Congrats to Bob Schieffer for demonstrating that some newsmen have balls as big as the newswomen by holding both sides in check. Now can we talk about how ‘horses and bayonets’ is trending #3 worldwide? If nothing else, these debates keep providing new catchphrases for the late-night monologues. Meanwhile, I can tell Obama won because 1) the CNN focus group gave him better scores, and 2) conservative talker Laura Ingraham tweeted, “Romney using kid gloves ag Obama tonight–WHY?!” Oh, and my favorite comment directly connecting this debate to the movies comes from @AlbertBrooks: “If Romney sweats anymore I get a royalty.” Now it’s your turn to comment.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Obama… “Boo-ya”
Obama , did it, sealed the deal .. the only thing that can save romney is racism, and bias
Are you saying that if Romney wins it’s due to racism? Man, we are so screwed as a nation.
You forgot to finish your sentence. “We are so screwed as a nation… if Romney wins.”
Claims of racism and bias are the moral equivalent of claims that Obama is not a citizen – the first refuge of ideologues.
Tell that to Chris Mathews
But there’s actually PROOF that racism and bias exist against Obama.
Exhibit A: Any internet comment field that mentions Obama, including this one.
However, there’s NO proof that Obama isn’t a U.S. citizen.
PS: The whole notion that Obama couldn’t possibly be American is racist in itself, just so you know.
Obama did well. We’ll ignore the rest of your post.
You wish
No I dont think that Mitt Romney have to much to go on, because I just believe that P resident Barack Obama is going to be good at any thing he does, I just believe that God has his had on , I pray that just keep him cover in his blood. For I believe in him and see what he is going to do.Keep the faith in Jesus for he is the way he wil not let you fell, for I have always said that Jesus scend BaPresident Barack Obama to us,and his word shall not fall, this I do believe with all my heart. So hold on to God hand,he will hold your hand until the end, thjis I do know, not just words, but faith will keep you strong, faith will not leave you if you just believe in jesus, he is there all the time we dont have to look for him, for he is right there right beside you trust in him,he will not fail you God is able and he wont fail you, he will be there until the end when the road lood rought to you but not to God, just remember that he is the only one always, keep the faith in him, trust in him, I do and going to keep on trusting him as long as I live, For he is the way the truth and thur light always.
Just keep telling yourself that all the way to the mat after getting KO’d.
Obama is going to get clobbered. The only thing saving him from a Mondale beating is that the Benghazi fiasco occurred when it did and not months ago.
Hail to the Chief…Don’t let the door hit your behind on the way out.
US Marines still use bayonets. Obama didn’t know that FACT
Obama said that we use LESS bayonets, he didn’t say that we no longer use them at all.
Just like we have less ships today than we did during World War 1… why do we need that many ships when we’re not fighting the entire world?
The smartest guy in the room should have known it’s “fewer” and not “less.”
Was thinking the same thing.
If that was your only gripe, then I think Obama’s in pretty good shape.
Excuse me………Obama said that we no longer use bayonets, and calvery horses. If only people would listen to what he actually says. Oh and by the way, attacking Romney is a really great way of getting out of answering questions.
Obama said we use FEWER horses and bayonets than in 1917, not that we DON’T use horses and bayonets. And he is correct.
Funnily enough there are way more bayonets in use now than there were in 1916. Tens of thousands more in fact. Horses were key to strategy in Afghanistan too.
Coming from the commander in chief who talks of “corpse-men” in the military, I don’t expect much.
and the mormons used bayonets when they massacred white settlers in the 1800s. so there’s that.
Great point. Caffein, smoking, alcohol a no no. Killing Native Americans, ok.
Oh burn!
You dont know anything about mormons do you? Its the opposite
Yes, but they use LESS bayonets than they did decades ago. Which would make the President’s claim accurate. Context, my friend.
Obama said the military has FEWER horses and bayonets. When listening to a debate like this, you need to make sure you hear what is actually said, not what you want them to say. Otherwise, there’s no point in actually watching the debate because your mind is made up.
Clearly you didn’t HEAR the FACT correclty. Moron. He said used less Bayonets…
That simply isn’t what he said. He said that we have fewer of them and horses, just as he said ships matter less than they did in the early 20th Century. The point is that we have a more modern approach to warfare, and the Pentagon isn’t asking for more ships.
Damn it Albert…..I was drinking a brew when I read your tweet and now have beer sprayed all over the table and TV…..
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA……
Absolutely he owes you a royalty….
