Cinderella could soon have a new evil stepmother – played by Cate Blanchett. The Oscar-winning actress is in deep talks to join Disney’s live action retelling of the glass slipper classic tale, Deadline has confirmed. Blanchett would be playing the Lady Tremaine role of the wicked stepmother in the Mark Romanek-directed film. She would be the first thespian to join the project. The Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna sold the pitch to Disney for seven figures back in 2010. Chris Weitz has written the script. Simon Kinberg, who could be joining Disney’s new Star Wars movies, will produce. Blanchett, who will be seen in the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, recently joined Skyfall‘s Daniel Craig, Bill Murray and The Artist’s Jean Dujardin in the George Clooney-directed The Monuments Men. Blanchett is repped by CAA.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Best actor on the planet, male or female. Daniel Day is up there too but you don’t have to put up w/ the method stuff.
Yep, the best. Crystal Skull sucked but nobody came out of that smelling of roses. Karen Allen perhaps.
The good thing is it’s not a musical, which would mean ilk like aged chris montan will thankfully not be involved.
Is Romanek still doing the next Dan Brown film?
So now that both Snow Whites were disasters, do they still not realize these public domain/classic fairy tale movies aren’t what the market is looking for? The one that kicked it all off was Alice and Wonderland and that was a hit because Johnny Depp was playing Captain Jack Sparrow, not the subject matter. What’s the point of going through all the effort for a project that if everything hits perfectly has minor success upside, and more likely will end up a push or in the red?
Disagree. Fairy tale stories aren’t a sure thing, but they remain big business. Look at Once Upon a Time on ABC. Not a very good show, but a very solid player.
I think there’s still room for a few big Disney fairy tale movies to break out.
Snow White and the Huntsman made nearly $400m worldwide. That’s a disaster?
Somebody shake my memory, but didn’t Julia Roberts do this character last year?
Roberts played Snow White’s evil stepmother.
Emma Stone for Cinderella please!
She’s also in the new Woody Allen movie.
I haven’t read the script, so I could be wrong, but this seems pretty boring. The problem with this low hanging fruit is that there is nothing clever about the approach apart from it being live action. Both Snow White’s got it wrong with their bone-headed approaches and this seems like a simple retelling. At least Maleficent seems to have something unique going for it–a different point of view. x
So Aline Brosh McKenna sold a pitch for two million dollars based on Cinderella, a disney character they own, and didn’t write the script. Nice pay day.
Cinderella is a public domain character.
Delicious. More reason to root for the evil stepmother over that perfect little pill Cinderella.
She has the two evil stepsisters remember? So isn’t that aging her a bit? Although I like Romanek…he’s a cool choice.
Yay, more public domain fairy tale shit.
