EXCLUSIVE: Four years after he left TV producing to focus on feature directing, former Imagine TV topper Tony Krantz re-entered TV last summer. In his first year back, he landed a series on the air, NBC’s upcoming Dracula starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and a pilot order at ABC for Scruples. Now Krantz has set up six more series projects at cable and broadcast networks through his independent production company Flame Ventures. All are executive produced by him, with Flame’s Reece Pearson co-executive producing.
At NBC, Flame is finalizing a deal for Cuba, a drama written by Jorge Zamacona (Homicide) and executive produced by CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria and former CNN President Jonathan Klein. The project, which will be produced by Universal TV, tells the story of American and Cuban families at the dawn of post-Castro Cuba with an entire nation up for grabs.
At Showtime, Krantz is in negotiations for Kings Of Midnight, based on the book series by Wallace Stroby who will executive produce. In his first ever series project, Oscar winner Ted Talley (Silence Of The Lambs) will write the adaptation, a dark and atmospheric story of professional criminals led by a female criminal.
At the CW, the company has Wired, which is executive produced by Twitter founder Biz Stone. Written by Sandy Isaac (Drop Dead Diva), it is a fictional story set in the 70s about the birth of the computer industry. The project has not been laid off at a studio yet.
Comedy Performance Anxiety at Fox tells the story of a local comedy theatre group in the middle of the country. Sam Wolfson (play Jewtopia) is writing, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Emily Ziff executive producing through their Cooper’s Town Prods. alongside Krantz for 20th Century Fox TV.
TBS’ untitled Sideline Reporter Project is a comedy about the life and times of a local cable sports network written by Tom Brady (Good Vibes). Executive producing alongside Krantz are sports movie writer-director Ron Shelton, NFL Network’s Rich Eisen and Suzy Shuster, former Fox Sports and HBO Real Sports reporter.
At USA Network, Boom, the story of a modern energy boom in North Dakota, is being written by Josh Pate and Rodes Fishburne. ABC Studios is producing the project, originally developed at ABC last season.
Additionally, Flame continues to have Emperor in development at TNT. Goodfellas alum Ray Liotta is attached to star and produce the project, the story of a modern mob boss, written by feature scribe Jonathan Hensleigh (Armageddon).
