ABC is closing its Private Practice. The medical drama will end its run this season when it completes the 13-episode order it received in May as ABC has opted not to give it a back 9 pickup. Meanwhile, ABC has given additional episode orders to the series that spawned Private Practice, veteran Grey’s Anatomy (two episodes for a 24-episode order), as well as established comedies Modern Family and The Middle (two episodes each) and mystery dramedy Castle (one episode).
I hear ABC brass and Grey’s and Private Practice creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently came to the conclusion that the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff had run its course, and it was time for it to end after five-and-a-half seasons. The final cancellation decision was made this afternoon, and Rhimes just broke the news to the Private Practice cast and crew. (Read Rhimes’ Twitter note to fans below) The decision would enable the series to end by wrapping the storyline of its central character Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). Private Practice was facing the pending departure of Walsh, who is leaving after Episode 13, which will now be Private Practice’s series finale. Private Practice, which started off as a two-hour planted spinoff episode of Grey’s Anatomy, was built around Walsh’s character on Grey’s. Tim Daly, Private Practice‘s original male lead, left at the end of last season when his option was not picked up.
Private Practice had an OK launch on Wednesday and really flourished when it was moved behind Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday midway through its second season. Last spring, it was relocated to Tuesday 10 PM to make room for Rhimes’ newest drama, Scandal, which looks good for a back order. Private Practice has been a soft Live+Same Day ratings performer in its new Tuesday slot but has been a big Live+7 gainer, with its recent sixth-season premiere jumping 63% to a 3.1 rating in adults 18-49.
I’m sad to say that Private Practice’s run will end after episode 613 this season. There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line. Creatively, we are all extremely proud of the show and especially proud of this season — which you will all soon discover is a creative renaissance. I can’t wait for you to see it.
It’s heartbreaking to end. Truly. I feel so lucky to write for these characters and tell these stories and I truly feel this show has taught me so much as a writer. And there’s a family here, of crew and cast, people who have bonded over these past five and a half seasons. It’s rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we’re grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It’s meant the world.
Thank you.

It was a good run but its time. I gave up Greys years ago but still stuck with this show, always holding my attention but it wouldn’t work without Walsh.
I agree this show would not work without Kate Walsh; I think the producers should have given her more control over this show [MUCH more] from the beginning-I expect she is leaving because this did not happen. HOWEVER, this show is much better than Grey’s Anatomy ever was-certainly better than Grey’s Anatomy has been in years.
If Disney was actually willing to support the existence of a multi-racial couple on one of their networks….if Audra MacDonald had been afforded the salary to which she was owed, hence had not left….
If any of the above had occurred, Private Practice would have been fantastic.
What I really mean is, if Shonda Rimes had the gumption to back up her gall re: what she chooses to write about, we would all have three working shows from her right now, not one faltering one.
My thoughts exactly! Private is a better show than Greys and Scandal, which has a ridiculous storylone. im sorry the networks chose to let Kate Walsh walk away rather than keep such a great cast together.
I’m thrilled to see that I’m not the only one that thinks Scandal is a bust; the storyline, at best, is ridiculous. I’m really going to miss Private Practice. I’ve really come to love all the characters and I don’t know about all of you but I was floored when they closed all their stories, I had no idea that cancelation was even on the table.
I agree with this too. Scandle has never caught my attention, however, I have stuck with Grey’s and Private Practice all the way. I catch them on the ABC site now because of my work schedule, but I love these shows. I just watched the last episode and was wondering what happened to end it the way they did. I didn’t know it was cancelled. So sad to see it go. I dislike it when characters leave these shows, but what can you do. I am sorry to see Private Practice end, and I hope Grey’s stays on. Time will tell. Congratulations to all the actors, writers and all involved with production. You have all done a wonderful job. Thank you.
