Now this was a satisfying brawl providing steak and sizzle for TV audiences and pundits alike. Punch, punch. Jab, jab. ‘Malarkey’ becomes the new buzz word. I thought Joe Biden won it on facts and details yet Paul Ryan held his own. Except on Afghanistan. It was a great 90 minutes of television. (But why didn’t both men look directly into the TV cameras more?) Deadline is waiting for your opinions.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I thought Biden was much more compelling, believable and thought he won. I thought Ryan looked like he was going to cry.
Compelling like a fox. A rabid, interrupting, and extremely annoying fox.
And I’m a Liberal. God only knows how the Independents will interpret this Malarky Machine.
Oh you’re liberal because you say so. Troll.
That’s cute. Name calling is the best you can do?
And, yes, I’m Liberal because I say so. And because I’m smart.
LOL, love it. Called out.
Biden at his best. This was his debate prep – YouTube search “Biden the villages” – one heartbeat away LOL
The only thing that people are talking about today is Biden’s crazed laughing, inappropriate loopy grins when talking about Iran, smirking, eye rolling, rude interruptions and a nasty aggressive (but not signaling strength) weird finger jab to the woman moderator.
Biden’s performance was a thousand times worse than Al Gore’s sighs.
The Obama team seems very unstable and too extreme at both ends. Obama was catatonic and Biden was over the top.
There needs to be a calm middle ground.
Funny how Romney’s unhinged performance last week qualifies as “calm middle ground” but Biden’s stripping Ryan down to his civvies was “over the top”. Ryan got his rear end kicked and didn’t have any facts to present. He looked like a little scared schoolboy.
You can sit there stone-faced, or have natural reactions, when the person across from you is spewing lies and not answering questions and not showing his Math, but ok.
Biden probably won on substance but I have to agree–all that anyone is talking about at work the next day is Biden’s bizarre giggling and laughing. I don’t think the debate helped or hurt anyone, but I do think people will remember his odd behavior.
On substance, dead even.
On radio, Biden.
On TV, Ryan.
On points, Ryan— for in the final analysis, Ryan had one job: to show that he could hold his own with a sitting Vice President and pass the VP test himself.
But did Ryan really hold his own?
Biden schooled him HARD on the stimulus, using Ryan’s own letters to highlight the congressman’s hypocrisy.
Ryan tried to reiterate his points about Afghanistan and troop withdrawal, but he was already dusted after trotting out the tired old saw about listening to the commanders on the ground and having Biden come right back with being in the room with the Joint Chiefs listening to their recommendations.
And those are just two snippets from a thorough shellacking.
I really don’t care who wins this election; either way, my car has a fresh bumper sticker that reads “Don’t Blame Me – I wanted Ron Paul for President!”
Unfortunately we did not obtain any real information from the interaction. VP Biden insolent and rude, obstructing any constructive exchanges. Maybe that was his goal.
Vice President Biden is a more knowledgeable and experienced politician than Mr. Ryan. And why not — he has many more seasons under his belt.
Wisdom vs.Youthful Energy.
If Eddie Munster and Pee Wee Herman had a baby, it would be Paul Ryan.
Best comment on board!
I thought of Eddie as well! Thought I was original! We think alike!
Keep Big Bird not DoDo Bird!
Biden was exceptionally feisty and on point – bravo.
Won??? haha that shit eating smile he had on his face lost it for him alone… with the american people. As far as facts go… the gov. has come out and said a “major” state did not provide their employment/unemployment figures. Biden is a Dinosaur that needs to be retired
The Dinosaur at least can ‘retire’, get SS even though he doesn’t need it. So you better start saving BIG BUCKS ’cause if you don’t you’re gonna wish you hadn’t backed the RR team.
Thought both did ok, but Biden was sharper. I did not like Biden’s demeanor.
I agree.
Biden won.
I agree with Nikke…and I’ll add that I thought it was a mistake for Biden to point his finger so often, and the cynical laughter was unnecessary. However, his overall detailed knowledge and experience clearly showed what a superior candidate he is. Ryan just held his own…which in today’s environment is tough.
Also, Ryan needs a new makeup person…he looked like a clown.
Biden won the debate both on substance and integrity! He told FACTS while Ryan just blabbed about his bad economic and foreign policies.
I don’t know what facts Biden had, but the whole point of this election is the inane obama policies that are driving down the economy, and his oversees policy of love of the muslim brotherhood that empowers them and puts us at risk. Biden has facts? Are you kidding. I won’t ask him for directions to the local library.
Joe Biden mopped the floor with little Eddie Munster, it was almost painful to watch someone so out of his league get schooled by a master.
Kind of like Obama getting schooled by Romney last week.
