EXCLUSIVE: Rachel Zoe is already a fixture on Bravo with her eponymous reality series. Now a fictional version of the hot designer/stylist may join the primetime lineup of broadcast sibling NBC. Zoe and her husband Rodger Berman have sold a single-camera comedy to NBC centered on a fictional version of Zoe. The two are executive producing the project, which will be written by writer/performer Aseem Batra (Animal Practice) and directed by Emmy winner Todd Holland. BermanBraun as well as Holland and Karey Burke’s Dark Toy are producing with Universal TV, where both companies have deals. Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun, Gene Stein, Burke and Holland are executive producing with Zoe, Roger Berman and Batra.
Comedy projects based on the lives of top TV personalities are hot this season. NBC also has a half-hour in the works executive produced by Private Practice star Kate Walsh and writer Chris Case loosely based on the couple’s personal experience. ABC has a comedy based on America’s Next Top Model‘s Tyra Banks, which she is co-creating/executive producing with writer Kenya Barris, as well as another half-hour from Modern Family co-star Ty Burrell and his brother Duncan inspired by their childhood. Additionally, NBC is developing a music dramedy whose plot represents a fictionalized version of songwriter Diane Warren’s career.
After establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s top stylists, Zoe ventured into designing with the launch last year of the Rachel Zoe Collection, which has since been expanding. The Rachel Zoe Project, which chronicles Zoe’s busy life as a top stylist, up-and-coming designer and a mom, is currently in production for its fifth season. Zoe, Roger Berman, Batra, BermanBraun and Dark Toy are repped by WME. Batra, whose series credits also include The Cleveland Show and Scrubs, is managed by Marc Provissiero. This is her first project under the two-year overall deal with Uni TV she inked in June. Dark Toy is behind NBC’s freshman comedy Go On, whose pilot also was directed by Holland.