I disagree about the show NOT working without Walsh. The show was losing steam over the last couple of seasons. However, the most recent episodes featuring Sheldon and Charlette were great. I hope they take their talent to other TV programs. kathleen, brookfield, WI
She’s one character. I watch for the entire cast. Replace her with someone new. The public would get over the loss. and shame on you Shonda Rhimes for your lack of vision and cutting this short. It wasn’t a full run and more people agree with me than falling into line with the rest of the idiot sheep that this drama had many more seasons to go and keep us interested. Perhaps Shonda is the one who has lost her vision and ability to handle more than one show at a time, Find someone to take her place, we aren’t buying a lack of story line or it’s run it’s course. People can and are replaced all the time, the 2 of them are no different.
I as not going to be watching the show after K. Walsh left. So I am glad it is finished. I also got tired of seeing her character-cheaply bedding down with every male lead on the show. Glad it is over. As for Greys hope S fixes the show it seems to be going nowhere and am about ready to close the door on this one as well.
I agree with you 100% Replace her and let the show GO ON! If you can’t write for Private Practice on it’s own then incorporate it with Grey’s A. The reviews said the reviews were better when it followed Greys. That way everyone would be happy.
I’m devastated to learn Private Practice has been cancelled. After just watching my taped version from a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering if it was the last episode because of the way it ended. After ‘Googling’ it I’ve learned the cold hard truth. Geez, I love this show! Charlotte & Coop were my favorites. Please bring the show back…even if you do have to make some replacements.
WOW.. I mean..WOW..please incoporate into Greys!! TOO GOOD of a show!!
I am so sad that Private Practice was cancelled. I am very surprised as I always loved this show from the first episode to the last. I love all of the characters and the actors who portrayed them. I thought the writing was great and I will really miss this show. If there is a way to keep it going, I hope they can. If not, I wish the best for all of the actors and I hope to see them on another show soon. By the way, if it did have to end,I did enjoy the way, Shonda wrapped up all of their lives so they were all happy (in their own way).

If this season is a creative ren. they why is it being cancelled? However i will say that i enjoyed it but the last 2 years it became too soap opera-ish.The real reason is she still has Grey’s and a new love which is Scandal and can’t stretch herself too thin. This always used to happen when a creative team has ahit show and spawns new shows which takes away the energy and creativity.Thank goodness Grey’s is still very strong and constantly re-invents intself by moving characters out and bringing new ones in.
I’m surprised this show lasted as long as it did and thank goodness this show is finally getting the hook once and for all.
I agree and it’s time for Grey’s to go as well although I would like to see some of the actors on other TV shows or one of their own.
Six seasons longer than it should have been on.
amen.
How would you know unless you’ve been watching. And why have you been watching a show for which you didn’t care for six years?
this show has sucked since the beginning. A great cast with horrible writing from the get go…bye-bye!
What Pedro said. Great cast but this show was painfully bad. And Grey’s is so horrifyingly bad now it needs to go too.
Your ignorance is appalling. This show has been amazing and Grey’s is even more amazing. Thank God your comments don’t affect the decision of show cancellations because TV wouldn’t be the same without Grey’s and Private Practice. I surely will miss Private Practice. Not only do I love these shows but I share these shows with my man and we enjoy them together as a bonding experience and as a way to enjoy quality storytelling which is hard to find on TV these days. We are grateful for Shonda Rhimes creating this show.
I wholeheartedly agree that Private Practice has been very good – especially during the last two seasons. I thought the show was very creative about its story lines and I hate to see it end.
Grey’s Anatomy, on the other hand, has lost a lot of its appeal with me. I did enjoy it at first, but for me it has about run its course.
Thank you for your response…..Private Practice has very well written and thought out…..the shows are deep, asking and sometimes answering questions about some of the most difficult situations in life. People that do not appreciate this show may lack the depth it takes to understand, absorb and benefit from it’s ability to bring heartfelt emotion and awe for those stories that it brings to light. Shonda Rhimes writes very sensitive interactions between the characters……friendships evolve and a family of professionals that support each other thru thick and thin……..we should all be so lucky to have a circle of friends that are portrayed on this amazing show….I have so enjoyed it’s journey…..thank you ABC and Ms. Rhimes for the ride!!! Sad to see it go……….
