Activist and actor Russell Means died of cancer Monday at his home in Porcupine, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was 72. A prominent member of the American Indian movement, he was instrumental in Marlon Brando having a Native American accept Brando’s Best Actor Oscar at the 1973 Academy Awards as a way of highlighting the plight of American Indians. Means also appeared in several films: He debuted as an actor in Michael Mann’s 1992 film The Last Of The Mohicans with Daniel Day-Lewis, and his big-screen credits include Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers and the voice of the Powhatan in Disney’s 1995 animated Pocahontas as well as the 1998 sequel. Means also appeared on TV in show such as HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and CBS’ Nash Bridges.

his performance as Chingachgook (sp?) in LAST OF THE MOHICANS is legendary. that final battle with wes studio was classic.
A great inspiration to me and many others and a class act on screen and off.
I give you this one thought to keep –
I am with you still – I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the sweet uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft starts that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone –
I am with you still in each new dawn.
Could not agree more – a stunning performance – that final moment on the mountain is the only scene in film that brings tears to my eyes every time.
A great man; a great friend; a great believer in the rights of all men. He walked the walk, and thought the talk was cheap. I will The Oglala Souix will miss him. The Mohican People will miss him. The poor of of Niccaragua will miss him. All who knew him will miss him. I’m proud to have had him as a part of my life. You are the Spirit of the Black Hills — God bless you.
He is the only one for whom I had butterflies in my stomach when I met him and that’s because I so admired the work he has done for his people and for others. I can’t imagine if I’d have had the courage to face the FBI guns as he did at Pine Ridge. I admire all of those who stood up for their people at that time. I was one of those who tried to help by sending food and warm clothing, not knowing that the FBI was stopping anybody who transported those collections at the borders of each state, in an effort to starve AIM out. Meeting someone who has been stabbed and shot while standing up for his people was awesome, like meeting history. RIP, Russell. I’m so sorry you have passed because we all need you still. We are all the poorer for having lost you. At least you won’t be in amy more pain.
Russell Means as Wandering Bear on Curb Your Enthusiasm
Cheryl (Hines): Hi, Wandering Bear.
Wandering Bear: Hello. How is… your vagina?
Cheryl: Its… getting better.
Wandering Bear: Good!
A real authentic person. Loved everything he was in. I’ll have to track down that episode of Curb.
A great Actor, Humanitarian and Activist. Will be missed, yet remembered for his contribution to life.
