It was a rather atypical Wednesday night, with usual demo winner Fox airing a mix of a little bit of baseball, rain delay-filling sitcom reruns and an hour of The X Factor that inadvertently ran simultaneously on both coasts. Or as Simon Cowell put it, “a total f up,” that will result in last night’s two-hour episode airing in its entirety on Tuesday night, pre-empting Fox’s fledgling comedy block and facing an all-new The Voice.

With Fox out of sorts, CBS swooped in and won the night in adults 18-49 (2.7/8), along with total viewers (10.8 million). Survivor: Philippines (2.7/8) and Criminal Minds (3.1/8) were both up a tenth from last week’s fast nationals, while CSI (2.4/7) was down two tenths. CSI‘s ratings fluctuations have been puzzling — it went up last week when it faced the premieres of ABC’s Nashville and NBC’s Chicago Fire and then retreated last night when its time-slot rivals dropped significantly from their debuts. (CSI still ruled the 10 PM hour.)
Nashville (2.0/6) tumbled 29%, while Chicago Fire (1.5/6) shed 21%. Nashville followed the season debut of Suburgatory (2.8/7) vs. an original Modern Family last week, but in similar circumstances (Happy Endings season debut vs. new Modern Family), Nashville‘s predecessor Revenge dropped 18% to a 2.7/7 in Week 2 last fall. Speaking of Suburgatory, the second-season debut of the suburban comedy in its new post-Modern Family slot came in surprisingly below the show’s series premiere last fall at 8:30 PM. It was also lower than the season premieres of Happy Endings (3.2) and Cougar Town (3.4) in the slot the last two falls as well as the preview of The Neighbors in the half-hour earlier this fall. (All three followed higher-rated episodes of Modern Family). The Neighbors (1.9/5) logged the same fast-national demo rating for a third straight week (it got adjusted up to a 2.0 last Wednesday). The Middle (2.5/8) was up a tenth.
The CW’s Arrow (1.3/4 in 18-49, 1.1/4 in 18-34, 3.5 million total viewers) sealed its back-nine pickup with a strong Week 2 showing. It matched its potent premiere numbers in 18-49 and 18-34 and slipped 16% in total viewers, mostly shedding older viewers. After tying NBC’s 8-9 PM comedies in 18-49 last week, Arrow topped them last night. Supernatural (1.0/3) was also steady in 18-49, down a tenth in 18-34 (0.9/3).
NBC’s dual-personality fall ratings performance continues, with very strong Monday-Tuesday and barely there Wednesday and Thursday. All the network’s shows last night trailed the competition; NBC’s highest-rated program was Law & Order: SVU (1.6/4), which was down 11% from last week. Animal Practice (1.0/3) was down 9%, and Guys With Kids (1.4/4) was flat.

Chicago Fire is just not interesting on the page.
They need to find someone to right this ship before it crashes and burns like Dick Wolf’s last three dramas.
Your kidding right> I think think the ONLY thing thatn can hold this Great show is Dick Wolf. Not that He is bad by any means but i think people are sick of hearing his name. Chicago Fire has a perfect mix of Action, Real Life Emergencies, Good looking stars who can act and great stories. This show in the end with cwertainly blow you away
I don’t understand how ARROW is a hit with 3.5 million viewers. Yeah its on the CW but still…CW Isn’t Cable.
Because season-to-October 14 The CW averaged a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and “Arrow” just scored a 1.3 rating. You shouldn’t compare “Arrow” to shows on other networks, you should compare it to other shows on the same network (i.e., network average). Maybe the question is – how can The CW stay in business with a 0.5 average rating?
They should bring back Secret Circle.. all CW shows suck..
Because if Arrow isnt a hit for the CW, none of their shows are. Shows are judged relative to the other shows on the same network. it would make no sense to compare CW shows to, say, ABC because ABC isnt going to give their shows to the CW.
Nobody watches the CW except for teenage girls and boys who can’t get dates. There are only 3.5 million of them in the United States so it’s a huge coup to have the entire population in front of their tv’s on Wed night.
Because 3.5 million for CW is like 35 million for the other networks at this point.
This is how bad the CW is doing.
Sunday night at 11:30 on AMC, Comic Book Men got 996,000 viewers and a 0.6 in the 18-49
Monday night at 9pm, Gossip Girl on the CW got 780,000 viewers and a 0.4 in the demo.
Demo ratings need to be eradicated. Networks should no longer rely on the viewing habits of younger viewers to determine their programming decisions. #downwiththe1849
Can I get an “AMEN!”?
AMEN!!
But then we know that isn’t going to happen. What is even more puzzling is how some shows get cancelled even though they consistently win their time slot in total viewers. I mean I have seen a show that averaged 8.1 million viewers a week and won its time slot in total viewers each and every week by almost double but only averaged a 1.2 to 1.4 Demo rating get cancelled while at the same time a different show at the same time on a competing network only get 3.6 to 4.0 million total viewers and a 1.6 to 1.8 DEMO rating get consistently renewed.
Yes, I have read all about DEMO group ratings and how they work. Advertisers. Advertisers.