I agree…these are theonly two prime time shows that I tivo each week. I love the writing…I’ve been very emotional at times. Sad to see it all end
What an awful, unimaginative waste of time and money. How did it ever get on the air, let alone last this long. Shonda should light a candle to ABC. Without that network’s commitment to insipid melodramas and pandering to a female audience, she’d be broke right now.
hope Grey’s is next that show is horrible!
I am glad that ABC didn’t wait until May 2013 tell the fan the bad news. I just hope that Grey will learn to created better subplot. Both show went away from it original story and created story that the fan loses interested. I can’t wait to see how Scandal’s future subplot will help the series.
ABC is having problems with their Tuesday 10pm and Thursday 10pm slots now. In fact, Rhimes’ other show Scandal would have been cancelled if not for its consistency among its 18-49, which is frankly, very low.
I guess I’m the ‘odd duck’ because I really loved the show, loved the characters, storylines and mostly the actors! It was a mature show able to deal with family issues as well as those of a more personal nature of the characers! Clearly there were more fans than nay sayers for the show to have lasted 6 seasons and given ABC’s lousy track record of abandoning projects before they can even catch their breath, 6 seasons is a milestone!!
This is, after all, the instant gratification generation, including the exects in the TV industry! If something is not a hit immediately, it’s gone! The idea of giving a show time to find its audience doesn’t seem to exist any more; you throw the baby in the pool and if it swims, fine, if not…well! I wish all involved the best of luck in their future endeavors!
T
I liked it as well. One of my favorites currently airing.
I loved Private Practice!! A lot of these actors have been around a good while since they are recognizable from previous shows they have done. I think it could have continued for a bit longer but it’s obvious that that is not going to happen. I will miss the show and all of them!! You guys are great in my book. Hope to see you again soon! Good luck.
I loved this show! The actors are superb. The actress who plays Charlote should have won an emmy for the episodes in which she was raped. The scene where she was leaving the hospital was riveting. Last season when the baby born without a brain was dying in his mothers arems had me in tears for days. I am sick and tired of network TV. Every year or so I invest my time and get involved with these shows. Then the networks think they need something different. But you are getting rid of good shows! I am sick of moronic sitcoms and reality shows. I hope that cable picks this show up. TNT would be good. I am wacthing more and more of cable.
I agree with you. ABC has a bad habit of putting a show on the air and when you get invested in it they cancel it and put some stupid reality show or worse yet a cooking show. If I want to watch someone cook I will watch the food network. I have also started watching TNT they have a bunch of great shows on.
I,too, will miss Private Practice. The acting has been superb. I don’t watch a lot of TV but have looked forward to this show.
Well said Alex, in my opinion anyways. I really liked the show and will miss it. :’(
I will miss Private Practice… i love the characters and have enjoyed them over the years. I almost gave up on Grey’s after the airplane crash… I thought that was ridiculous, but i got back into it. I don’t like how easily they just kill off characters on these shows – and the creative touches to private practice this year, had me watching the clock for when it would be over. I too look forward to seeing these actors in other venues.
I totally agree.. I will really miss this show… I loved these characters… and thought it was a good last show… (assuming that was the last show)…
Another show bites the dust because its creator got busy with too many other things. PP showed great potential while Rhimes actually paid attention to it and before she got called away again. It should be interesting to see if SCANDAL was actually worth the sacrifice in the long run. 7 Episodes isn’t a season by US-standards.
Quality already suffers from the current “let’s throw a bunch of shows against the wall and let’s see what sticks” mentality and the idea that one project isn’t enough anymore.
Wow, such kind and supportive comments for a hard-working, really-talented team of people who are all now out of work. And no, I don’t work on the show.
It’s about time they started canceling Shonda’s awful shows. Next to go is Scandal and after that… Grey’s. Two years from now we’ll be free from all her horrible characters and writing. Her legacy on ABC will be finally over.
This show was for adults. It was the thinking mans soap. I will miss it. They got stupid with cooper and char but it was still attention worthy. They coukd have added cheaper actors to it
Ignore the bitter haters.
LOL! That is what I was just thinking, brentbent. And that people need to proofread or stop posting from their iPhone.
I agree. I loved the characters. I started loving Grey’s Anatomy and fell in love with Private Practice. This year so far has been great. Astonishingly better then Grey’s.