I’m gonna pencil in a double feature for this weekend of BROADCAST NEWS and LOST IN AMERICA!!! Timeless classics. You will always be one of the funniest talents in cinema history!!
Finke for President.
Romney looked like a 7th grader in front of class trying to state all the things he memorized…and then didn’t know where Syria and Iran where on the map. Very Palin-esque!
History Class Discussion years from now:
Student: Why did citizens treat the election like a two party system when we have multiple parties?
Teacher: Well at the time it was the beginning of the Digital Revolution so there were so many distractions for citizens in the U.S. and another major factor was that the media outlets only focused on the two major candidate groups; the Republicans and the Democrats.
Student: I still just don’t see how the society didn’t see how president Obama created loopholes to give himself totalitarian power. Being able to detain someone indefinitely without trial goes against the rights of American beliefs, I hate to believe that citizens were that naïve.
Teacher: The problem is that no generation wants to believe that they are being deceived but the facts were all out there, people just either were not motivated enough to seek the truth or did not fully grasp that the constitution was slowly being stripped of its power. Nobody wants to believe that the government isn’t doing their job because that means that we have failed as a society to elect a good leader.
Student: So even though the two major candidates mostly pointed fingers, avoided talking about important issues, and did little to show that they cared about the constitutional rights people still continued to vote for them over the other less known but more qualified candidates?
Teacher: Yes, I guess you could say that. It was incredible to see that people were willing to vote for two candidates who were deceptive, hypocritical, and ignored the voices of the citizens. I hope this has taught you a lesson that there are more than two candidates and even if they are not in the Democratic or Republican Party, they may still be more qualified to be elected the president. Listen to the debates and base your decision on the candidate who you believe in. Do not just vote because of the president’s ethnicity or gender; that will make a mark in a history book but it may not be who is best qualified to take care of our people and this country.
Romney took the high road, talking about a vision for the future. Obama looked peeved, and spent much of his time launching carefully prepared, but ultimately vacuous punch-lines, like his “bayonet” zinger.
After 4 years of dismal performance, we want more from Obama than appearances on Letterman, jokes, and zingers. We want a plan.
It seems Obama had no plan that he was willing to talk about. By appearing Presidential, Romney held his own, as we now know from Obama’s continued slide in the polls.
This question need not be asked. I think we all watched Romney get murdered publicly. That was awful.
Obama dominated. Romney clearly doesn’t know much about foreign policy.
It’s not an Obama victory until Fox blames the moderator.
When either side blames the moderator, you know who won.
Democrats are actually blaming the moderator a bit.
It’s a close call, but I think it leads towards Romney.
And you are pretty much alone on that one.
Not true. There are many of us who think Romney was the real deal on all three debates. Obama is arrogant, rude, and disrespectful. He made claims that were simply not true and did not pass the facts check. He twisted the truths and told things that were only partly true. Unfortunately, main stream media seldom give the entire story either.
Romney will show to be the really clear popular choice even if the electoral votes show differently.
Romney flatlined in his closing remarks…indicative of his performance throughout. Obama won this one hands down. No argument.
Tumult. Willard used his new word at least four times tonight.
Another draw. Won’t swing the polls in Obama’s favor as the economy is what people will think about when they walk into the voting booth on 11/6. Romney will be the next President. Independent here!
Women won’t vote for Mitt.
Smart woman will!
So smart women want the government to say what they can or can’t do with their bodies? Smart women want funding for planned parenthood taken away?
Smart women you mean
No, she meant “woman”… as in the singular.
Smart women will, you mean.
I wouldn’t call them “smart” as a generalization, though I’m sure plenty of them are. I would call their decision regrettable, but understandable. They miss the clear problems with Romney’s proposals and ignore the potentially disastrous impact on lower income Americans. They are so wrapped up in rejecting Obama that they aren’t willing to realize that our recovery wouldn’t have been any better under a different president – it’s just the way a series of events (Eurozone collapse, slowing China, financial collapse, real estate collapse) have played out. That doesn’t get fixed in 4 years.
Exactly. The economy takes 10 to 20 years to really bounce back. The economy did not come roaring back after the Great Depression until the 50′s. the only reason that this does not look like the Great Depression (no bread lines) is due to the economic fail safe measures put in place as a result of the Depression.
Women won’t vote for Mitt? Really? Try that again. I know of two that did already, and neither are related.
Then they’re morons.
You meant Mormons, right?
