USA Network has made its decision on Common Law official, pulling the plug on the freshman drama. “I can confirm to those who have asked that we are not renewing Common Law,” USA’s SVP Ted Linhart tweeted this afternoon. “Thanks to all the fans who watched and expressed their support.”

USA had already pretty much written Common Law off — it let the options on the cast, led by Michael Ealy and Warren Kole, lapse. Additionally, Craig Sweeny, executive producer/showrunner on the first season, moved on, joining CBS’ new drama Elementary as an executive producer. Common Law, about cops (Ealy, Kole) ordered into counseling, debuted in May to 2.48 million viewers. Its freshman season, which aired on Fridays, has averaged a little over 2 million viewers with a 0.6 18-49 rating to rank as the lowest-rated scripted series currently on USA.

The problem with this show was they were trying to make an hour-long comedy, but only Sonya Walger had comedy experience. Monk worked because it had funny people, Psych works because it has funny people, Common Law had drama actors trying for a dramedy. Didn’t work. Shame, because the show was well-written.
An attractive cast and the premise could have worked, but it was a severely poorly written show. PSYCH has a better balance of comedy and character. Hope Ealy gets a better shot soon.
Warren Cole is phenomenal and deserves to be seen more widely.
Such a shame, I really enjoyed the show!
How many eps were there total before it got the hook?
Not awful, but not outstanding. And if its departure in any way helps FAIRLY LEGAL get a pickup, it’s jake with me.
Fan of many USA shows but this one didn’t ever get me. I think I am allergic to counseling and therapy. Makes me struggle with go on and anger management. Sopranos may be my favorite show of all time but they Lorraine bracco sessions did my head in.
Maybe I need to see someone about this phobia… Nah
I loved it. Great chemistry between the leads and I love therapy. Boo and hiss to USA for cancelling it.
I gave it two episodes and stopped watching. While not horrible, the characters and premise just weren’t engaging for me.
The show had an attractive cast & was well written. The staggering difference in the personalities of Ealy & Cole is what made the show! They were a 2012 version of Miami Vice! Sad to see it go!
Common Law and Necessary Roughness. My husband and I look so forward to watching these two shows. Burn Notice as gone down his.
I LOVED this show, and I’m heartbroken about the cancelation. I had it programmed on my DVR to record when it was to come back on. My friends and I will be starting a protest to bring it back on the air.
I can’t believe you cancelled this great show. We looked forward to it every time it came on. Is there not chance that you will change you mind and bring it back?
