EXCLUSIVE: Imagine Entertainment‘s Brian Grazer has bolstered his long desire to turn James Brown‘s life story into a feature film. Tate Taylor, who adapted and made his helming debut on The Help, is in negotiations to direct the untitled project. Another musical icon, Mick Jagger, has joined Grazer as producer. The film will be a co-production between Jagged Films, based on a screenplay by Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth. Grazer and Jagger will produce along with Jagged’s Victoria Pearman and Imagine’s Erica Huggins. They will now look for distribution, and to find an actor who can play Brown.
The story charts a young boy’s rise from extreme poverty and violence to become The Godfather Of Soul, one of the most influential black artists in history whose career spanned six decades. Grazer started the project at a time when the singer himself was an active part in its development, before he died in late 2006.
The Butterworths most recently scripted the Doug Liman-directed Fair Game, which starred Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. Now, the question is who has the chops to play the singer. Eddie Murphy once did a stellar impression of the singer, but that was a long time ago. Anthony Mackie?
For now, Grazer was glad to have the project moving forward with Jagger and Taylor, calling Brown “one of the most electric, exciting stage performers of all time.”
Said Jagger: “It’s a great honor to be involved with a project as rich as the story of the legendary James Brown. He was a mesmerizing performer with a fascinating life.”
Brown’s family will continue to be part of the package. “I am deeply honored that Mick Jagger and Brian Grazer, two of my husband James Brown’s favorite people, have entered into a partnership to bring his inspirational story to the big screen,” added Brown’s widow, Tommie Rae Brown. Added his daughter, Deanna Brown Thomas: “My father’s music has been a beacon to people all over the world and now his life story will impact future generations and show Why he is respected as The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown!”
CAA is packaging the film and will represent its domestic distribution rights.

I choose… Wayne Brady!
Congrats to Tate……I’ll bet Octavia will play James Brown now.
An exciting prospect! Anthony Mackie is a great idea, although if he gets the part I’d hope his agent will give props to DH for the plug…nah, never happen.
its about time. Only one person can play him though. Wesley snipes. He’s soulful enuff
Nate Parker!
I’m glad that somebody has finally taken on the project to get it going! Mr. Brown deserves to be documented and it’s long overdue! He was the best live stage performer I ever saw in life! There will never be another badder soul brother than James Brown period!
Hello my name is Lisa Holtzclaw-Martin CEO of Augusta Stock Music Fest. We are thrilled to see that James Brown is finally receiving the recognition he so richly deserves. He was a Musical Genius before his time, and has had a profound influence on evry genre of music out there now.He did many philanthropic things for his home city that through his legacy continue until the present. Best of luck with your project and let us know if we can be of any help whatsoever. I want to say ot Loud and say it Proud !!! Augusta, Ga is honored to be part of his legacy.
Lisa: Thanks for taking the time to post your recognition of James Brown! He was a legend before his time. From Lindy, Detroit City – Long Live Rock!
Brian McKnight as an older James Brown
I say Wayne Brady too!
Uhhhh Lisa from Augusta, Ga…. Oh never mind.
I say you get T.I. or Ludacris to play James and let Nikki Minaj play his first black wife. Lady Gaga can play the white chick he was with before he died.
Will be a brilliant music + dance film. But why no mention of Peter Afterman (producer of “It Might Get Loud”) as one of Producers/EP. It is Afterman who reps James Brown Estate AND The Rolling Stones for film music. Peter approached Mick and Grazer and CAA and orchestrated the entire movie deal with all parties. And it’s Peter who controls all the James Brown catalog for music used in any movie adaptation of singers life story, SO…
Im sure it was oversight by your writer but tough to read these big announcements and the key man is invisible or sidelined or unknowingly disrespected or not given proper credit, you know. Let the record stand corrected now. Great work Peter and I know this movie will get made and be awesome reminder for world of JB’s groundbreaking talent that paved way for Prince, Sly Stone etc.
This will be epic!!!!! The god father of soul can’t wait too See this film & have a DVD of it to . When is the release date ?
<3 this .
Don Cheadle would kill it.
Ahem. James Brown was not the most influential “black” artist, just as Mick is not an influential “white” artist. James Brown’s influence went beyond the segregated music industry even when he first began. Not that being described as “black” is a sorry-ass attempt at marginalization, it is just plain damn inaccurate, and damn near insulting to segregate his legacy. No James Brown, no Mick either, or at least the “black” elements of music and performance Mick appropriated or imitated from African-American artists. Getting real sick of this.
Good point.
Tony Wilson is my choice he was personally chosen by james brown himself and has worked exclusively with tomirae brown Bootsy Collins and have been keeping james browns Legacy alive before and after we lost the godfather additionally he has more energy than anyone Ive ever met Simply check him out type in Tony Wilson James Brown in youtube ot tony wilson bootsy collins Tony was Named The Young James Brown By James Brown Himself on the movie set funkblast and beat the devil shortfilm that brown selected tony wilson to portray him,Tony is an actor/entertainer and vocallist.
WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY BUT, “FINALLY”!!
HIS MILLIONS OF FANS, CAN FINALLY BREATHE A SIGH OF RELIEF.
THERE ARE SO MANY OF US WHO STILL CARE, AND ARE STILL PROUD OF HIM, AND WILL NEVER, EVER, FORGET HIM. JUST DO IT RIGHT !!
I agree on Tony Wilson the young james brown Brilliant performer
I agree Tony Wilson is the only one can move like the godfather of soul. Of couse I got soul too and I’m Super bad.
I have been waiting for the JB story for many years. JB inspired Prince, Michael and even Jagger himself. Jagger has moves like Brown! Just watch the famous TAMI Show. Bootsy has a cat in his camp who does a dead-on Brown. Ask Bootsy.
I believe the “cat” in Bootsy’s camp must be the incredible Tony Wilson !! Personally named and mentored by the Legend himself as “The Young James Brown”. He’s definately got ALL the right moves, and a voice to match The Man. I third, fourth, AND fifth this nomination !!!
Take notice of the man who trained & toured with James Brown who was his protege Tony Wilson (Young James Brown) He came highly recommended by the Godfather of Soul himself….ck him out on Youtube at the Apollo!!!
The only actor who could play the part of James Brown in my opinion is Cuba Gooding Jr.
Eddie Murphy Nuff said !!!!!!!!!!!!
Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy!!!!!!!!!
