EXCLUSIVE: CBS is looking to further expand its NCIS franchise with another spinoff. The untitled project, written/executive produced by NCIS and NCIS: LA executive producer Shane Brennan, is a planted spinoff from NCIS: LA, which Brennan created and serves as showrunner on. It will feature new characters who will be introduced in two-part episode of NCIS: LA later this season. The proposed spinoff, produced by CBS TV Studios, will follow a small mobile team of agents, who are forced to live and work together, as they crisscross the country solving crimes.
Both NCIS: LA and its mothership series, juggernaut NCIS, originated as planted spinoffs, as two-part episodes of JAG and NCIS, respectively. In using NCIS: LA as a launchpad for the new spinoff, CBS is taking a page from the playbook of the long-running CSI franchise, in which the third series, CSI: NY, also started off as a planted spinoff from spinoff CSI: Miami.
Now in its 10th season, NCIS continues to be one of the biggest scripted series on television. Airing behind it, NCIS: LA, now in its fourth season, has been a solid ratings performer and commands one of the highest off-network syndication license fees for a drama series. (It is the subject of ongoing litigation by NCIS creator Don Bellisario.)
The NCIS franchise is currently the strongest on TV, with its ratings eclipsing those of the two remaining CSI series as well as the lone Law & Order drama, SVU. CBS has been pretty successful building procedural franchises with CSI and the NCIS. Its only recent miss was the Criminal Minds spinoff.
Brennan joined NCIS at the beginning of Season 4 in 2006 and was tapped as showrunner the following season. He ran both the mothership series and NCIS: LA for the spinoff’s first two seasons before focusing on NCIS: LA last year. This marks the second pilot for Paradigm-repped Brennan, who also has King & Maxwell at TNT, also produced by CBS TV Studios where Brennan is under an overall deal.

Love this show. How about calling it NCIS, Fresno, or NCIS Long Beach? Can’t get enough of this show. How about NCIS San Francisco and they could add in a whole gay section? Maybe not.
This is a brilliant idea! A spin-off of a spin-off that’s cousin to other spin-offs of a spin-off.
And they say Hollywood is out of original ideas.
Ok…THAT was funny!
Now that is very funny I could not even add my comments cause I was laughing so hard!!
I love it. Just make sure your level of writers is as good as these.
It’s like Inception, a spin-off within a spin-off…
JAG >> NCIS >> NCIS: LA >> UNTITLED New Show
I’m being a total TV nerd here… there are only very few instances where a TV show has spawned a spinoff of a spinoff.
One was “All in the Family,” which actually did it THREE times
All in the Family >> Maude >> Good Times
All in the Family >> The Jeffersons >> Checking In
All in the Family >> Archie Bunker’s Place >> Gloria
Then there’s Golden Girls >> Empty Nest >> Nurses
As well as CSI >> CSI: Miami >> CSI: NY
Can anyone think of any others?
JAG attempted a spinoff before NCIS but CBS didn’t buy it.
Also…
Baywatch >> Baywatch Nights
Baywatch >> Baywatch Hawaii
Tracey Ullman show >> The Simpsons
Jake & the Fatman >> Diagnosis Murder
Love American Style >> Happy Days >> Laverne & Shirley
Happy Days >> Joanie Loves Chachi
Dragnet >> Adam-12
Mary Tyler Moore >> Phylis
Mary Tyler Moore >> Rhoda
Diff’rent Strokes >> Facts of Life
Cosby Show >> Different World
laverne & Shirley gave us (however briefly) Lenny & Squiggy
Happy Days >>> Mork and Mindy
Three’s Company >>> Three’s a Crowd
Starsky & Hutch >>> Miami Vice LOL
And don’t forget Laverne & Shirley >> Mork and Mindy
CBS is not alone in the cloning here…
Law & Order>>L&O: Criminal Intent>>L&O: Special Victims Unit>>L&O: L.A.
There was also a first-run “reality” series version called “Law & Order: Trial By Jury.”
