Amidst talk that this is the season when the impact of shifted viewing will reach critical mass, the Live+7 adults 18-49 ratings for Premiere Week came in, giving a substantial lift to a lot of scripted series. Topping the list are ABC’s Modern Family (7.8 L+7 rating in adults 18-49, up 42% from Live+ Same Day) and NBC’s
Revolution (5.7, up 68%), which logged the biggest absolute gain, a 2.3 rating in 18-49. The dramatic increase for Revolution is especially significant as DVR gains skew heavily toward returning series, which people already have on their season passes. Revolution‘s bump was up from 44% for its series premiere as the futuristic drama’s second episode almost matched its big series debut (5.9) in Live+7. There were no changes in the standings for the Top 3 programs of Premiere Week from Live+Same Day to Live+7, as Sunday Night Football (9.0, no gain), Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory (6.9, up 38%) remained 1-2-3. But Grey’s Anatomy (5.9, up 34%) jumped a spot from No. 5 to No.4 and Revolution leapfrogged eight spots, from tied for 13th place in Live+SD to No.5 in Live+7. The two dramas pushed NBC’s The Voice down two slots as reality series tend to add fewer viewers in DVR viewing. (See charts below)
In terms of percentage gain, no program came near NBC’s Grimm, which almost doubled its Live+SD rating, up 81% to a 2.9 in 18-49 to finish as the No. 1 program on Friday night by a mile and tie such established series as CBS’ Hawaii Five-0, ABC’s Dancing With The Stars and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU.
The Live+7 ratings report delivered encouraging news for two freshman dramas that opened below expectations, ABC’s Last Resort and 666 Park Ave., which logged a respectable 3.2 18-49 rating each after a Live+7 gain of 45% and 52%, respectively. 666 Park Ave. posted the second largest percentage gain among all freshman series behind Revolution,
while Last Resort was tied for third with CBS’ Elementary. The Sherlock Holmes drama sealed its Back 9 order with a 45% Live+7 lift to a 4.5 rating in 18-49 to rank second in 18-49 among all new series behind only Revolution. ABC’s comedy The Neighbors (3.8), which premiered behind Modern Family, was next, followed by CBS’ Vegas and NBC’s Go On (tied at 3.4). At the bottom of the list are Fox’s hanging-by-the-thread Mob Doctor (1.7, 31% gain) and CBS’ cancelled Made In Jersey (1.3). Made In Jersey‘s 18% increase was among the smallest for scripted series, along with those for Fox’s Bob’s Burgers (2.8, 8%), CBS’ Partners (2.7, 13%) and Fox’s Ben And Kate (2.6, 19%). While Ben And Kate already received a back order, the small bump for Partners is concerning as the CBS comedy has been off to soft start.
Returning shows with notable gains include Fox’s Glee (3.9) and New Girl (4.3). Both added a 1.5 rating for a 63% and 54% lift, respectively. The other shows with a 60%+ gains were ABC’s Private Practice (3.1, up 63%) and DVR favorite, Fox’s Fringe (1.8, up 64%). Below are full Live+7 rankings of the broadcast series during premiere week among adults 18-49 and the Top 10 in Live+ Same Day.

Now if the nets could only get paid for these viewers than these ratings might mean something.
Nailed it.
P.S. These ratings sure do reinforce the mediocrity of THE MINDY PROJECT.
Are you kidding me? The Mindy Project is hysterical.
Actually, no. The Mindy Project is a commercial and creative failure, and about as funny as the cremation of a loved one.
Why the heck is Bob’s Burgers still on the air? Worst piece of crap ever. FOX has nothing better to replace it with but tonight they showed an old episode of King of the Hill after the baseball game and it was better than Bob’s Burgers. They’d get better ratings if they showed reruns of King of the Hill that show is still really funny.
You must be watching a different Bob’s Burgers. It is one of the funniest shows currently on TV. It’s infinitely better than the overhyped dreck called Modern Family.
If you guys could get C3 ratings then we’d really have something to talk about, otherwise this is just all PR spin.
last resort needs a better time slot
I’m hoping you understand the irony of your post made in re: an article about TV time shifting.
hmmmm…. interesting
I’m not surprised by the massive audience for MODERN FAMILY but huge numbers for GREY’S ANATOMY are a stunner. That show keeps reinventing itself and getting young people to tune in weekly. Also shocking, THE NEIGHBORS surpassing THE MIDDLE and SURVIVOR.
Kudos to the producers of “Grimm.” They are the nicest guys in the business!
“In terms of percentage gain, no program came near NBC’s Grimm”
This is due to moving the program around, and Friday night is a terrible slot. This show should be paired up with Revolution on Sunday Nights.
This is extremely interesting. Would love to see the stats for Cable & Paid. Thanks Nellie!
I’m not surprised to see such a timely article on Deadline. I think time-shifting is a crucial issue and I’m glad this website always has the scoops I’m looking for around this topic. In fact I was reading Deadline last weekend when I noticed how often DVR viewing seems to come up these days. I’m just glad Deadline is available from all my devices, since I’m always working and on the move!