Are these two women in binders?
You win Best Comment of this entire comment thread.
Well you know 2 women who voted for Romnesia. It’s a landslide of women for Romney!
A woman voting for Romney is like a turkey voting for Thanksgiving.
So funny:))
At this point in time, Romney’s support by women is tied with Obama’s. Today’s women are much more interested in economy and equity in the marketplace than killing babies and having free birth control.
Mitt Romney seemed tentative, almost afraid at times. Obama won, hands down, and I suspect we are going to see a little bounce from this.
Romney did virtually nothing to differentiate himself from Obama, since he agreed with so much that the President did, why does he deserve our vote?
Vote, Bob Schieffer best host!
President Obama won hands up, that’s all that needs to be said. 4 MORE YEARS ….K
I though Obama won but I’m a Democrat so I’m biased.
Yes it was a great debate but the race is tied at 47% each. The 6% who are still undecided are going to go crazy trying to decide. They might just toss a coin before the vote these are low information voters and after three debates they are most likely overwhelmed with new information. They still won’t be able to make up their minds which means this will be an incredibly close election. 51 to 49 will be the final percentage and whoever wins won’t win more than 280 electoral votes.
There is an actual possibility of a tied electoral count 269 each and it will go the House of Representatives in January and Romney will be eleted. However the Senate votes for vice president which means Obama could actually be demoted to VP which would be hilarious. They would have to form a coalition government and that would be good. I hope this happens it would be historic and we’d finally be able to get rid of the damn electoral college with a constitutional amendment to abolish it.
There are very few undecideds out there who will actually show up at the polls.
Anyone undecided at this point is either a liar or an idiot.
Yep. It doesn’t work the way everybody seems to think, where you’re either Definitely Obama, Definitely Romney, or Undecided. Some people who think they’re voting for Romney right now will end up voting for Obama and vice-versa. And the “Undecideds” have as many opinions as the Definites do. I saw a portion of a talk with eight undecided voters on CNN — these people are not undecided, they’re just saying they are. Some were clearly for Obama, some were clearly for Romney, etc.
Im sure Acorn will find a few undecided homeless homies to vote Obama for a beer and buck. I agree the smart ones with actual skin in the game will vote Romney.
Romney looked much more presidential and seemed to have a much better grasp if the issues. I’m soo disappointed in Obama – he’s (still) asleep at the wheel.
Were you watching TONIGHT’S debate or DVR’ing the 1st one?
The President said Romney wanted to take us back to the foreign policy of the 80s (Reagan won the Cold War and the Armed Forced regain its morale with ops in Grenada, Libya), The social policies of the 50s (when there was a much lower illegimacy rate, family life was strong, and both parties promoted family values, not just the GOP) and finally the economically booming 1920s (of course he tried to correlate the 20s with the depression but there wasnt a Republican president through much of the 30s so Obama did what he does best – he misled.) Romney won this debate because Obama looked unpresidential quoting lines from 1990 SNL clips and explaining to Romney what an aircraft carrier was. Of liberals loved this openly mocking someone who disagrees with them but undecided voters, the ones that count, give this to Romney. Obama said sequestration “will not happen.” First White House release following the debate: sequestration “should not happen.”
If you think Romney had a better grasp of the issues, you don’t have a grasp of the issues
And you probably think the St. Louis Cardinals are going to the 2012 World Series. At least try to get a clue. I know it might be hard for you to engage your brain, but give it shot.
Romney certainly showed up and proved he wasn’t another iteration of George Bush. He tripped up a few times, but it wasn’t disastrous by any means. But Obama came out guns blazing and proudly defended a solid foreign policy record during a tumultuous time.
Paul Ryan is that you?
Marines still use bayonets.
Duh, but there are fewer of them, as our President said.
Nope, there are tens of thousands more bayonets in use now. They are standard issue for Marines, of which there are about 200,000.
And it’s ‘fewer’, not ‘less’.
Obama said we use LESS horses and bayonets….
Oh then by all means we should all vote for Romney, based on your point above. What kind of irrelevant comment is this? Great line by Obama. No need to defend it to your silliness.
Thank you Mr. President my beloved Commander In Chief. Four more – fantastic!!!
Obama debate strategy: Repeat the same vacuous platitudes that he always does. Where are the specifics for his plans for a second term if, god forbid, he gets reelected.
