I have learned that CBS has decided not to give a back order to new comedy Partners. The show will be pulled from the schedule immediately, with comedy repeats airing in the Monday 8:30 PM slot for the time being. The news comes on the heels of Partners hitting a series low (1.8 18-49 rating) on Monday while the rest of the CBS Monday series were up or steady. Partners, starring David Krumholtz and Michael Urie, has been the weakest link in CBS’ Monday lineup, disrupting the comedy flow and likely hurting new 9 PM tentpole 2 Broke Girls, for which it served as a lead-in. (UPDATE: CBS has released scheduling info for next Monday, with a Two And A Half Men repeat set to air at 8:30 PM. This marks the veteran comedy’s symbolic return to Mondays, where it aired for nine seasons before relocating to Thursdays this fall.)
Even with the series-low 1.8 rating, Partners this week was on par or higher than all new fall comedies on other networks that have received back orders except NBC’s Go On (2.2). But for CBS comedy standards, it fell short.
Partners, from David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, was the only new comedy CBS introduced this fall. The network has Friend Me on tap for midseason. CBS would not comment on the situation, but veteran Rules Of Engagement will likely be summoned in to bridge the gap until Friend Me comes on. Of its fall freshman class, CBS has given dramas Elementary and Vegas full-season orders, while Made In Jersey and Partners have been cancelled.

Said yearly: One. Trick. Pony.
GOOD that show SUCKS !
SAME HERE!!! Who needs it???? Partners sucked you know what!
One of the better written half hours out there and was really finding its stride. Wish they’d have given it more time, tried another time slot…
I’d been enjoying it as well.
Daniel and Larry, you need to use your time more wisely.
Mom, you need to pull your head out of your a$$.
This was actually one of the best new sitcoms of the year. I hope it lands on its feet again at an intelligent network.
Best?? No way!
Numbers, Ugly Betty, Even the Superman movie.
Excellent – good – and fair.
But the talent from these three just didn’t jell in “Partners”.
Michael Urie played the same character as in Ugly Betty, except it was too over the top for “Partners”. Tone him down and give more personality to Routh and the show still wouldn’t appeal to CBS’s core audience.
All of the actors just seemed uncomfortable in this show.
Krumholtz could never pull Brooke Davis.
When I read this I didnt even realise you said Brooke Davis because it seems so natural to call her that. Unfortunately I think that Character will fallow her for years and years to come! I love her though! While the show was not bad, it wasnt great like I had hoped. I was really excited to see her back on TV again.
I’ve never understood CBS’ treatment of Rules of Engagement. It’s a funny show that delivers solid ratings no matter where it’s located, and it fits perfectly with the other comedies on the network. I’m glad it was renewed for this season, and I’m looking forward to seeing it back on TV. It’s an immeasurably better show than Partners.
You must work for Sony TV…while it is a better show than this trainwreck was, Rules is the McDonald’s of TV shows- bland, uninspired, and unimpressive. Ratings have always been okay, but not great by CBS standards. I actually find it depressing that this show is still around while promising new shows like The Goodwin Games get screwed before they’ve had a chance. Network TV has become a cesspool of mediocrity, save for a few shows.
Wow, your taste in shows is clearly superior – what an impressive being you must be.
After CBS almost KILL 2BG they cancel it now? So slow, so bad decision making. AT least if not POI give 2BG post SB slot.
Offensive premise, horrible cast, terrible show.
Good riddance to a show that never belonged on CBS to begin with.
Offensive premise, horrible cast, terrible show.
Sounds like a CBS show to me!
Someone’s obviously not been watching The Good Wife!
That being said, I’m disappointed to see Partners go. It wasn’t half as funny as Will & Grace back in the day, but I did enjoy it while it lasted and there are worse shows that deserved to go first IMHO.
I really enjoyed the series and it was getting better and better as the episodes went on and the writers were learning each of the characters. Better luck to the cast next year!
Finally the Monday night bleeding will stop. It was unlikable in every way, starting with a couple of actors who should never have been cast in ANY sitcom.
Max has the worst taste in casting. People, just because they were on another show doesnt mean that they are good and that people will be more inclined to watch them. Networks, casting, and Producers are just lazy. There is real talent out there. Find them!!!!!
If you didn’t like the show change the channel, and let the fans watch it in peace.
I like Urie and Krumholtz, and they deserve better than this show, which felt like it belonged in the 70′s.
