Warner Bros has staked out March 14, 2014 for All You Need Is Kill, the Doug Liman-directed film that stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The Dante Harper-scripted film unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.
But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Groundhog Day meets Independence Day… didn’t even try to change the character names
Good catch! That’s hilarious.
But this does seem like a cool mash-up. And Cruise taking more and more sci-fi alien invasion films speaks covertly to his preferred, eh hem, worldviews.
A no brainer for Cruise.
So after they kill all the aliens and win the war, they have to find a way for Cage to stay alive forever or he’ll go right back to that moment that keeps repeating and have to fight the war all over again?! Or will having Cage killed by someone other than the alien break the cycle?
I don’t know… wait for the actual movie to come out, maybe? Or read the book it’s based on? Or something?
It seems as if this entire film is composed from the combat action sequences that ended up on the editing room floor from “Groundhog Day” back in 1993.
Quite surprised that it isn’t mentioned in this post that this movie is based on a book by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
I liked this better when it was called Source Code…
It’s actually very different from SOURCE CODE. I would say it’s more STARSHIP TROOPERS meets GROUNDHOG DAY. This role would have been better suited for a younger actor, though, as the script originally had Billy Cage being 20. But this is about as high concept as it gets and I can see why Cruise would want to do it. I’m excited for this.
I’d say it sounds more like Armor by John Steakley. It’s a sci-fi classic. Felix is a soldier wearing an armored suit who is sent into battle over and over. It’s caused by a glitch in a computer that keeps sending his unit to fight because they were wiped out, except for Felix. And so he fights and fights and fights. The trauma of constant battle causes him to create the Machine, a sort of split personality that takes over and does the fighting. I wonder if this movie is in anyway based on Armor as it does sound similar.
The book predated Source Code.
WTF kind of title is that — what’s the celebration? In this world and during these times, to title a movie (I won’t call it a film) with a play on words of All You Need is Love — and connect it to killing — is just exploitive and BS and ridiculously unimaginative.
That’s the title of the book, translated from Japanese.
Sounds good!
Isn’t Maleficent already scheduled for March 14, 2014? Two different demos I guess, but I still feel like someone might move. This is March, not Memorial Day.
Wait…, Warners are co-financing this picture with Village Roadshow AND Legendary Pictures? Interesting. Very interesting.
The draft of the script I read (and the draft that sold) had a 19yo protagonist. And now, once it has gone through the crushing gears of development, it is a vehicle for Tom Cruise.
…yes, just as RAIN MAN went through the crushing gears of development to turn the original older brother character into the younger brother played by Tom Cruise. And we all know how bad that turned out.
Don’t worry, Warner Borg, there will be other comments on Deadline today that will also attempt to be smarmy and “all-so-knowing”, you aren’t alone.
hey, i’m not all knowing, but i also read the draft that sold and sorry to piss in your wheaties, but that role is not for a 51 year old man– tom cruise or no tom cruise. it truly calls for a YOUNG WARRIOR with the ability to GO FOR A LONG TIME. sorry, but 50 year olds, no matter how trained they are, are still 50.
i am not going to be able to suspend my disbelief and buy that a 50 year old could go through that much battle, for that long and triumph. And emily blunt isn’t even 30– she plays the love interest, a soldier too, but still A LOVE INTEREST. yes, he can buy a love interest 20 years younger than himself in real life, but nobody suspended their disbelief for THAT relationship either.
Your statement “yes he can buys a love interest 20 years younger than himself in real life”, pretty much obviates any comment you make since it’s clear you are just another irrational Tom Cruise-hater. You don’t know him, or his ex-wife, or know anything other than what you read in tabloids, which your little mind assumes must be correct.
Be that as it may, you do understand that in story-telling, in this case screenwriting, characters and their journeys can be rewritten, right? That does make it through your urine-obsessed mind? And if you haven’t seen Cruise recently, he’s in the sort of physical shape most 20-year-olds would envy.
C’mon now – Woody Allen was doing romantic leads who were 25-30 years younger than him before he realized how ridiculous it looked.
“Don’t worry, Warner Borg, there will be other comments on Deadline today that will also attempt to be smarmy and “all-so-knowing”, you aren’t alone.”
Good grief.
A) Nothing about my comment was untrue and B) frankly you can’t possibly be this sensitive and be in the entertainment industry.
Some junior agent or manager would have pecked out your eyes long ago.
Great post, Ian Haley. I couldn’t agree more
Sounds interesting enough to keep in mind. I don’t have issues with Cruise.
The movie is based on a Japanese novel of the same title and plot. You could just read it….
Sounds like fun. I see a lot of the comments want a Zac Efron type kid in this role, but I think Cruise’s intensity works perfectly here.
Love Emily but she seems miscast.
It will be a mess but Doug will save it in post
Also reminds me of “The Forever War” by Joe Haldeman. What is sad is remembering Cruise in “All The Right Moves”, “Magnolia” and one I really admired, “The Lat Samurai”. Just seems doing yet another high-concept sci fi is predictable for someone like Tom. And I love Emilty Blunt, but as a special forces operative?
Emily Blunt would be great here. Have u seen Looper? She’s the sexiest woodchopper ever!
And, from what i read in reviews of the original book, Emily Blunt role – called Metal Bitch of War in the book – is actually the emotional core of the book. I remember reading somewhere at a scifi film web that this role is kinda make-or-break of the movie. So I”M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!
Plus, isnt it great that Emily seem to FINALLY have her breakthrough LEADING role? I’m not saying Prada – it put her on the map – but it supporting. Nearly 10 years has gone by, its time she deserve anne hathaway’s catwoman / scarlett’s black widow / … I think in terms of talent she up there with the top of her peer – anne / natalie / keira /… yet she still didnt get that BIG role of them
I am not a Tom Cruise fan at all, never have been but my favourite actor, the one young talented Actor I have always claimed will knock Cruise off his pedestal, Jonas Armstrong, is to appear in this movie so at least we’ll get to see HIM in Australia, in any case I will buy the DVD through Amazon.co.uk and that is the only reason, because Jonas has the ability of stealing the scenes of everything he has appeared in so far.
This film hasn’t been made yet, so I have no actual opinion on it, but in my opinion, it’s terrible! Or fantastic! Everyone is perfect! Or miscast!
How many sci fi flicks has Cruise done his entire lifetime?
This would be 4th-and it is unreleased as is his third one.
PLEASE CHANGE THAT TITLE!!!!!!!
It doesn’t even make sense.
It’s too dark for a broad audience.
Did I mention it doesn’t make sense?
I know someone will say “The title will make sense once you see the movie,” but that’s not the point. If you’re spending $200 million on a movie for a global audience, you want them to spread good word of mouth…and have it make sense…BEFORE they see the movie.
Word.
Sounds really cool – I’ll definitely watch it.
I agree that the title needs to be changed. Seriously.
That said, I’ve read 3 drafts of this, and the original Dante Harper draft was fantastic. They butchered it when Tom Cruise hopped on board, though – changing the protagonist to a grown man kinda destroyed the point of the story, in my opinion. However, the latest draft that I read (which I think is the shooting draft hopefully) fixed a lot of the problems that came with Cruise’s attachment, and I’m pretty happy with it. Can’t wait for this movie.
