Haven’t heard back from Sony, but sources say Shailene Woodley has the offer to play Mary Jane Watson in the Marc Webb-directed The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, and her deal will close soon, we’re told. It is a coup for an actress who just arrived on the motion picture map with Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. (On the TV side, her breakthrough ABC Family series The Secret Life Of The American Teenager will end after this season). In Spider-Man 2, set for a 3D release May 2, 2014, Woodley will play the role originated by Kirsten Dunst as Sony Pictures retraces the ground it covered in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Emma Stone played the character Gwen in the first film that starred Andrew Garfield as the webslinger.

She’s not exactly the next It Girl like Emma Stone. Likable but after we got stuck with Kirsten Dunst I was hoping for something more than ABC Family. And please don’t cite the over-rated The Descendants as some kind of resume qualifier. The character she’s set to potentially portray is a show stopper/model/love of Peter Parker’s life. She’s an average option.
Ugh – really? They couldn’t find someone more attractive or charismatic? She’s the same in every role she plays. I don’t get the fuss over her performance in “The Descendants” – she gave the same performance she always gives. But someone decided that shes the “it-girl”, so here we are. Reminds me of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, another middling former child actor who someone decided is an incredible performer.
Did you see MYSTERIOUS SKIN? Once you see that film then you will know he is the real thing (if you already didn’t from his other fine performances in 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, 50/50, INCEPTION and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES).
How is she the same in every role she plays? EVERY ROLE? Name three.
So Emma Stone must not be making it out of this one alive, obviously.
Shailene is a terrific casting choice. I wonder how she’ll mesh with Garfield who seemed too old off the bat — and the larger issue is, if they’re already bringing MJ back into the series, what was the point of ‘rebooting’ the franchise in the first place?
Will they NEVER cast a redhead as Mary Jane?

Honestly, I don’t think it really matters. This new reboot is forgettable and people will go out and see it but nobody will even talk about it 2 weeks later. I honestly don’t care.

Seems like a good choice. She definitely looks more like a high school student than Andrew or Emma, which might be a little odd, but she impressed in The Descendants and this is likely to be her next step to stardom. The only thing I hope is that this doesn’t necessarily mean that Gwen Stacy is going to be killed in the next movie. I loved Emma in that role and I’d hate to see goodbye to the character so soon.
Most awsome casting ever! Shailene was amazing in Descendants and is really going to bring a new energy and dynamic to the franchise.
Everyone commenting on her looks must be quite a looker themselves. She is very pretty and talented.
Shailene would be a fool to not accept the offer. However, ever since her sudden rise to fame in The Descendants, she has been extremely picky about the roles that she is playing. Furthermore, it seems that she is drawn towards the independent films as opposed to the mainstream studio films. She just wrapped, “The Spectacular Now” and has recently signed on to appear in “White Birds”. I feel that she would be interested in appearing in the film since Marc Webber has experience in directing independent films, so she would feel comfortable appearing in the film. The only reason for her not landing the role would be scheduling conflicts with the upcoming projects that she has signed on for as well as The Secret Life of the American Teenager’s final season.
I hope Shailene appears in the film. She is an extremely talented and versatile actress. Moreover, she proved her acting capability with her breakthrough performance in “The Descendants”. I know that she has a future in Hollywood and life after The Secret Life looks promising.
