EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that the deal coming together will turn bestselling author James Patterson’s crime novel Double Cross into a 2nd movie starring Tyler Perry as the famous Washington DC crimefighter/psychologist. Perry’s first turn as Alex Cross opens this Friday from QED. Summit Entertainment is distributing in the U.S. It’s Perry’s first lead role that he didn’t produce or direct or write – and his reviews so far have been rather good. Certainly a lot better than I expected from the star of the crossdressing Madea movies. Although the critics have been harsh on helmer Rob Cohen and
the film as a whole. QED International’s Bill Block put together Alex Cross at a cost of only $25M (lowered to $23M with Louisiana tax subsidies). He chased down the book rights from Patterson for under $1 million, then hired Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson to pen the screenplay with Patterson. Then Block and Patterson sought out Tyler’s WME agent Charles King. After meetings in Atlanta, QED signed the actor for $5M upfront. Perry took over the role from Morgan Freeman who first played Alex Cross in the films Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider. Amazingly, Perry didn’t want to write, direct or produce the movie. He didn’t even want to move the location to his home base in Georgia for all his creature comforts. And he had the leverage, too. Instead Perry wanted QED to run the project so he could focus solely on his acting. Maybe next time Perry should direct, too.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

You have got to be kidding me.
Does a 16% on Rotten Tomatoes count as “rather good” these days?
Next time Perry should DIRECT? I think the still-as-yet legal marijuana being smoked in LA has been exhaled into your apartment, Nikki. What has he ever directed that’s had a great story and great performances? The trailer looked pretty good, but he’s not an actor of talent or a director with chops. He’s a cookie cutter with an audience that loves his (below)average Entemenn’s cookies.
I was right with you up until you said the trailer looked good, then you lost me. Because the trailer looks unintentionally hilarious. Perry is just not an action star, his face, his intensity, his mannerisms just all seem off. I saw him playing a beautiful woman’s husband in one of his other movies, and it was one of the more awkward scenes in an otherwise okay movie.
Then you mentioned Entemann’s, and you brought me back!
The movie is awful. There will be no sequel
It’s already been confirmed…movie sucked hard core. I loved the books and was really let down, because they basically used the name of a killer and “Alex Cross’ That was it the movie was terrible with slim to none good points.
The first Alex Cross movies were terrible and absolutely murdered the books. So I was happy when this new one was happening. But then I found out that the same screenwriter who ruined it the first time also wrote this one so I just said, well, what’s the point of this then? But then I also found out Rachel Nichols is in it so I’ll watch it anyway.
Agreed. Rachel Nichols is awesome.
Every time the preview runs in theaters, the audiences laugh when they show Tyler Perry as Alex Cross. They don’t believe him in the role. I don’t think audiences are going to show up, even if reviews are good. And the reviews I’ve seen have not been good.
Probably because, like me, in their mind they’re picturing him in all the scenes. And that mental image is funny as hell.
“Picturing him as Madea” I meant.
I’m not a Tyler Perry fan, I’ve never even seen one of his movies, and was surprised at this casting choice. Being said, I wouldn’t count that guy out on anything, and if Bill Block is lining the sequel up, I have to think he’s pretty confidant about the upcoming weekend.
Wondering the same thing as many people. Planning a sequel when the trailer for the yet-to-be-released film smells like a flop sounds much like desperation decoration before the shit hits the fan.
The Morgan Freeman films were pretty terrible but at least they had an internationally known name attached. Try selling Tyler Perry to people in the old world. In fact, try selling him beyond his core audience in the new one.
There is one and only one reason to see Alex Cross. Matthew Fox. Scariest villain since Hannibal Lecter.
Hahaha…Tyler Perry is sitting on probably $200 mil and little internet trolls think they’re smarter than him…hahahaha… I wouldn’t be surprised if he became as big as Will Smith or Denzel
Not a TP fan by any means, but you can never tell what will hit. Especially with Tyler Perry fans. If you’d told me last year a movie about a talking teddy bear, written by the “Family Guy” guy, would be a worldwide smash hit, I would have laughed in your face.
It is significant that in the television ads at least (I haven’t seen the theatrical trailer), there is no mention whatsoever of the name of the movie`s star.
Good reviews? It currenly has a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. What reviews are you seeing?
Rotten tomatoes’ Top Critics gives A.C. a 0% rating…0%! Editor in Chief Nikki Finke, what in the world are you talking about?! My favorite review from the Arizona Republic “Picture Alan Alda in the role of Dirty Harry”
Combined, Perry and Patterson have summed up over $200M in income last year. These guys eat movie stars for lunch when it comes to money. They are making a product that has large appeal, sells well, and they generate income for their production companies. If it sells, it’s great, as far as business is concerned. Business through entertainment first, art last.
