ABC’s lineup last night featured two series anxiously awaiting word on a back order: dramas Last Resort and Scandal. One of them got good news. Scandal (2.0/5 in adults 18-49), which had been all but assured a back-nine order, sealed the deal with a ratings uptick of 5% from last week. (It was up across all key demographics, including 18-34, where it spiked 15%). And Scandal did it with its lead-in, Grey’s Anatomy (2.9/8), down 15% from last week to a season low. Airing against Game 2 of the World Series, ABC’s male-skewing Last Resort (1.3/4) tumbled 24% from last week to a series low despite ABC putting extra promotional muscle behind the episode. Baseball was a mitigating factor, and Last Resort is a major DVR gainer but the Live+Same Day delivery was nevertheless disappointing.
CBS’ male-skewing The Big Bang Theory and Person Of Interest did not get dinged by baseball. Big Bang (4.8/14) was up a tenth from its fast national last Thursday, even with the final, to again lead the night. Person Of Interest (3.0/8) was up 7% to match its season high and top Grey’s for the first time this season. The hammock show between the two, veteran Two And A Half Men (3.7/11), slipped 7% from last week’s highly rated Miley Cyrus episode but was still 6% above the episode from two weeks ago, indicating some of the Cyrus ratings gains have stuck. At 10 PM, Elementary (2.2/6) shed another tenth for a new low but still topped the 10 PM hour. In the fast nationals, CBS (3.1/9 in 18-49, 12.8 million viewers) is running as No. 1 in both categories but may be tied or eclipsed by Fox when the finals for the World Series are released later today. In the non-time-zone-adjusted fast nationals, the game drew a 2.9 rating in adults 18-49, down 9% from Wednesday’s Game 1 and down 22% from last year’s Game 2. The World Series has now been down double digits through two games. (Game 1 was down 18% in the fast nationals, adjusted to a 14% decline in the finals.)
NBC’s Thursday fast nationals were likely inflated by an NFL pre-emption in Minneapolis, so don’t expect all of the preliminary gains to stick. Here are the numbers: 30 Rock (1.3/4, up 8% from last week), Up All Night (1.6/5 , up 23%), The Office (2.1/6, up a tenth from the fast national, flat with the final), Parks And Recreation (1.9/5, up 19%) and Rock Center With Brian Williams (1.3/4, up 44%).

Explain how female skewing ABC and Greys took huge drops while CBS fine. The World Series and NFL and ABC gets destroyed 8-10. Is someone gonna say that there’s something really wrong with Nielsen? Why does ABC show just take these weird drops every week out of the blue. Since premiere week ONCE and GREYS drop alarming tenths each week out of nowhere yet CBS and FOX hit shows all consistent. Makes zero sense. Even the most casual observer can see last nights results make zero sense. Some other ratings gurus at other publications have already remarked at how ridiculous it is, that Greys got hit like they did last night. Stupid flawed, unreliable ratings system.
Last Resort skews male and therefore can’t compete with The Big Bang Theory, which started out skewing male, but has expanded into a true four-quadrant hit over the past three years. Even when you *don’t* factor in the obviously male-skewing World Series, Last Resort doesn’t provide enough of a lead-in to Grey’s because it can’t attract women viewers who would stick around for Grey’s. Grey’s target audience is starting out with The Big Bang Theory instead, which means that through pure inertia, they’re sticking around for 2.5 Men, which they likely ignore in favor of doing other tasks until 9pm, when inertia continues to prompt them to leave the channel where it is and watch Person of Interest.
It’s likely that 8pm will remain a problem spot for ABC for at least as long as The Big Bang Theory, but the *least* that ABC should do is put a show that appeals to women in the timeslot. If I were programming ABC, I’d flip Scandal to 8pm, move 666 Park Avenue from Sunday nights to 10pm Thursdays and move Nashville from Wednesday nights, where it’s floundering, to the 10pm Sunday slot after Revenge. Last Resort *might* have a chance as a self-starter in the 10pm Wednesday timeslot because it’s preceded by family sitcoms and Dads might want to stick around for it. (ABC would need to cancel Neighbors, but that almost goes without saying.)
Oh and to add to my above comment, even if UAN goes down to 1.5, I’m supposed to believe a show that couldn’t get out of the 1.3 zone suddenly spikes while LR drops .4. There is a severely effed up Nielsen sample here.
