Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias reboot will debut this Sunday as scheduled after a temporary restraining order sought by a producer on the original movie was thrown out. A Los Angeles judge made the decision after a hearing this morning. White, executive producer on the 1989 feature, earlier this week filed a lawsuit against the remake’s producer, Sony Pictures Television, Lifetime and the network’s parent A+E Television Networks, along with an injunction request to block the TV movie from airing. The suit, in which she is charging breach of contract, good faith and fair dealing, seeking screen credits, fees, and a portion of net profits, is still ongoing. Read the lawsuit here. Lifetime’s remake of the classic feature film stars Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Rashad’s daughter Condola Rashad star. It is executive produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

What is the purpose of remaking this? The original had such an exceptional cast. THis is like a total waste of money!
This cast is awesome! Stop with all of the hate.
I think the cast wanted to make a good movie. It was just a B movie in my opinion. It would be the same as trying to remake Gone with the Wind. Queen Latifah could never replace Sally Field in Steel Magnolias. Just like Sally Field could never replace Quuen Latifah in Bringing Down the House. It just won’t work!!
Gone With The Wind, Steel Magnolias and Bringing Down The House? You really think those movies can be categorized together? Or is Bring Down The House the only movie of Queen Latifah’s that you can reference?
Sad. You should do better.
And for all of you who were “livid at hearing about a remake”, are you equally as livid about being inundated by each remake in Hollywood and the fact that no one seems to have original ideas or are you livid that your beloved “Steel Magnolias” was remade with a black cast?
I’ll bet if Dakota Fanning and Jody Foster were cast as another Steel Magnolias remake, you’d be all over it.
I am such a huge fan of the original and was livid at hearing about a remake. However, after seeing the previews and behind the scenes of this version it appears they are keeping the integrity of the story and just doing a different version. I am looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.
When I looked at that poster, I thought it was Tyler Perry. Until I read “Queen Latifah” (still using that name?), I thought it was him.
That’s the drag queen version of Magnolias. Can’t wait for that one from Logo! Could be a blast!
vincent: that doesnt look like tyler Perry. And what name should Queen Latifah use?
That was a nast comment, if don’t like idea of remake don’t watch
This just in…
Lifetime will also be doing a remake of SHAFT starring Bob Saget.
It’s a play! It’s a play! The “original” Steel Magnolias is based on a play! And plays only get better with re-imagining, new casting, new directors. It’s a living breathing thing. And some of us, shockingly enough, grew up poor and black in a place where we couldn’t just go and catch the local Broadway Across America performances (No matter how badly we wanted to). I would have killed to see this as a high school drama nerd.
I own the original film. I’m having a screening on Sunday where we are watching the original film and then watching the premiere of the Lifetime version. And anyone who wants to come is more than welcomed.
Or, perhaps everyone would prefer if we sat around and watched the stellar depiction of black women that is Basketball Wives and Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Agree, agree, agree T. Perk. It’s a play. And a good one. Have fun at your screening!
I am appalled! The original was a stellar cast and a poignant story with fabulous direction. Why would ANYBODY feel a need to redo a classic. I watched the first 1/2 hour and had to shut it off. The Housewives of New Jersey screaming was more entertaining. I like Queen Latifa and the Cosby wife….but NOT in this movie….it has no flow…no sincerity…and is not believable…..Really have a lot of nerve trying to redo this
movie…..and how did they get the rights to the film? What a waste of time! and it has NOTHING to do with the fact that it is a black cast( as previously stated)….it just can not be done better than the original!!!! Period!!
I agree!!!
Although the original was stellar, this remake was absolutely needed for all of us who like change and like seeing stories from a different perspective. I loved the movie and I am very proud of Queen Latifa and all of the rest of the cast they did a magnificant job of bringing this home to all of us in this day and age. I welcome more to come. As for the plot, many experience trajadies and heartbreaks no matter what family you belong too.