You sound impartial.
Biden hit it out of the park!
Biden looked nuts!
I think it was a good debate, but for sure Joe won with the important things. Paul didn’t do poorly except on Afghanistan and a few other things. The fact Ryan thinks government should make decisions for women didn’t work, nor did the medicare vouchers. I think Joe was funny laughing and I think it was that he was dismayed at what Ryan was saying at times. The knowledge of things that Joe has, totally out-shined many of Ryan’s ideas. But at least it was lively and had energy.
I know Obama is going to win and thank God for that. If the Romney and Ryan were to be elected it would be a total disaster. So we cannot let that happen. We need to bring back the middle class and although Ryan was raised Middle Class he has forgotten that and is so righteous. He doesn’t belong in the White House and certainly Romney doesn’t belong there at all. His wife is obviously blind and hard of hearing as she showed us on the air, saying that Romney doesn’t lie. That is all he does. He cannot win.
I am so tired of people talking about the middle class. Is that all you want for yourself? Do you not want to become more than middle class? Why is it that this administration has brain washed people like yourself in thinking that middle class is all that you can become. That is what is so awesome about being in America that you can be anything you want , more than you had even dreamed of. Why is everyone so brainwashed on settling for “middle class” and attack those who inspire and become more than middle class. I am a single mom who has worked very long hours, who supported my two daughters by myself. Worked two jobs at times, but didn’t give up and settle, I wanted more , and my drive and ambition took me to total financial independence. It wasn’t handed to me. I wasn’t hateful or resentful of those who had more when I was struggling. It just made me more driven to become financially independent. At the Dem Convention holding up “Middle Class” signs is so ridiculous. Stop being a hater of those who have more than you and be happy for people who have done well for themselves. This administration has brought out hatred in the less fortunate against those who have done well. STOP IT!
Barbara – Congrats. Sounds like you are a member of the middle class to me.
Congrats Barbara. I agree with you. But most people are too lazy to put in the required work and make progress in their learning to be able to work smarter to improve. They would rather sit and watch TV 4 hours a night instead of working on a side business, film, book, etc.
No one hates the middle class (except, so far as I can tell, some very wealthy people), so the focus your tirade seems misplaced. Also, you seem to completely ignore the fastest growing segment of Americans, the poor and near poor. Maybe they’d like to just get to be middle class someday. To me, helping that happen for the most people is the worthiest goal, not your desire to get “more.”
I think you are missing the point of the “Middle Class”, Barbara. It is not that everyone strives to want to be in the middle class, it just happens to be where the majority of Americans are right now. And, some of them can claim to be “a single mom who has worked very long hours, who supported two daughters…worked two jobs at times, but didn’t give up and settle, (and) wanted more.” I am glad that it worked out for you, but you are in the minority, and it has nothing to do with your drive. Statistically, there will always be more “Middle Class” than “Upper Class” and “Poor”. The arguement is that they don’t want to be forgotten while the rich get richer and the poor get handouts.
Biden is the clear winner, and Obama should thank him for saving his ass. Ryan seemed to prepare for a speech not a debate. Biden laughed a bit too much but Romney and Ryans bullshit can be laughable.
I was raised in PA and am Joe’s age. he is a 100% honest, straight talking guy. Joe was letting off a little steam of disagreement with Ryan, when he smiled and unfortunately interrupted too much, rather than blowing up and maybe commit a gaffe.
IMHO a draw for undecideds– although how anyone can be undecided at this point is beyond reason.
Ryan held his own and Joe showed his boss how it’s done. If his boss had done it like this last week the election would be over. Politics is and always will be blood sport and Obama is arrogant enough to think he can change the rules somehow. NEWSFLASH MR. PRESIDENT: You bring a GUN to gun fight.
Remember that when you hanging out with Jimmy Carter. #Pussy
It was a lively debate with both candidate making some aggressive comments. VP Biden was particularly effective in setting the record straight on what the Obama admin has accomplished. Something the President failed to do in his debate. I believe he was the most convincing of the two. However, Rep. Ryan handled himself quite well, but offered few specifics, preferring to point to Obama policies he believed have not worked.
No contest! Not a fair fight! Biden OWNED that little boy!
Draw. And debate will have no impact on the election. Quayle got killed in ’88 and Bush still won 40 states. Ryan held his own once the VP stopped his disrespectful laughing, snickering, goofy smiling and childlike interrupting. Romney still has a huge edge (now leading 51% to 44% in Florida). And I’m an Independent.
