NBC has bought Undateable, a buddy comedy from Bill Lawrence and Adam Sztykiel (Due Date, Made Of Honor). The multi-camera project, which has received a script commitment with penalty, is based on the book Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won’t Be Dating Or Having Sex, by Ellen Rakieten & Anne Coyle. Written by Sztykiel with Lawrence supervising, it is described as a bromantic comedy about two very different guys who are bonded by their common inability to attract women. Sztykiel and Lawrence will executive produce with Jeff Ingold for Warner Bros TV and Lawrence’s studio-based Doozer.
The book lists things that would render men undateable, rating them by level of offense. The list includes such no-nos as wearing socks with sandals, pleated shorts or soul patches or jogging in place at stoplights. Ingold found the book, which was optioned by Warner Bros TV, and Sztykiel was brought in to write the script.
This is the third comedy sale for Doozer this season. The other two, also based on books, are I Suck At Girls, which got a pilot production commitment at Fox, and Ali In Wonderland, which is a put pilot at NBC. Last season, Sztykiel’s comedy script Awesometown went to pilot at ABC with 20th Century Fox TV producing. Lawrence and Doozer are with ICM Partners; Sztykiel is with UTA and Kaplan/Perrone.

Go read Adam Sztykiel’s pilot from last year. I dare you to tell me that guy is a talented writer.
Not that I begrudge the sale – by the time writers get through the studio process, networks are almost exclusively getting junk to choose from; plus, Bill Lawrence is a true talent – but a penalty for this? Bad concept, bad writer, come on.
I agree with all you wrote except the part about Bill Lawrence being a true talent. I was not familiar with the name so I IMDB’d him and I have not laughed at one of those programs.
So how does “Undateable” differ from “I Suck at Girls”? Seriously. Maybe NBC and Fox can air them against each other.
At the top of the Undateable list: Pointing at a camera and saying “Boo-Yaa”.
Before any notorious negative deadline comments appear, just wanted to say congratulations to my favorite writer, Bill Lawrence! Love his shows, his twitter, and his deadline comments…which I’m assuming will appear on this article. If I’m right, Hi Mr. Lawrence, can’t wait for Cougar Town on January 8th!
My favorite Deadline comment of all time. Let the haters hate. LOVE BILL AND LOVE THE BOOK! Go Doozer.
Sztykiel plus Lawrence = YES! Finally I hope NBC airs a show that guys can watch. Yes, we do still watch tv and in huge numbers…
The book was hilarious. In Bill’s hands it is sure to be a laugh riot!
Finally Tal & the gang have picked up a multi-camera with the talent to prove it!
I think these shows don’t work because the whole dating thing skews much more female and women want to see themselves in the lead, not some dude. Thus Girls, Sex and the City, Ally McBeal among others have shined while What About Brian, Mind of the Married Man, Men of A Certain Age all quickly died. The book may be terrific, but it’s one thing to sell a few thousand copies and another to appeal to 5 or 6 million a week.
You are not even comparing shows in the same group. Comparing Sex and the City to What About Brian is like comparing the French to the English.
Guys want to see guys on tv…and if you don’t believe me, just ask Chuck Lorre.
This year there are finally interesting looking multi-cams, mainly Faith, The Housewives, Live from Our Living Room, and the untitled Nick Thune/Jimmy Fallon project. Still, the single-cams this year look better (like always).
Speaking of Bill Lawrence, does anyone know why Like Father didn’t work out last year?
enough with the loser incompetent men – it’s gotten unfunny!
