CBS‘ Beverly Hills Cop reboot has gotten another step closer to a formal greenlight, with actor-comedian Brandon T. Jackson closing a deal for the lead. The films’ star Eddie Murphy and The Shield creator Shawn Ryan executive produce the Sony TV-produced project, which already has a pilot production commitment. Its pilot order is considered a formality once the script written by Ryan is delivered.
Ryan serves as showrunner on the show, a sequel to the three movies that chronicled the exploits of wise-cracking Detroit detective Axel Foley (Murphy) in Los Angeles. The series centers on Axel’s blue-collar police officer son, Aaron (Jackson), who helps take down the criminal elements of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills while trying to escape the shadow of his larger-than-life father. Murphy will reprise his role as Axel in the pilot and may recur if the pilot goes to series.
I hear Murphy suggested Jackson. Murphy is said to be a fan of the young actor and his stand-up. (Murphy too came out of a stand-up background before taking on the Axel role). CBS was immediately on board as the network had already spotted Jackson, casting him in his only previous starring TV role — as the male lead opposite Minnie Driver in the 2011 pilot Hail Mary. Jackson is probably best known for his breakout part in the movie Tropic Thunder.

Yesssssss! Excellent casting!!!
Saw this casting coming the moment I read the character description. Good choice.
Ummm, why is dis happenin’ again?
im pretty sure everyone saw this casting coming
Congrats to B-Jackson! Super talented dude! CBS has a winner!!
All together now….CAST JUDGE REINHOLD!
I second this!
Please bring back Judge Reinhold as the Lt. Or he can even have a recurring role as a retired cop moonlighting as a private investigator.
He’s a really charismatic young actor. I think this will work.
Really lame idea for a show. When have the kid of or replacements of stories ever been a success? Never maybe?
For the record, the networks were in a bidding war over this series so there must be something good about it.
Absolutely not. You realize they haven’t even read the script yet, right?
Just because networks clamour over themselves… you’d be surprised by the amount of stuff on TV and FILM that people bid for only to cry-over later.
Great choice, in the past I might have picked RonReaco Lee, but he seems a bit old for the part now. Plus, he has that gig over at BET. Poor dude, wasting his talent away. Hopefully he gets a role afterwords on a good show.
Congrats to BTJ, and here’s to hoping that this pilot goes forward.
I ABSOLUTELY agree with you with RonReaco Lee. He’s truly a talented guy, and I believe way more talented that BTJ. We’ll see how this turns out.
The only idea worse than this was Beverly Hills Cop III
I disagree. There has never been a worse idea than Beverly Hills Cop III.
So then you agree…
Obvious CBS plants are obvious
Redundant Rick post is redundant.
@ggny How can everyone see this coming when I have no idea who the hell Brandon is? I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Can’t wait to miss it.
What happened to Shawn Ryan… Vince Gilligan has taken his thrown and burned it to the ground.
“thrown?”
“his thrown”? Hilarious.
You got me, chubbs.
Too much bad TV. Not enough skewl-in.
Shawn Ryan is behind this? I’m in!
Yet another show to tank. Either do another Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy or leave it alone.
In the “One season wonder” Department…
Bring back Sgt. Taggart and Billy Rosewood (even if the characters are retired)!
Really, really excited for this! Congrats Brandon!
About time CBS added a little color to its network. Shawn Ryan is the perfect bald guy to bring in the flava. I hope Eddie Murphy plays an active role in producing this series. Eddie doesn’t even have to be on scene. Don’t forget to watch the tribute to Eddie Murphy tonight on the SPIKE Channel.
Great casting and good move by CBS.
Very good choice
He was the best choice
Great idea! All the fans of Eddie Murphy would love to see him on TV from time to time. The show would be about Axel’s son as an officer working in Beverly Hills but the movie was about a Detroit officer solving a case in Beverly Hills. The son would get a lot of his street smarts from the teachings of his dad.
