On the heels of sweeping the Primetime Emmys and scoring series highs with its second-season premiere, Showtime‘s drama Homeland has been given a third-season pickup. The order is for 12 episodes.
Last night, Homeland delivered its most-watched episode yet with 1.75 million viewers at 10 PM, edging its previous series high posted by the Season 2 premiere (1.73 million). Homeland‘s second-season opener September 30 was up 60% from its Season 1 premiere, delivering 2.07 million viewers for the night. The Season 2 premiere week averaged 5.2 million viewers across platforms (including Live+7, DVR and on-demand), up 25% vs. Season 1, a series high and the best performance ever for a sophomore series on Showtime. Four weeks into the season, on-demand has increased views of the Season 2 premiere to a total of 5.7 million viewers. Season 3 will begin production spring 2013. “The Emmy wins for Homeland have certainly set the stage for a great second season,” said Showtime entertainment president David Nevins. “The writers, cast and crew of Homeland continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride, growing audiences week after week.”
Homeland‘s companion, Dexter, has already been renewed for next season, its eighth, as part of a two-year pickup.
Homeland, produced by Fox 21, stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, Morena Baccarin, David Harewood, Diego Klattenhoff, Jackson Pace, Morgan Saylor, Jamey Sheridan, David Marciano and Navid Negahban. The series executive producers are Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, Gideon Raff, Michael Cuesta, Alex Cary, Chip Johannessen, Henry Bromell, Meredith Stiehm, Avi Nir and Ran Telem.

I for one cannot wait for the ultimate showdown as the series comes to a close, when Saul Berenson is finally face-to-face with terorist leader Abu Nazir, then draws his sword and says: “Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
This is quickly becoming one of the best tv series EVER, especially after last nights series-changing episode.
Excellent news about Homeland. I was worried about such a great first season, they might lose a little footing, having to change direction after what happened at the end of last season, but this season might have even started off better.
Love the show. But they’ve got to tone down the “crazy” thing with Claire. It is starting to get on my nerves, especially when her lower lip quivers when she cries.
This show is phenomenal. You can count me as one of those “new viewers” who marathoned the first season following the Emmy sweep and is now obsessed. The power of DVR/On-Demand.
Fantastic show!! Last night’s episode was brilliant. Kinda wonder how long they can keep it going before it plays itself out, but am loving it right now.
Although I’m still watching this show (primarily for the non-Danes scenes), I will NEVER understand America’s blind infatuation with the girlish (and churlish) portrayal of “Agent” (I still can’t believe that Danes plays a federal agent – not to mention that a federal agency would accept Carrie as a recruit) Mathison.
The entire scene in which she “runs into” Brody was so badly written, directed and acted. Seriously, that whole gesture with her arms on her hips when she says “congressman” made me heave so with laughter that I had to pause the DVR. If the idea was to raise Brody’s suspicion over Mathison’s reinstated theory, why would she be so friendly, instead of acting like she’s putting on a facade – that would have been far more effective. But she seems so happy to see him, why would he suspect anything at all?
Danes has all of three personality changes in the show: 1) pouty, on-the-verge-of-tears crying face; 2) wild, bug-eyed chew-the scenery tantrum; and 3) silly, impish, coming-of-age, entitled teenager. THAT’S IT!
Fantastic show. I’m likewise a new watcher (bought the first season on apple TV). Absolutely love it.
You know that going be renew
Start getting better every episode I start watch in middle of season 1 saw rest on rerun in marthton they ran on one of Showtime 3 LOL!
I really don’t mean to be the Lone Dissenter… but this show is ridiculous.
I think I dropped the show once the CIA agent f***ed the man she suspected of being a terrorist. WTF?!