I agree with u solely. I enjoyed the show & sad 2 it end. I believ the time slot didn’t help any
Lotsa haters here. First off, the ‘Grey’s Sucks’ refrain every time there’s news about it, or any show related to it, or Shonda Rhimes, is old. It’s a nighttime soap people, not War and Peace. Lower your bar.
After 9 seasons any show that’s decent evolves. I don’t want to watch the same show from 2005. Private Practice is also a soap, and for a soap, it did its thing. Both shows were exceedingly well cast- alone worth tuning in for. Could just look at Kate Walsh and the various McDreamys all day. And no I do not work for, or with any of these people.
What really seems to be killing these shows, and many network dramas, is the growing commercial load which is now just nuts. Very tough to sustain anything creatively when you’re breaking in every 6 minutes. I think on Grey’s it’s now almost 50/50 in terms of story to ad ratio. This is absurd. Cable flourishes partly for this reason.
Grey’s epsiodes run 42 to 43 minutes. 9 minutes of commercials in a half hour. Check out any half hour on broadcast TV, and you will see after commercials, that most content is 22 minutes-8 minutes commercials. This has been the norm for years.
8 minutes per half hour is the norm. Can’t add or subtract, sorry.
I realize the 18 min standard – don’t know why it just feels like so much more than it used to. Perhaps the way it is now broken up. These hours used to air mostly in quadrants. Now they’re way chopped up and since cable dramas are so much more accessible, the contrast seems to make it all the worse.
They cancel all the good shows, but leave all the reality tv that really sucks on. Soon there will be nothing to watch
For a “spin off” show I thought this show was really good, I do agree as sad as it is that it has had its run. I wish the best for the actors on the show because they all did very well with their story lines.
I have been a fan of this show since it first aired! I was upset when it was moved from it’s 10pm Thursday slot to it’s current Tuesday time opposite Parenthood (another favorite), which I recorded to watch later. I’m very sorry to see it go, as it’s one of my favorites!
Lots of ‘haters’ adding their two-cents. I, for one, love PP and Grey’s! In fact, due to my busy schedule, I have had to limit my TV time and these two shows are the ONLY shows I follow each week. I will be extremely sad to see PP end, as well as Grey’s (when that time comes). I think Shondra Rhimes has served both shows well and is an amazing writer with proven talent. I have never followed any series for as long as I have followed Grey’s, and I can’t say that either show has had any episodes that have completely disappointed me…And yes, I have watched each and every episode of every season. I do agree that PP must come to an end with Kate Walsh leaving, but I am definitely sad to see it end.
I really enjoy both of these shows and wish they would keep them going. Grey’s had better not get cancelled! I have watched both from the premiere and I think while some episode’s weren’t as good, as a whole, they have been great. I love Kate Walsh and hope her and the rest of the cast go on to other shows. I would definitely watch! For some of the comments posted, if you can’t say anything nice….! They couldn’t have been that bad if they have been going for 5+ years
Love PP. Can’t believe it’s being cancelled. I record it (and Grey’s), put the kids to bed and have a mommy night watching them. So I can cry/laugh without being interrupted. I love both shows, and love the characters. It’ll be sad to say goodbye
I loved Greys Anatomy. It was my favorite show. Then came the spinoff. Private Practice. I started to watch that and then I totally fell in love with the show. So I was in love with both shows. I watched and enjoyed week after week. But then when George died, I was crushed but able to keep watching but then Izzy left and things were going crazy I started to lose my interest. Anyway. I completely love Privite Practice. So I have all the seasons of that show also. So right now, I don’t even watch Greys at all. I am so very upset that this is it for Private Practice. I was hoping to see more of their lives. I wanted to see Charlette and Coopers babies and watch Lucas grow up a little more and see Addison raise her son. I could keep going but won’t. So I just want to say that I will miss the show
I agree w/Kelly. I also loved Greys at that time and lost interest around the same time but continued watching private pratice. I am shocked that it is ending. Its such a good show, way better than greys right now. Sad to see it go.
I loved the show too and am sad it is being taken off.
