Not only was last night a big night for President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger
Mitt Romney, it was a huge night for Twitter – and Big Bird. According to Twitter’s blog, a record 10 million tweets were posted, making the first of the 2012 presidential debates the most-tweeted about event ever in U.S. politics. Some moments that sparked lively discussion were moderator Jim Lehrer quipping “Let’s not” when Romney requested a topic, Obama, saying “I had 5 seconds” when Lehrer reminds him of the time limit and the discussion about Medicare and vouchers. But the big Twitter winner was Big Bird who generated more than a quarter million tweets after Romney’s statement that he wants to cut federal funding for PBS, home of the Muppet characters, despite his fondness for the tall yellow bird. A chart tracking the night’s Tweets is below.

Big Bird has always been a star – a very, very well paid star. This is EXACTLY why the US taxpayer needs to stop funding PBS.
If PBS needs to find the 15% of its financing that the government provides somewhere else, I would suggest that they start with renegotiating its licensing fees with the toy manufacturers – the people who make BILLIONS off of PBS programming merchandise sales.
Yes, let’s cut funding for public broadcasting so we can give more money to the military than they even requested in their operating budget.
Where are you getting the 15% number from? Because it’s simply not true. Even the most Republican of sources estimate PBS only receives 5% from a combination of federal, state, and local gov’t funding. Federal isn’t even the majority. I’ve never read any source claiming more than 1% of their funding comes from the federal gov’t.

Cutting PBS support (0.012% of budget) to help balance the Federal budget is like deleting text files to make room on your 500Gig hard drive
if a few text files include the 906-page “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” followed by the 55-page “Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 then deleting text files could be a significant amount of space on a 500GB HD.
It dosen’t matter what percentage is being used for PBS. Taxpayers should not be funding it. Use the licensing fees and donations.