Sheila, I concur about Urie & Krumholtz . They actually have acting talent and comedic chops.
This was a very offensive, unoriginal show. It was a complete ripoff of the 1995 series called Partners. The show took a really solid cast, and gave them the worst writing. Kohan and Mutchnick are morons. They had one hit show, which wasn’t even all that great, and now think they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. They’re other shows never cease to fail.
Jesus, why do writers for a canceled show always write comments on Deadline as if they are a ‘big fan’ who thinks the network made a big mistake?
1. We know you are staff for the show.
2. Zero TV shows have been saved by comments on Deadline’s comments section.
3. See #1.
This was a terrible show that portrayed gay people in the most stereotypical, offensive way. I look to ‘Happy Endings’ and ‘Modern Family’ for good representatives. Especially ‘Happy Endings’, which gets no press for being the first to portray a normal, ordinary gay guy.
Love Happy Endings, but not sure Max can be described as ordinary! But as a gay character, you are absolutely right – it’s nice to see Max portrayed as anything but the same stereotype that’s been perpetrated on network comedies for years.
Wait… because someone said they liked the show they must be a plant? You know when people say “nobody likes it” that’s an expression, right?
You this this show was stereotypical? Put it up against The New Normal and this show was ANYTHING BUT.
I agree, the show was offensive, as is “The New Normal”. Both of these shows fall prey to sociopathic homosexual stereotype.
Such a shame. Very funny show. Just kept getting better and better. Too bad the ratings didn’t reflect that. Cast was terrific. Should try to move to another network.
Gosh what a surprise. Why did they ever put this on CBS in the first place? Wrong network for it but even if it aired on NBC it would still be the same shallow insipid artificial humor. They should retire with all their Will and Grace money. They don’t have any other shows within them that are worth watching. They got very lucky with Will and Grace everything else they’ve ever done has been a failure.
Now… let’s see something that’s new, not part of the Modern Family ‘trend’ of trying to capture the lucrative gay market.
I think Michael Urie is a terrific comedy actor, but the cast just didn’t gel. Add to that the poor writing and desperate direction, and the show just wasn’t very good.
How many of these comments are from the bitter and jealous Jeff Greenstein? @blue439 on Twitter.
He wants to be them but isn’t even that caliber of a writer.
cbs — call wb. they have a show called ‘oh f#$% it’s you’ written by malins/berlanti in the can that’s just been waiting in the wings, but play it cool when they tell you ‘oh f#$% i told you’
Hallelujah! Thieves never prosper
Does anyone know how many episodes were shot before the cancellation?
they shot #12 last night. it was very funny.
I knew it was going to be canceled sooner or later but still I’d like to see remaining episodes. When can I expect to see them, Saturday maybe?
These probably won’t see the light of day until Warner Brothers gets around to releasing them through their Archive MOD DVD collection.
I enjoyed the show somewhat in the beginning, but then the enjoyment was tainted with Sophia Bush’s big, rude mouth during the election & I deleted it off my DVR. I wish actors would learn we like to see them act as characters and don’t appreciate their personal political opinions being shoved in our faces? There is a classy way to support your candidate and Sophia did not exhibit a bit of it.
you’re right, nic. actors should behave exactly as we the viewers prefer they do, and should cater to our needs, feelings, and wants. why they decide to tune us out is beyond me. i, too, had her opinions shoved in my face — i just wish i had some kind of mouse to scroll or click away. it’s the worst!
I wish actresses would just shut up and look pretty. Hmph. Women shouldn’t be allowed to have opinions anyways.
(eyeroll)
How dare real life people interfere with your enjoyment of fictional characters! The temerity!
Oh this sucks. It was one of my favorite new shows. Too bad about the ratings.
I guess we could see this coming – CBS has other shows on the bench ready to go, and Rules of Engagement needs to get back onto the schedule. Friend Me is ready to go as well in the Spring – no space. CBS gave Partners time – it just wasn’t working out. Too bad – I’ll miss the show.
There may be one silver lining here – it’s small, but it is something. When a show gets canceled early [no back-9] in the season [prior to Feb-March], it gives the actors a chance to find other work when the pilot season hits full stride in the late winter/early spring.
I’ll be watching the pilot rosters closely in Feb/March – I’m hoping to see Sophia Bush somewhere in one of those pilots. I thought she was pretty good in Tree Hill, but she showed some potential star power [albeit never fully realized] in Partners, and I think another series is coming her way soon. All the best to you Sophia – you are going places!
