The director of the upcoming National Geographic TV movie about the killing of Osama bin Laden is criticizing the New York Times for suggesting in a story that his Seal Team Six risks causing additional backlash in the Muslim world against President Obama and the U.S. John Stockwell told Politico the NYT‘s suggestion that the movie “contains scenes that might be incendiary to the Muslim world, because of the ‘jeopardy to Muslim children during the assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound’ is “nonsensical.” “We went to great lengths to highlight the care and the control that the SEALs showed during the chaos of the raid — not to harm any women and children”, Stockwell told Politico. (The director even provided clips from the movie to illustrate his his point; see them below.) The NYT piece focused mainly on editing that gave Obama more prominence and deleted a scene in which GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney appeared to oppose the raid. Nat Geo is airing the movie November 4, two days before the election.

It looks like it was shot on a shoestring budget at best. Ugh. Nat Geo, step your game up, stop being so cheap, and stop making movies with production values that would make Lifetime cringe and Roger Corman guffaw.
And is someone seriously saying that Nat Geo shouldn’t make a film, a fact-based one no less, because some people are so backwards they can’t handle it and will riot and kill?
“It looks like it was shot on a shoestring budget at best.”
Really?
As compared to Blackhawk Down, or?
Who cares if there is a backlash. If we’re going to live in a free society we take the good with the bad. If people can’t find a way to express themselves with resorting to extreme violence that’s their problem, and not the the fault of the film.
Where were you clear thinkers when the US gov’t had that guy arrested for posting his youtube video? Or when Obama stood before the UN 9 days later and blamed the riots on the video?
Apparently free society’s reaction to the irrational response of savages depends on which political party stands to benefit from the release of any particular movie. Unless you’re also supporting Nakoula’s video, just shut up.
To answer Roger – yes, we’re supposed to consider the reaction of violent savages to everything we do. If you don’t, you’ll be blamed for the ensuing violence, dragged out of your house in the middle of the night and thrown in jail. That’s what we do now.
That the SEALS did make every effort not to harm women and children, that the film goes to great lengths to show this, will not make one single iota of difference. If the Muslim world didn’t have the US and Israel to backlash against then it would simply backlash against itself, which it does as well. Make your films or, as the Duke of Wellington once said, “Publish and be damned!” Because damn us they will and do, whatever we do.
Can’t wait for the sequel: “Raid on Benghazi”. A pulsating, mind numbing and daring rescue mission to save the US Ambassador to Libya and the brave Navy Seals fighting to the death to protect him from peaceful RPG toting gangs of upset YouTube clip protestors.
Featuring live drone footage and actual phone pleas for help, “Raid on Benghazi” is scheduled for release as soon as the real story is finally told.
the movie is plain awful and is an embarrassment to Nat Geo. As for what someone may think of it politically, who cares? I mean, look at the comment of Gord above, sheer partisan nonsense. And that’s on either side. What matters is quality, and Nat Geo just screwed the pooch on that one.
Roger and Ricky,
Know your facts before you chime in trying to sound so important and critical. Bat Geo did not make or produce the film, they are simply airing it. They have extremely low viewership on their channels so this is a lucky opportunity. The film portrays an important event in history and lets see either of you go make a movie instead of sitting on the sidelines yapping away nine sense.
The director violated his parole by having anything to do with the internet. Granted the videos sensationalism is the only reason they caught him violating his parole but his arrest was completely warranted.
