Fox‘s new comedy The Mindy Project may have secured a supersized 24-episode order, but it is still very much a work in progress as the freshman has garnered critical praise but has yet to connect with wide audiences. Now the series is implementing creative changes midway through Season 1, which include the elimination of a character, played by regular Amanda Setton, and the downgrade of another one, played by Anna Camp, from regular to recurring. That means that for the time being creator/executive producer/star Mindy Kaling and Zoe Jarman (Betsy) will be the only female regulars on the medical comedy. According to TVLine, which broke the news, the move coincides with the show introducing a new recurring female character, Maggie, a tomboyish college friend of Mindy’s (Kaling).TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Mindy’s the only female regular? So much for a female-created, female-driven show.
Well, Mindy Kaling created the show and she’s still the protagonist – none of these moves changes that.
Mindy’s getting rid of the two really pretty girls on the show? So weird. I wonder why.
Yeah. It’s almost like Kaling’s having a nervous breakdown.
A lot of critics recommended Anna Camp’s role be expanded. So Kaling responds by demoting her? This reminds me (in a much smaller way) of Cybill Shepherd demanding that Christine Baranski be fired from CYBILL after Baranski won the Emmy.
If the drop Mindy Kaling then MAYBE I’ll watch it.
Mindy’s doing great, barely looks at the camera now.
After reading her book, it’s clear she’s so insecure that she would want to be the only female lead on the show. She’s probably convinced this is why her show isn’t working…as for those 2 actresses, you can only go up from here!
Her book definitely made me less of a fan. Her character on the show comes off as spoiled and really whiny, and not in a fun way. The audience can only take small doses of that manic blend of ego/insecurity. If she has as much talent as she keeps telling everyone she possesses, it should be so much better. I haven’t watched a full ep since the pilot, but I hope she can do better, since she’s got a full season order.
I thought that the actress that played Betsy on the show was a sreies regular too!
Mindy’s the problem with the show. It needs to get the axe.
The beginning of the end.
Less Anna Camp? Really?? I was just watching last week’s episode and realized how much more Anna needed to be in the show. Here’s hoping she can return to The Good Wife.
‘Critical praise’??! I am sorry, I must be living under a rock: What critical praise has the show received? From whom? The people who work on it? Mindy’s mom? Everyone I know thinks it is terrible. It IS terrible.
Wow. Lots of haters here… I’m surprised. I think this is one of the freshest comedies I’ve seen. Mindy has me hooked and I really hope the show makes it.
That’s because you’re being paid to think so, Dan. Explains the disconnect between you and everyone else here.
She has turned into a queen diva bitch and her show will be cancelled very soon. There’s no way they will do 24 episodes. More like 12 and then it’s goodbye Ms. Kaling. You let your ego swell out of control and now you are the stereotypical insecure egomaniac. It’s a shame because the pilot episode was really funny but after the next two I lost interest. I was rooting for you and wanted you to be a big hit. No longer. The sooner your show is pulled the better for everyone. Hopefully you will learn a valuable lesson from this failure. It’s a personal failure on your part in every way. This was your show and you have now killed it. Suicide by the creator by reason of temporary egomaniacal insanity.
Finally. A post from inside Kaling’s writers’ room.
Sooner it goes the better, deeply unfunny show
Critical praise from Fox. They did order 24 episodes
On a purely technical level, it would help if viewers could actually understand what the heck she is saying. Mindy speaks quickly, slurs her words and doesn’t enunciate. Very different dialogue delivery than on THE OFFICE. My wife has been watching and always has to engage the “closed captioning”. Love rapid=fire dialogue, like in in 30 ROCK, but this is ridiculous.
So now the only female on the show besides Mindy is the dorky one who comes close to having a speech impediment? Is it not obvious that Mindy felt threatened by Setton and Camp because they are better looking than she is?
…which hopefully means more Zoe Jarman (the Awkward Girl.) Love her!
More and more, this show is seeming like a vanity project. Of course, I should have been tipped off by the title, right?
Kaling is a funny, but not particularly attractive woman. And yet the show seems to pivot around how much guys want her. The subtext in any scene she has with an attractive guy is that they secretly want to sleep with her.
I can see why, given that, that an attractive woman in the cast wouldn’t stand a chance.
@Lillian Push
Bingo. According to source close to the show, that’s exactly why Kaling fired Setton and demoted Camp. The press-release nonsense about Camp “requesting” to be demoted is just that: nonsense.
Could not agree more. I think Mindy is terrific writer – but she is denial about her ever-increasing weight gain which makes it hard to watch when she is squeezed into tight fitting clothing in almost every scene! You made yourself the lead – lose weight to fit the part. And now you remove one of the funnier, more attractive, cast members??!
Keep on keeping on, Mindy.
Mindy is top 5 funniest people I’ve ever met.
And the show is one of the only surprising comedies on network. The joke cadence is different, you have to pay attention…
It takes shows a while before they find their footing and that includes seeing how the chemistry is with the cast.
By your reasoning, was mindy not threatened by Anna camp when she cast her in the pilot, but got increasingly threatened later? That makes sense.
And I’m not being paid. And I’m not related to her.
Mindy can write brilliant hilarious scenes and the show should be a success. Here is the best episode they’ve done so far it’s really excellent. http://www.fox.com/the-mindy-project/full-episodes/1409091851/hiring-and-firing
The show deserves to find its niche audience. She is a unique voice she’s always funny and her writing is fresh and inventive. Watch the hiring and firing episode and you’ll see how great this show can be.
I totally agree with Anon here. The Hiring & Firing episode was HILARIOUS! When she got punched in the face? Hilarious. When Morgan stepped in to help her with her broken nose? Hilarious! I wish Mindy luck in this project and in her career. I don’t know why. She doesn’t seem very personable or naturally friendly if you ever met her in person (just my opinion) but for some reason I wish her all the best!
And I think the show is pretty funny! It’s off beat and weird but it’s funny. I like that it’s set in NYC too.
Shame. Love Amanda. She kills with the guidette role on Mindy and when she was on Mercy!! Hope good things are in store for her… Good timing for pilot season.
Trying to get the appeal of Kaling. I watched one half of one episode. I don’t find her attractive or funny. She’s obviously influenced by Tina Fey. I guess it’s in FOX’s best interest to nurture the show as a “New Girl” companion. Oh well.
Camp asked for the demotion because she was barely used on the show. It makes sense.
This is my new favorite show and just got ruined. I was hoping for this show to go for 2 years. Kaling needs to get ger act together. Demoting 2 actresses for her own insecurity is absolutely idiotic.
