BREAKING: Belle Pictures and the Mark Gordon Company have set a film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Memphis at Warner Bros-based Alcon Entertainment. Mark Gordon and Molly Smith will produce with Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Smith has a four-year first-look deal with Alcon.
Created by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, Memphis is currently touring the United States through the summer of 2013. DiPietro will write the screen musical adaptation of the hugely popular stage show. Memphis also won an Emmy for its PBS airing of the original Broadway production.
In Memphis, a white DJ whose love of R&B music and an up-and-coming black singer sparked a dangerous affair during the rise of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. It won the Tony for Best Musical in 2010, along with Best Book of a Musical, Best Score and Best Orchestration.
The Mark Gordon Company’s Allyson Seeger and Gordon began acquiring the rights to “Memphis” approximately two years ago, and Seeger is executive producing the film.

I freely admit that Jennifer Hudson and Justin Timberlake are obvious choices, but these days MUSICALS NEVER SUCCEED WITHOUT A-LIST TALENT. These two are both hugely popular singers and fairly successful actors, which is more than enough. Who else can they cast and be able to put “Academy Award Winner” on the posters and in the trailers?
Translation: Don’t make any money, studio putting up MILLIONS to make this movie! Cast people no 1′s ever heard of so there’s no incentive whatsoever for audiences to put down their hard earned $ to see this Broadway show only people traveling to NY have seen!

I think Huey and Felecia should be unknowns. If name actors are required, put them in the supporting roles and let two newcomers have at the main parts.
Use the original cast members from the Broadway show, Chad Kimball and Montego Glover. They are what made the characters and the show what is is today!
I’ve heard incredible things about Allyson Seeger’s work. That combined with the Tony award winning play, it has to be a blockbuster.