Those are inflated numbers due to football. UAN will likely slip further than just a tenth in the final numbers. This happens all the time with NBC’s Thursday night lineup.
Too bad about Last Resort, which seems to be suffering from not being confident enough in what it really is…
Please, SOMEONE shoot Grey’s Anatomy and put it out of its misery.
ABC has arguably two of the best-reviewed new series – Last Resort and Nashville – that are struggling when they could be doing much better with more compatible lead-ins on other networks. If CBS had Last Resort, it could do well Tuesdays at 10pm after the two military-themed NCIS. And if NBC had Nashville, it could do well Mondays at 10pm after The Voice (though I can’t argue about Revolution’s success in that time slot) or Tuesdays at 9pm. I wonder of those shows were pitched to the other networks first.
Last Resort should have been pitched to FOX, second choice, NBC. The networks need to stop greenlighting each others’ shows. They’ve all got distinct audiences, even at NBC, which is beginning to rebuld its audience.
The vast majority of an new show’s promotion comes from advertising on that network or the new show’s lead-in, either way, its fate depends on whether it appeals to the network’s existing viewers. If it’s really for viewers who have stopped watching that network altogether, it’s sunk. Its audience will never find it. People have better things to do than worry about what new shows to watch.
There’s more emotion in last night’s Last Resort than any TV show not on HBO and virtually all movies out there now.
I hope ABC gives it a chance after baseball has died. That male demo is hard to get outside sports and let’s hope Last Resort gets enough of it to keep going.
Competing with MLB and NFL really puts pressure on LAST RESORT that it wouldn’t feel elsewhere. 10 p.m. on Tuesday comes to mind. Agree it’s a good show and deserves to survive. Only problem is the ‘LOST” type back story which keeps confusing some viewers.
I hope CBS will give person of interest post super bowl slot. If person of interest take post super bowl slot CBS can order spin-off with female lead(hope for keira knightley). After Mr. Reese(hero in suit) or Jack(24) its time to see female hero in dress.
Person of interest will be with the best retention ever after super bowl in history of that slot. No one other tv show(sitcom or drama) on broadcast network is so much male skewed. After football was over(last season) all shows start droping in the spring only PoI start hit its best ratings. Super Bowl will make PoI 4+ in demo hit drama. From there CBS can move PoI in wednesday at 8 as new anchor drama(like NCIS) after it POI spin-off(with female lead) and in 10 CM. Move survivor in sundays with one cycle per year and CBS sill have both old reality shows(TAR) for few more years.
Since when is ‘Big Bang Theory’ a male-skewing show? Every guy I know hates it and every girl I know watches it religiously.
No surprise that baseball took a hit yesterday against football. There are only so many sports fans home watching TV on a Thursday night…
I hate to break it to you, but The Big Bang Theory has been insanely popular in male nerd culture — and other male demos — ever since it started. It’s a 50-50 mix of Kaley Cuoco and comic book references. I don’t know what guys you’re hanging out with, but none of you are typical guys.
Re: LAST RESORT
“The smallest nuclear nation” premise would be worth watching if it was less about action and more about a bunch of meatheads on a submarine trying to figure out how to incorporate themselves as a nation all the while learning on the go about the treacherous waters of international relations.
ABC made a mistake by not launching both Zero Hour and Last Resort to build a larger male demographic.
Have you not noticed the way ABC orders scripts every fall since Paul Lee took over programming? Straight married men with wives & families are an afterthought at ABC. Lee programs, for the most part, to tv that caters to low viewership, especially in the target demo, which is just bizarre. It doesn’t seem to be in his DNA to find programming that involves alpha males, unless it’s something vulgar and repulsive. You want an alpha male who is decent, kind, cleancut, but large and in charge, I suggest you go to CBS programming. NCIS NCIS: LA, Criminal Minds, CSI, etc., etc., etc., they’ve got those boys in spades in addition to great female characters throughtout its lineup. You can’t get that combination at ABC, NBC, or FOX anymore.
With that said, the dropoff from BigBang Theory (4.8) to Two & A Half Men (3.7), to Person Of Interest (3.0), to the even worse Elementary (2.2), is still too large.
Yet the retention of viewers are still very strong. Person Of Interest and Elementary appeal to much older demographics, and have stronger competition.
Yeah Paul Lee only launched Once Upon A Time, Revenge, Suburgatory, Scandal last year
Go, POI!!! I love that show. It’s my favorite CBS show.
Good news for us Scandal fans great show.
