toronto or London.
Or Vancouver.
actually, London wouldn’t be a bad idea, and get Guy Ritchie to do it
Paul Attanasio is a great choice. QUIZ SHOW and DONNIE BRASCO are both aging very well.
As for picking a new ethnicity for the anti-hero, I’m having trouble thinking of a particular immigrant group that feels as current and authentic as Cubans did in 1980s Miami after the Mariel boatlift. Of course, we now live in a more politically correct world. The remake team has to walk a fine line. That said, I don’t hear many complaints from Russians, every screenwriter’s favorite go-to villain for the last 20 years.
This is my life story and it’s been done better than anyone could ever do it. Just watch Breaking Bad and you will see me transform from mild mannered science teacher into the new and improved Scarface.
Universal would be smarter to make a deal to finance a Breaking Bad movie unless I die at the end of the series which looks very likely. I deserve to be murdered in an extremely violent and brutal way.
Between this announcement and Attanasio’s new pilot with Greg Kinear it seems as if he
has new lease on life. Good riddance and good for him, there is still so much talent to mine there.
Interestingly, though, is that both stories are remakes.
New Tony should be Asian.
The problem here is, this already has a contemporary remake, and it’s turned into the greatest television show ever: Breaking Bad.
I wish Attanasio the best of luck. This sounds like it could easily be another ho-hum American Gangster.
Studios ceded creativity awhile ago. Remakes are essentially a mainstay. But it seems that remakes, reboots, whatever you choose to call them have accelerated dramatically in the last 10 years.
Yes, the Pacino SCARFACE was a remake, but does it need to be remade yet again? I think many audience members would say “no”. Same with A STAR IS BORN (I’m looking at you, Eastwood). FOOTLOOSE and numerous others recent remakes prove that remaking a beloved “classic” doesn’t always pan out. And if you choose to do a remake, can you wait more than 5 years after the previous version (a la SPIDER-MAN)?
Here’s an idea, suits. Why not greenlight something a bit more creative than another re-imagined harvested title? Start earning those exorbinant salaries.
David Ayer couldn’t write a Quiz Show if his life depended on it. Good move Universal.
Ha! Genius!
Its been almost 30 years. Why not, so long as the script is good. Where does organized crime originate nowadays? Mexican drug cartel? Colombian? Russian?
For once! Just once! Why can’t these legit screenwriters JUST SAY NO! To these assinine rewrites of classics? forget about the goddamn money, etc. Run!
I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, I’m too busy swimming in my pool full o’ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Someone hasn’t seen The Wire. BB is excellent but it’s nowhere near Simon & Burns’ magnum opus. Mad Men is better than BB too.
If The Wire were simply seasons 1,3 & 4 I might agree but seasons 2 and 5 bring it down.
And Mad Men? Please.
I love Hollywood’s originality. Why , do we need another remake /

And so, the greatest movies continue to be those –which aren’t being made. . .
Get those original ideas outta here..
The original was a great drama, and the ’83 version a terrific comedy. Will this be a musical?
The lead character will be Mexican, and the remake will deal with Cartels, Immigration & a willing government that covers up and assists in the crimes and brutality. Orlando Bloom will play a Mexican and will be nominated for an Academy Award. Google El Chapo…
Original scarface (capone), Tony Montana-scarface (Rafael “Rafa” Cardona Salazar), New Scarface = El Chapo.
RE: “new” Scarface screenplay–Please Do Not have the actors say the word “F*CK” over 200 times like in the 1983 Scarface…..Using “F*CK” under 20 times would make this more likely to be a PG-13 so that more teens could see it….(said with complete Sarcasm & Snark).
Why don’t they just call it something else and make another movie
New tony should be Mexican from sinaloa cartel just make a movie of chapo Guzman he’s the real life scarface
This Is a Great Idea i Just hope They Make as Realistic and Hopefully Better and Take there Time Into Doing This Movie And Latinos Love This kind of Movies .. And Its Not a Bad Idea Since The first movies was In the Era when Italians were in power and The second scarface was when also Cubans were actually coming into america and Bringing drugs .. now Its Time For The Mexican Cartel Like The Sinaloa Cartel actually Being Ones of the powerful Mexican cartel There Is in This era ..This Wont Disappoint Us . Its Also Have To Pick The Right Guy Just like They Did In scarface al pacino Fitted Great In Scarface No Doubt He made look so Real .. Hope Thay can Pick The Right Guy and Great Story line .