I totally agree, this was a really good remake of the movie. I really enjoyed it. Actually watched it back to back. Awesome!
I understand that there is nothing wrong with re-imagining a project, but I must agree with you. There was no real purpose to this remake. If there was the remotest possibility of expanding the quality of the production I could understand it; but the original cannot be touched. This remake looks like a little girl wearing her mom’s clothes. It just didn’t fit them.
It seems to me upon reading the filing that Victoria White has a case. Wow. Thanks Deadline for posting this!
It is obvious Harling sold rights to White before the play was a hit. More powerful folks got involved and have pushed her out of the picture. It is shocking how Hollywood mistreats people.
I think this is very exciting and I can’t wait to see it. I would really like to see this made into a series.
This remake was announced since Spring 2012. Why did Victoria White wait so long to file suit? She shoulda filed suit back before the movie was filmed, not the weekend of the airdate.
on page 4 of the lawsuit is a lie. Julia was NOMINATED for Best Supp Actress, she DID NOT WIN.
Julia Roberts was “nominated” for an Oscar. But she “won” a Golden Globe. Best Supporting Actress.
Where are all the writers that used to exist. Now adays it seems the only thing they know how to do is take older classics and rewrite them with new people playing in them. Hint to writers: We liked our movies the way they were……..go back to school and learn what a real writer does and do your own thing. This is really a disgrace that you can’t come up with new stuff……besides vampires and superman that is. Honestly.
There is a God. He just doesn’t watch lifetime.
Its funny most people are so upset and calling this a slap in the face, but is that because it is an all black cast. America needs to see black people in movies in roles that showcase their talent, and not just in the background as the maids and butlers
Just like everything else that has been remade…what about Snow White..the Brady Bunch..so many more..Why is there a problem with this..could it be because it’s a black cast..hum?
If you look up Natchitoches Louisiana you’ll find the original was based on a real life family. The only differance from the movie and real life story was it was Truveys daughter not malins.
I am currently in a film class and for our final paper we have to write about a movie that affected us. I have seen both of these movies and each has it’s own flaws and strengths. Upon doing research for this film I came across the writer’s name and did a little research on his life. He actually wrote the play turned film based on his personal experience with his sister. While certain details have been changed the fact is this story came from one family’s heartbreak. Google Robert Harling to learn more.
Way to be a subliminal racist asshole. Tyler Perry because of a black cast??? I’m assuming most of you are mad because it stars an all-black cast versus a white one. If this was starring Jennifer Lawrence and Kristin Stewart, you’d be excited.
i don’t care WHAT color they are they could NEVER measure up to the origional cast in this CLASSIC
I loved it. Just like the original i laughed cried and at the end had a sence that life goes on and live it happy.
I loved the original and this remake was painful to watch
I think remaking old movies to attract new generations is a great idea what better way to attract younger generations to watch the best classic movies
God didnt have to watch Lifetime. He knows and sees all! Leave Him out of it!
I saw the movie and it was disappointing. The two young actors who played Shelby and Annette could use some acting classes. All of the other ladies were great as usual.
Who are you to say this was not an amazing cast..you must not have done your research..the Cosby girl..has a name..people remake plays and movies all the time..but when a classic play is remade into a African American version, then it’s such a bad ideal..please..this movie has plenty of substance, and heart..stop being so closed minded, I know ignorance is bliss at times..but come on..even the judge through the case out..thank you lifetime.
Plays are redone everyday on broadway and thousands of actors have played iconic roles over and over again. And no one has a problem with it. It seems to me the only people who have an issue are the idiots who thought the first film version was the only version out there. Get educated before you start blabbing. Why is the world so full of ignorant people that have no education? And we wonder why China is kicking our butts!
This was a total disgrace to the original!
It had a lot of wonderful/talented actors and actress’s, but it will NEVER be the original! The movie was supposed to be exact yet at the end: where is the funeral?!? When miran needs to hit WEEZER is at the cemetary not the salon! Plus the movie just SUCKED
