EXCLUSIVE: ABC Family has teamed with producer Joel Silver to develop I Hunt Killers, a drama series based on Barry Lyga‘s young-adult novel. The project, from Silver Pictures and Warner Horizon, centers on the teenage daughter of an imprisoned notorious serial killer, a likable girl who becomes a suspect after a string of copy-cat murders. (In the book, the teen is a boy). It will be written by Dexter scribe Arika Mittman, which is appropriate as I Hunt Killers has a similar feel, but with a teenage twist. Silver executive produces, with Mittman serving as co-executive producer and Lyga as consultant.
I Hunt Killers was published by Little Brown this past spring (watch the book’s trailer below), with a sequel, Game, set to come out next spring. The book was brought to Silver by the company’s feature department, and the project was set up at Warner Bros where Silver was under a deal. ABC Family has had success with series adaptations of young-adult novels, including flagship drama Pretty Little Liars, also produced by Warner Horizon. On the TV side, Silver has had most success with a show with a teenage girl at the center, UPN’s Veronica Mars. Mittman is repped by WME and manager Todd Feldman.

What is with abcfamily getting shows they’re picking up are so dark, twisted and depressing?Socio about a boy suspected of murder ,I hunt Killer about the son a imprisoned serial killer suspected In copycat murders, Terminales about a young woman finding out she has a terminal illness.PLL is a little dark, but these are way more disturbing.
Seriously. Enough with the killers stuff. No one’s watching this channel for that.
ABC Family is clealy missing the point of Hunger Games; Katniss kills in defence, she’s a heroine, not a blood thirsty killer. ABC Family trying to do Dexter is just sad.
Abc family does seem to be getting darker in terms of programs lately. What “family” are they supposedly programming for? The Manson Family perhaps?
Before you say who they are programming for, read the book. It is a good book. This is not for the Manson Family. If you read the book, you find that what you think you will read, but rather a story of a boy just trying to live and cope with what, in this story’s case, his father had done to him when he was young. In the end it is just what many people have to do with their life, just put to the more dramatic incident.
Aw, it’s Harrison, all grown up, well nearly…
Really enjoyed this book. My niece left it at my house and I thought I’d read just a few pages… Bam! I was hooked! Didn’t realize there was definitely a sequel coming. Could make a very good series.
So glad this isn’t about little stuck up teenage hussies…
I want “family” back in ABC FAMILY. I want real stories. Compelling drama. I want serial killers. And a bowl of count chocula.
Although I have to admit abc family seems like a strange place for this show.Being a fan I have to say how excited I am about it,especially since joel silvers involvement. Btw to the haters please read the book before you comment. It’s not what you think and even though it has the feel of dexter it’s not, Jasper is no harrison.
Dexter is already a stretch. I find it hard to believe a teenager with no ties to law enforcement could track and kill other serial killers.
He doesn’t track and kill other serial killers. He just helps catch them.
More like ABC Manson Family Channel…
This show seems way to dark for ABC Family, would be better suited for another cable outlet!!!
This sounds too much like Socio. ABC Family will have to pick up one or the other but not both.
I actually like that ABCFAMILY is going a little darker with there current pilots. Even if the material is darker its not like its going to be graphic.
I have been an admirer of Arika Mittman’s career for years. She is such a talented writer and an incredible asset to this project. I can’t wait to see this concept come to life in her hands. ABC family scored big here with this writer.
Arika is a star. She’ll knock this one out of the park. Project could very well a lot of new eyeballs to ABCF.
when I read this I thought it would make a great TV show. i hope it doesn’t disappoint.
People please this book is awesome and this is the most exciting news i heard all month, don’t hate read the book and then talk. omg this is awesome i really do hope this becomes a show, but i would really love it if it was a boy not a girl like in the book i fell in love with jasper and his cunning smile.
ABC Family has a lot of pilots in the works. At first I thought The Fosters and Socio would be surefire pick ups but now I’m not so sure. Unless they are planning on cancelling Bunheads and The Lying Game, is there even enough room for all these shows?
Um are they changing the character into a girl? I read the book I hope the tv show is accurate
The book is very good and well-written. It’s quite poignant. I wish the TV show would stick to using a boy main character as in the novel and not change it to a girl. A girl in that type of role seems kind of lame and unrealistic.
i must say i enjoyed the book i actually see a tv series better then a movie for it but i wish it was a boy like in the book im not sexsist but it doesnt feel right. i hunt killer is like dexter and criminial minds put together, it shows the world of serial killers and sociapaths and the protagonist has dark urges but unlike dexter must control them. read the book its good and abc family need to change it from a girl to a guy. again not sexsist just doesnt feel right.
Love this book series and was seriously excited to see it would be a tv show, but now I am incredibly disappointed. The gender change of the main character is a bad move. I doubt I will watch it now that I know they plan on doing that.
I don’t get why they have to make Jazz’s character in the show, female. All the shows on ABC Family revolve around female main characters. Only one has a male main character and that’s Baby Daddy. Can’t wait for the show to come out though.