Gimme a break
Romney had no facts or plans, and used the Obama the apologist lie again
like the specifics when Mitt trots out his standard line – ‘i know how to create good jobs, i’ve done it before, that’s what i’m going to do’…..and STILL can’t offer up any Math that works or specific ideas.
Romney debate strategy: agree with the President’s foreign policy then lie about everything else.
Yes, the party that brought us George Bush would be a significantly better alternative.
So yeah, let’s forget the GOP’s current attitude towards compromise, their illogical pledge to Grover Norquist despite a promise for fiscal responsibility, and social values from the Victorian era. I have nothing against conservatives – but the Tea Party is hurting the credibility of an otherwise reasonable side of the conversation, and they are on Romney’s back.
Obama released a paper detailing his second term plans, so quit whining, Con.
Meanwhile I’m still asking where Mitt’s tax returns are.
Not only did Romney endorse the answers given by Obama but he repeated the conservative fear talk that we always hear from Republicans. Life is not black and white, bad vs. good, but Romney sees it that way and wants to remain protected from the 47%
Bob Scheiffer won. Obama did better than Romney, using his advantage as commander in chief. We the people are the last to know what really goes on behind the scenes and probably that’s okay because of the necessary covert nature of foreign affairs. So the prez has the edge but really can’t use it because he knows more than he can let on. This debate was rhetorical rather than substantive, almost by necessity. Polls won’t shift it’s now time to revise the electoral college because this election is basically a tie on popular vote and will be decided by a couple of states. That’s not right.
Obama destroyed Romney.
R sounded like a 5th grader who studied super hard for a big exam, memorized all his answers, but had no clue what he was actually saying.
give me an example of when governor romney did not answer the question thx
Well about 15 minutes after saying that we need to be prepared for the future, Romney decided not to answer Bob’s hypothetical question. Your Welcome!
Yeah, how about the hypothetical question about Israel? He straight up said he’s not going to answer that because it wouldn’t happen. Um, it’s called a hypothetical.
I love how Romney agreed with the majority of what Obama said. Obama won hands down .
Nope, you missed the point. Romney played the President like a fiddle.
Really? Seriously? I mean, really?
Liberals will never learn that being snarky does not play anywhere but NY/LA. Another loss for Obama. Say hello to President Romney.
HAHAHAHA. i love how ‘snarky’ is actually calling someone out on facts and previous remarks.
Conservatives will never learn that saying things out loud don’t make them true.
And conservatives will never learn that being a dumb, loud-mouthed blowhard only plays well in the south.
Mitt Romney’s a shapeshifter with no core. Americans deserve better. Obama won because he believes what he says. Period.
The crazy homeless guy wandering around the Montage believes what he says too…you need to be able to follow through as well. It’s not that Romney is even that much better, it’s that Obama’s record of the last 4 years is simply failure.
Romney was Presidential. Obama distracted from his pathetic record.
Factcheck its ironic thats ur handle cause u obvioulsy dont kno t facts. the economy is picking up dont read the news? Unemployment is down 7.8 and expected to keep coming down. Gdp is up. Consumer spending is up. Housing is way up. He averted a depression w/o t help of congress. He is superman without a cape.
Educate yourself before perpetuating equally laughable and frightening fallacies. It says everything that 7.8% unemployment is somehow considered a success now, doesn’t it? And honest Democrats will admit that the TRUE unemployment rate is nowhere NEAR 7.8. A Huffpo world is an angry and tragically misinformed world to be living in http://www.forbes.com/sites/briandomitrovic/2012/10/09/when-it-comes-to-job-creation-obama-doesnt-hold-a-candle-to-reagan/
Hard to know where to start. Unemployment is 7.8% because so many discouraged workers left the labour force. The labour force participation rate is at a generational low. GDP is down, consumer confidence is down, housing starts are cratering, the economy is growing at 1.3% at best. There need to be over 150,000 new jobs a week just to keep up with population growth and they’re at less than 2/3 that. New jobless numbers are still up around 380,000 a week. The length of unemployment averages 49 weeks now, a generational high.
Mitt will overturn Roe vs. Wade… He can’t get domestic policy right what made you think he could get oversees….
You seem to be implying that if Mitt Romney were to overturn Roe vs. Wade that it would be some sort of accident. If it were to happen (which would imply that the cosmos shifted somehow and he because president) then there would be nothing of the “accident” about it.
The president of the United States can’t “overturn Roe vs Wade”. It scares me how stupid people are in this country. If you’re ignorant enough to believe Brian’s statement, please stay home on election day and don’t embarrass yourself.