Yikes. So much negativity… when critiquing you should mention the positive first. We all need some kind of hope or what’s the point.
Personally I think of Tyler Perry as Madea LOL!
Rottentomatoes = 16%
This film will bomb this weekend.
Doubtful Perry’s audience will carry over, as to some extent, families can go see his Madea films, and this is just supposed to be gruesome. The violence will keep his fans away, and the general audience doesn’t like or properly even know him.
BOMB de BOMB BOMB BOMB!
Reviews don’t always affect the box office you know.
Just look at any of Perry’s previous films.
This would’ve worked as a comedy.
Not to be a white knight but reading the article I see Nikki was referring to the reviews of Tyler Perry as Alex Cross not the quality of the movie plot or lack of direction.
I’m still wondering which reviews she read who like “Tyler Perry” in this role. B/c most I read think he’s awful and wooden:
“The first thing you’ll want to know about “Alex Cross” is: Can Tyler Perry carry it off? The answer is: Sort of, but not really.”– Washington Post
“Tyler Perry should not give up his day job.” — USA Today
“Picture Alan Alda in the title role of “Dirty Harry,” and you have a good idea why Tyler Perry playing a hard-edged cop in “Alex Cross” doesn’t work.” — Arizona Republic
“Perry’s supposed to be its center. And as an actor – certainly as a movie star – he’s absolutely nowhere to be found.” – Newark Star-Ledger
“Stripped down to his undershirt or brandishing an assault rifle, Perry looks both incongruous and ridiculous – an icon out of water.” –Globe and Mail
“Imagine Bob Uecker pinch-hitting for Stan Musial, and you get an idea what it’s like to see hyphenate Tyler Perry step into Morgan Freeman’s shoes.” –Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
“Casting Perry as Cross was a bad idea…” — Associated Press
It makes me wonder if there is some unseen force for some unseen reason trying to protect Perry or blindly talk him up???
Not a TP fan by any stretch, but he has a core audience of about 5 million who will watch him take a leak and open with a $25 million weekend. Funny, though, there is no Facebook push among the African-American audience on the level of his Madea pics or the Tuskegee Airman phenom (which was bananas of FB). Plus, this may bring in the black male hardcore action fans looking for a diversion and something to talk about with their wives/girlfriends. He is critic proof.
@ Ripsnorter I’m confused how the Morgan Freeman films could have been terrible when audiences enjoyed them 3 times as much as the critics? Did you check this at all before you wrote it or just make an assumption?
Exactly, reviews don’t always determine box office. Look at Taken 2. Closing in on $100 million, double the budget, and was skewered by critics.
I think people on this website are ignoring the fact MOST of Tyler Perry’s core audience are BLACK. Remember, just because mainstream white film critics don’t like Perry’s work does NOT mean his films can’t be successful. The Madea franchise and the Why did I get married movies have proven Perry is SUCCESSFUL at the BOX OFFICE regardless of what critics think.
Tyler Perry has over $500 million in the bank I doubt some critics negative reviews is going to stop this guy.
I don’t think an $11.8 million/fifth place opening weekend is ever considered successful. At this rate, the movie may break even, and that’s the nicest thing anybody will be able to say about it. This isn’t about white critics’ reviews; people vote with their dollars, and it’s clear that only part of his core audience tuned in here. The target demographic for “Alex Cross” doesn’t overlap very much with the audience for Perry’s typical chitlin’ circuit bullshit morality plays, usually with him in the lead as a a loud-mouthed, neck-rolling, cross-dressing Granny. That’s what he built his empire on (that and “Amos ‘n’ Andy” for the New Millenium filth like “House of Payne,” for which the conceit is “fat + black + loud = funny” and set the race back two centuries), and, in the process, he typecast himself both in front of and behind the camera. I went to see “Kiss The Girls” and “Along Came a Spider” in theaters and the audiences were probably about 85-90% white, even though I saw the films in a city with a very large black population, because that’s who’s reading the Alex Cross novels. This film needed to be able to appeal a healthy mix of folks to be successful, and Tyler Perry was not the right casting choice for a leading man because his appeal is so limited (and he’s fenced himself in).
I hope there’s time for them to un-ink the deal on a sequel for this; I happened to like Morgan Freeman in this role and Perry is not a worthy successor. And I can’t believe they passed over Idris Elba to cast him in it. Whatever; not my money, not my Q score.
One bad Alex Cross portrayal by Tyler F…Perry is too many. Please do Not recast him in this role that really matters to many of us who read his books. Let him make another Madea movie. That’s more his style and what he’s better qualified to do.