Tell the advertisers to stop chasing the younger demo for their branding campaigns, they are the ones who are actually driving this. The networks just do their bidding, since advertisers pay networks’ employees salaries.
The bias that advertisers have towards younger demos is partly rational (makes more sense to lock in brand loyalties when people are younger and have more time on their buying meter, plus I’m pretty sure the perception that younger people are stupid and more susceptible to adveritising is true) and partly irrational (agism). So this situation can only be partly mitigated within an ad supported industry. For full mitigation, switch to a subscription based business model.
The EXACT same issue happened last year with X-Factor where the Judge’s Homes Results Show was pre-empted by the MLB playoffs running over. Fox needs to have a better contingency plan than running it again next Tuesday against its chief competition (The Voice) and keeping New Girl and Mindy Project off the air for 2 weeks in a row. It would make a lot more sense to re-air X-Factor this Sunday like they did last year after this happened.
The numbers on NASHVILLE are a surprise, and a bummer. I hope they can turn it around, great show with excellent performances all around, particularly Charles Esten who’s been doing terrific work for years and deserves to break out finally. But it looks kind if grim.
Arrow is a hit relative to The CW’s ratings overall. If it were on CBS it would be considered a flop but The CW usually attracts smaller audiences in general so for them nab larger than their average AND beat NBC in the demo equals a hit for them.
Arrow is a winner in my book and the type of show the big four is lacking so I’m glad The CW went forward with it and I hope they do the same with the potential Wonder Woman pilot.
Beyond that I’m curious to see what X-Factor’s ratings will be when the live performances/voting begins and if there will be a spike and eventual drop once the trainwreck hosting duo of smarmy Mario Lopez and the fingernails to chalkboard sounding talentless Khloe Khardasian take the stage. I can already read the season summary of how two new judges, two new hosts and millions of more dollars resulted in LOWER ratings than last season. What more does Simon/FOX need to see to understand they have completely screwed this show up with awful selections with judges and worse selections with hosts? Regret is in your future Mr. Cowell.
Different strokes I guess, I find ARROW to be literally laughably terrible, absurd plot, stiff stilted writing and acting, almost to the point of wondering if it’s meant as a comedic send-up to anyone over age 12.
I want NASHVILLE to work – love the premise, love the acting and the music, especially Connie Britton. I hope ABC gives it time to grow.
NASHVILLE may benefit from a timeslot change… maybe in for the slipping 666 PARK AVENUE on Sundays? NASHVILLE is so good.
I think ABC missed the boat with its treatment of COUGAR TOWN. THE NEIGHBORS and SUBURGATORY just don’t seem to have the chops.
NBC looks tired on Wednesdays. Maybe CHICAGO FIRE would do well on Fridays where the expectations are not as high. I miss original scripted programs on Fridays. Thank goodness for CBS! the Eye tries, at least.
ARROW rocks!
I would love to see Nashville on Sundays as well.
I love CHICAGO FIRE and look forward to it each week. It is full of action and heart. It had me a bit teary eyed last night. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL CHICAGO FIRE! The two leads are great together and the stories are really good too. I give it an A- so far.
Here Here NANCY!!! Well written. This show is the show thats been missing on TV for awhile. It should stay for years.
NASHVILLE does feel like it has more cable sensibilities than network, but CHICAGO FIRE is basically DOA. I doubt Dick Wolf’s clout can save it since the plus seven numbers aren’t lifting it. FIRE is such a generic show and very poorly written.
LOVE Suburgatory and having it after Modern Family, followed by Nashville, makes my Wednesday night! ABC better not mess with this. Viewers who love Modern Family need some time to find Suburgatory, if they haven’t already.
CW is horrendous. Everything they do wreaks of cheese. MTV has far better taste as far as having their finger on the pulse.
Literally almost threw up when I read one of young execs self promote y linkd in. I’m sure pedowitz is fine but he should hire some hot young JAPs from NYC who know what’s up.
I am disappointed with these ratings for such a good show as Nashville, so maybe ABC can move this to Sunday nights and replace the 666 show and hopefully can gain some traction in the next few weeks time. I really like this show and it has a lot of potential but that timeslot might be hurting them as a result. Chicago Fire might be just about done after last night’s results and they need to get rid of those awful comedies.
THE ONLY way Chicago Fire is done after yesterday is IF they all quit. Not happening, wont happen and if you think it should….. You will be very dissapointed.
Nashville’s timeslot is ridiculous. It should be in a family friendly slot, like 8 or 9. Not that I really watch anything live these days, but there’s no way I’d stay up to watch it at 10 PM on a weeknight. I hope ABC gives it a chance because it is the channel’s best new show.
I am very surprised by Nashville ratings.
I was so excited for the premier and I was not disappointed. Loved it. It has actually became one of the shows I can’t wait to watch and there has only been two episode.
I hope ABC gives it time to catch on. But being that it is ABC I’m a little afraid. I do believe they have some of the worst PTB. They seem to make a habit of making poor decisions. Just look at the fiasco they have made out of their daytime programming.
It’s a pretty sad commentary on the quality of network TV when we are praising a show like Nashville and calling it the best show of the new season. It’s terrible. Network TV is a wasteland.
Love Chicago fire, especially lady Gaga’s man… Dam!
