EXCLUSIVE: Titus Welliver has been forced to leave the TNT drama pilot The Last Ship because of a family health emergency. The network would not elaborate, but Welliver’s wife has been ill.
In his first pilot since Chuck, NBC spy series’ co-star Adam Baldwin has been tapped to replace Welliver in Last Ship, executive produced by Michael Bay. Jonathan Mostow is set to direct the pilot written by Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane. Based on the novel by William Brinkley, The Last Ship centers on the crew of a naval destroyer who, after a global catastrophe decimates the Earth’s population, are forced to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors. Baldwin will play Mike Slattery, second in command to Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) onboard the USS Nathan James. He’s a fair man who cares deeply for his family. He and Tom clash at times over the best course of action. Baldwin, repped by A Management and APA, recently did an arc on NBC’s Law & Order: SVU and appeared on TNT’s drama Leverage.
As for Welliver, given the circumstances, I hear TNT brass may find another role for him on Last Ship if it goes to series.

Or maybe he’s in line for a role in the SHIELD series…
“after a global catastrophe decimates the Earth’s population.” Lately, it seems this scenario describes practically every other upcoming TV series and movie. Originality anyone?
Apparently there weren’t enough ripoffs of ON THE BEACH on the market already.
Really? Name three.
I hope Mrs. Welliver gets better!

Hope Welliver’s wife gets better soon.
Always nice to see the Deadwood alums out there working. But god dammit, I wish they gave that show a proper send-off.
Chuck me…
Big downgrade
Excellent news for Adam! I look forward to seeing this.
I hope Titus and his wife will be okay
Welliver is a great actor and a better person–thoughts and prayers with the Welliver family…
Maybe Baldwin can use the firepower of the destroyer to force the Chuck guys to re-do the last three minutes of that fun series’ horrible finale.
Bummer. I like Adam Baldwin but Titus has so much more gravitas and authority and would have killed on this show. Adam just strikes me as “available.”
Also, Eric Dane and Adam Baldwin are too similiar. They really should have cast two people more different. Doesn’t have to follow the book exactly after all. maybe a female as #2 given how important a role they are in the story.
Too bad about Titus Welliver’s family emergency. I’ve been a fan of his since I first saw him on Deadwood, and now he seems to pop up on nearly every show I watch.
I think Adam Baldwin is a good replacement choice.
I have a pitch. It’s called “Last Resort Ship”. Cruise ship is left wandering the oceans after a nuclear catastrophe. Big questions like “Do we continue partying?” or “Do we try and sail around the world giving aid and comfort from our floating paradise?” will be pondered. Each week different couples will fall in love. They may also be chased by Cylons from port to port. It will be epic.
As great an actor Titus is and he is , he is an even
Greater guy , he will always work , I wish his wife
Good health and full recovery …
