Whew! Disney Channel has closed deals with Boy Meets World stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel to reprise their roles on the channel’s potential sequel series Girl Meets World, pushing the project closer to a pilot greenlight. Disney Channel had been in talks with the two when word of the project leaked early this month. The news caught fire online, displaying huge interest in the project and giving the two actors and their reps ammunition in their negotiations with Disney. But all ended well and Savage and Fishel are now officially attached, as first reported by TVLine. Girl Meets World hails from Michael Jacobs, co-creator/executive producer of the original series, which ran on ABC for seven seasons. It centers on the preteen daughter of Cory (Savage) and Topanga (Fishel), who married on the original series, and tells the story from her point of view. Search is now underway for an actress to play the daughter. With her on board, the project is expected to get a formal pilot order.

This news gives me massive amounts of guilty pleasure! Always loved the original series in spite of knowing it was not classic television. I certainly hope Rider Strong and Will Freidle will at least pop up on a recurring basis. And of course Mr. Feeney himself William Daniels MUST visit!
Could any of this be more pathetic?
Why Ed? People cannot be happy about this? Maybe you are the pathetic one.
Chillax bro.
It’s not that pathetic for the parents who grew up watching this show. Especially for those who feel that there is not many kid-friendly options these days.
How on EARTH did they convince Savage and Fishel to return to TV???? Can’t imagine they went above 9.5k an EP.
They should totally cast Beatrice Miller from X-factor as the daughter!
That’s totally not a bad idea. That girl seems so likable and could pass as their kid. Casting directors take note!
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Just looking at pictures and I think she resembles a young Danielle Fisher enough to really make it work
yes! beatrice has cory’s face and topanga’s hair! she’s witty and 13 years old. just the girl they are looking for.
OMG! when I heard/read about this project a week or so ago I was excited but said “no way they’d come back” but now they’re attached? I’m beyond exited about this! I hope they get the greenlight and get this on my TV ASAP! I hope they hired some good writers..DisneyCH lacks in that dept.
Of course they are coming back – what else do they have to do? We’re not exactly talking Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie here.
Dude, I hate comments like yours. You don’t know what these people are up to. Just because you don’t see them on weekly series television doesn’t mean they aren’t doing anything. So hush your face.
Oh come on, both Good Luck Charlie and Shake It Up are well written enough for adults to be able to watch with their children without cringing.
Must. Buy. TV.
Good, but this should much rather be on ABC Family than Disney Channel.
Now that Ben and Danielle are on board its only a matter of time before it’s picked up to series. This is going to be huge for the Disney Channel.
I watched BMW just to see the sexy handsome William Russ. He’s still hot, sure hope he returns as the grandpa.
*Neighbor. Not grandpa. But nice agist comment.
Ah wait — RUSS, not DANIELS. My bad.
Now predicting the inevitable spin-off of the spin-off: Baby Meets World.
FINALLY.
If I was a Make a Wish Foundation kid, this would have been my one wish.
Whomever came up with this idea, very smart. I work at a broadcast network and I can’t believe how much press this show is getting even before getting a pilot order. If this thing hits, it will be a huge coup for Disney Channel. I hope they did their homework, because if they mess with the tone of the show, it will not only alienate older fans, but it will also fail with its new audience.
Sorry — which tone? The seasons 1 and 2 tone? Or the 3 through the end tone? That’s right — you’re advising the spinoff to not mess with the tone when THE SHOW ITSELF DIDN’T EVEN HAVE A CONSISTENT TONE!
This needs to be on ABC and NOT Disney.
My guess is that the original fan base was around 10-15 years old when they watched the series (I was 11 when it began, stopped watching when I started HS).
Now, the same fans are around at that sweet spot demo (30-35 years old with families of their own), and this would be the PERFECT show to follow Modern Family. The subject matter — young adults raising a family — doesn’t really seem to be an appealing subject matter to 10-12 year olds; hell, even that Nickelodeon show, “Fifteen,” felt too “old” for me when I was 11.
Most of the would-be Disney watchers of Girl Meets World literally weren’t even born when Boy Meets World ended its original run — what’s the point of targeting them with a sequel series?
I agree it should be on ABC, not Disney Channel, but I’ll take it however I can get it haha. But I don’t think it would be good after Modern Family at all — Two very different tones. It should be on the new TGIF if Last Man Standing and Malibu Country can get a steady audience going and ABC decides to expand it to two hours again.
1) If it can’t stand alone as a non-spinoff, then it won’t work anyway. 2) BMW reran on Disney (and now ABC Fam — to this day) for years. Kids know what it is. 3) This isn’t how this stuff works. Disney Channel DEVELOPED this show; they didn’t acquire it.
I feel like this isn’t the only 80s/90s sitcom that will return with a sequel series.
How about a “Full House” sequel called “Full Townhouse” – Recently divorced Stephanie moves in with DJ’s family (it can be successful on ABC Family since Brady Brides didn’t work on NBC). Depending on how Girl Meets World explains the absence of other key cast members, this series could do the same and the Olsen Twins could easily be written out of the story. I see Kimmy Gibbler living next door and a “very special episode” where Danny and Joey finally get married.
Hey, If Candace Cameron Bure doesn’t sign on, we can bet that Jodie Sweetin will definitely be chomping at the bit. Her boob job easily paves the way for “Full Blouse,” a dramedy where Stephanie is a housewife slash stripper.
Somewhere out there, Jaleel White and Bronson Pinchot are anxiously sitting by their sneaker phones awaiting a phone call.
