Huell Howser, whose California Gold series has aired for 19 years over public television, has decided to step away from the camera and and hang up his microphone. The Tennessee native “is retiring from making new shows but does not want to make any formal announcements,” according to an email Howser production company associate Ryan Morris sent to the Sacramento Bee. During his video visits all over California, Howser is known for his unpretentious wide-eyed interest expressed with a Southern drawl — “Wow! That’s amazing!” The Marine Corps vet began his career in Nashville on commercial television. After stints in New York City and Los Angeles, Howser joined public TV station KCET in Los Angeles. “The show will continue to air in reruns for awhile” on public TV stations around the state, Morris emailed the L.A. Times. “We have been gradually winding down all year but Huell has decided to stop, come December 31st.” Concerning rumors about the 67-year-old Howser’s health, Morris added: “While Huell does not always tell me everything, he seems to be doing fine. He is just trying to get away from television and enjoy some free time.”

I hate to see him go, but he’s earned it.
It was all about the subjects, but it was the way they were
presented that was the best: “now were not here to talk about
building”, “don’t give it away” with the menudo and all !
So you’re saying the Tennessee native is retiring from making new shows but does not want to make any formal announcements? Wow! That’s amazing!
thanks for all the years Huell!!!!… LOVED every minute of it!!!!
OH MAN that sucks
Huell is Legend here in SO CAL
I remember him on KCET doing VIDEOLOG back in da day
Great broadcaster, thanks for all the joy you brought to TV!
We will miss Huell–although a native Tennessean, through his travelogue shows, had an in depth knowledge of California far greater than most natives. His shows of different varieties were genuine and informative. He has a great sense of optimism and a natural curiousity that made every show something special. He taught us California history without a textbook, using the places and peoiple he visited as his classroom. I wish him the best of everything as he retires. We will always be grateful for his contributions to our modern state history and for showing us “California’s Gold”. Good Luck, Huell. Miss you already.
Aaaw… Even my kid loves Huell, as “The Baxson” in Disney’s Winnie The Pooh. He parodies himself and the whole “Wow. That’s Amazing!” thing after the credits. Love him!!!
He’s definitely one of a kind.
I love the way he would repeat the last line someone’s comment to begin his next question with this kind of Forest Gumpian amazement. I ofter wondered if Tom was inspired by Huell in how he did that role.
if you watched Huell you know what I’m saying.
Love Huell, I am really going to miss seeing him do his thing. He was always so kind and generous to his interviewees, and let the show be about them, not him. A rare thing these days.
Thanks for your many years of a-mazing shows, Huell!
That’s more amazing than an avocado eating dog. (Check youtube.)
Coming from Germany – having lived in Connecticut a while and than
Palm Springs/CA – I am a total California lover, and Huell certainly
made a huge impression on me – even tried some of the places he
featured.
Also had the fortune meeting him in a small night Club – Moody’s -
here in Palm Springs – in the 80′s ! That was before he became Famous !!!
Like a lot of other people, I will miss his Personality and Imagination very much
and wish him everything wonderful.
Thanks and Danke !!!!
I really going to miss Huell. I’ve loved his show since the Videolog days. Thank you Mr. Howser for so many years your special brand of always positive, always interesting, and, yes, Amazing television.
We, my friend judy, love Huell! He called me on my birthday in 2008 and he was AMAZING!!! We will miss him dearly! Good luck and hope to see you in PalmSprings
An absolute TV icon. Enjoyed his shows for many years. Each week my cousin (since passed) would see his show and call to plan a visit for us to his latest local discovery. Many great memories. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a KCET fund raiser at the old Bullocks Wilshire. Very gracious and personable. After a short conversation I asked if I could have a photo taken with him. He suggested a backdrop inside by the elevators that showed the extensive marble decor. Of course as soon as the picture was taken he was swamped by others who wished to get a photo with him. Not turning anyone away he seemed very happy to do so. Enjoy your retirement Hewell, you have certainly earned it.
I have planned many a motorcycle roadtrip from shows I have watched Huell do! At my club meetings I often start a conversation about a future roadtrip with, “Huell went to…” I’ll miss watching California’s Gold!
Hate to see you go! There will never be anyone who will be able to
replace your great personality. Your show was definitely one of a
kind. You always seemed kind of like a personal friend. I learned
a lot about out of the way places in California from watching
the show.
We will miss you forever since today January 7th you called it a great life here on earth. My dad loved your shows and never missed one. Rest in Peace great soul you were such a wonderful person.
Huell was old school at its finest. A man who found the joy beauty and irony in life. He was an absolute gold mine when I discovered him on PBS. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
Thank you for everything Huell. You will be remembered!