Florida alone will not give him the election. And what poll are you quoting? I’ll give you this. The GOP gained momentum last week. That momentum did not translate much in the swing states. More than likely, Biden stopped their momentum tonight. The swing states decides this thing. Obama is ahead in those states. Take a lesson in the electorate college, and acknowledge the fact that the gop is at a disadvantage for this election.
You may not have liked Biden’s demeanor , but he won that debate hands down
Martha was by far the best on stage.
Biden and Ryan were a draw on substance…but, Biden lost style points for smiling, laughing and interrupting way too often. Whether you agree with Ryan or not, he was focused, polite and respectful of the debate process.
Yeah. Ryan was polite. Unlike Mitt. Right? He wasn’t polite, he had a plan. Just didn’t know what it was and couldn’t explain his partner’s plan for USA. All the BS about ‘we’re gonna do this, we have a plan to do that’, BUT neither Romney nor Ryan say what and “HOW.”
EXACTLY. Even the moderator lady kept repeting to Ryan “you offer no specifics”. Ryan is a CLOWN.
EXACTLY. Even the moderator lady kept repeating to Biden “you offer no specifics”….oh, wait, she just did that to Ryan. Biden offered plenty of specifics on… oh, wait…..
Biden showed everyone just what a buffoon he is. One heartbeat away…really people, really?
It was a great debate. Couldn’t take my eyes off it. Biden was the best I’ve ever seen him (aside from the eye-rolling). He was THE fact checker tonight, and he re-energized Democrats. Though Ryan held his own at times, he was in way over his head, especially on foreign policy. Biden totally nailed it.
My opinion: there’s plenty of other place online for people to rant and rave about their politics, and Deadline shouldn’t turn even a small corner of it’s entertainment news site into a political forum.
Hey Dan.. go read People and Gawker!
AMEN.
Biden was smug and disrespectful. The hard-core left will love it, but most people will be put off by his behavior, especially when he sniffed when Ryan thanked him at the end of the debate.
Martha Radich was also weak. Not only did she let Biden constantly interrupt Ryan’s answers, she also interrupted Ryan whenever he went after Biden. Didn’t see her challenge Biden to the same degree.
Ryan held his own, but was too deferential towards the crotchety old man.
Nailed it.
Paul Ryan is a LIAR.
Nikki, Joe is the one I trust to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, based on his knowledge of domestic and foreign policy, track record of judgment–and better still, being less judgmental of non-Carholics, better separating church and state. Ryan, like Romney, cannot be trusted with basic women’s health freedoms and reproductive decisions that need to be between an individual woman and her doctor.
For what they inherited from the last GOP team, Pres. Obama and VP Biden stopped the hemmoraging and are leading the country well inspire of spiteful GOP congressional leaders who’d pledged to block whatever Dems tried to bring to the table. Some of my fellow Americans have been too quick to forget that you can’t fix 8 years of horrid missteps in 4 and really, we need to keep the current Admin. I do not trust Mitt or Paul, not on foreign or domestic anything. Tonight confirmed that.
Jules, we said and ‘spoken’. We will still be fixing what happened with the last GOP team for decades to come. It is easier to knock down a house than to build one.
Biden was Robert Young on Father Knows Best and
Ryan was Eddie Haskell on Leave It to Beaver.
Yeah Ima boomer and I just dated the hell outta myself….WhoooHaaaaa!
I am in my 20s and understand these references. Is that sad?
Not sad at all. Good for you
Nope, Alan. Not sad. For all those other younger people… better wise up if you haven’t already done so. You really want a ‘numbers’ guy a heartbeat away from being President who doesn’t know squat about history, other countries, etc.? I just love it when guys like Romney & Ryan who have little or no experience on foreign affairs know what other leaders think or will do. So, Ryan, you think like those running Iran, Russia, China, etc.? NOT. You’re so dumb!
Boomer here too and accurate references
Biden kicked Ryan’s a s s !
Ryan spoke like a typical Republican. Lying to protect the “circle’ from being penetrated by giving unclear answers. His responses were a grade above Sarah Palin.
Biden responded with intelligence, facts and heart. I love Joe Biden.
The loudest and most animated won? It’s come to that? Martha Raddatz was genius. Particularly on foreign policy. Her questions and comments often provoked on multiple levels. For instance – ladies – if Romney serves two terms as president – would Paul Ryan’s position on abortion become the inevitable end result (overturning Roe v. Wade) even if he himself makes an unsuccessful run at the presidency following those two terms? The “humanity” question – which Ryan didn’t answer (not good) – also excellent. But I thought Biden looked like he ordered a pizza over an hour ago and it hadn’t been delivered yet. Ryan made an excellent point though : When did “hope” “change” and “one” America turn into Lee Atwater? Oh. I forgot. Malcolm X. “By any means necessary.”