That’s five versions of the series, although it does not diminish the star quality of the original cast members like Steven Hill and Michael Moriarity, among others. “L&O” series creator and exec producer Dick Wolf has done quite, quite well for himself financially…at the cost and sacrifice of MANY other drama creator-producers in the TV industry! ;-D
Trial by jury was a scripted series that starred L&O’s Jerry orback & Cheers Bebe Neuwirth
Before the SCRIPTED version, there was a “reality” version. Wolf re-used the name.
And L&O > L&O: UK (not a direct spinoff)
L&O: U.K. was a crap show.
No real original scripts. The first (and only I think) season were scripts pulled from the original L&O show’s first 10 yrs.
Once I figured this formula out by ep. 3, I quit watching it.
Cheyenne>Bronco and Sugarfoot
Trackdown>Wanted Dead or Alive
The Rifleman>western with Michael Ansara playing an Indian Marshal
Danny Thomas Show/Make Room for Daddy > Andy Griffith Show > Gomer Pyle. The winner would have to be:
Love American Style > Happy Days > Laverne And Shirley AND Mork And Mindy AND Joanie Loves Chachi AND Blansky’s Beauties AND Out of the Blue
Good with us
NCIS: SHARK JUMPERS INC. NCIS: BREAKING BAD 24/7 NCIS: GILLIGAN’S ISLAND NCIS: HAWAII FIVE OH NCIS: LAW AND ORDER JAG NCIS: POLICE ACADEMY NCIS: THE MUNSTERS NCIS: WILD WILD WEST NCIS: JOE BIDEN, P.I.
NCIS: BAYWATCH NIGHTS NCIS: UNDERCOVER JAG NCIS: JURASSIC COPS NCIS: VAMPIRE SLAYERS NCIS: PRETTY LITTLE LESBOS NCIS: WAGON TRAIN TO THE STARS NCIS: CARIBBEAN PIRATES INC. NCIS: CELEBRITY CIRCUS OF STARS
NCIS: DONALD TRUMP INVESTIGATES NCIS: THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN
As the old axiom within the TV industry goes: “Imitation is the sincerest form of Television!” And the [Procedural] Crime Broadcasting System (CBS) has PERFECTED it to a deathly stale, cookie-cutter-forming art! ;-(
Sure, why wouldn’t there be more golden eggs inside the goose?
Are you kidding me? I almost choked when I saw the headline. This show is the worst thing on TV. I felt dumber after watching one episode. But hey 18 million losers can’t be wrong, right.
And to think NBC cancelled JAG after S1. Think of all the revenue JAG>NCIS>NCIS: LA has brought to CBS’ top line. I believe it was an NBC production in S1 and then went to CBS/Paramount.
Your close it was after season 2 that it got canceled by NBC and moved over to CBS
‘Trial by Jury’ was actually a dramatic series. ‘Crime & Punishment’ was the reality show of the franchise. Also, ‘Conviction’ was part of the L&O family.
Mary Tyler Moore>> Lou Grant show
Seriously? JAG was great, NCIS great. NCIS: Los Angeles great. But this concept of living and travelling together come on? What are they going to call it ‘NCIS: On the road?’ Seriously that’s one spin-off too many.
OMG! LOL! I cannot believe this news. I was just talking to friends at work, who also watch the show, and I happened to mention how special the Billy Dee Williams episode was that night. We all agreed and I said to my co-workers, ” It’s time for that amazing show to have another spinoff.” I am so tickled. We just talked about this on Friday morning. I suggested NCIS: Dallas. If they go with that, I will probably fall in the floor. Can’t wait to tell my co-workers we’re getting another NCIS spinoff…. Now if ABC would give us our first Modern Family spinoff???
Big deal we are developing NCIS: Star Wars and it will be on the air in 2013. We will also make NCIS: Disneyland and NCIS: TRON plus NCIS: Modern Family and NCIS: The View. Les Moonves can take his inevitable lawsuit against us and stick it up his you know what.
NCIS: Jersey Shore? LOL
I’m actually happy about the news of the NCIS spinoff. Shane Brennen is one of the best and most underappreciated producers on TV right now, unlike that talentless hack Shonda Rhymes, and anything that gives him the opportunity to have another show on the tube is fine by me. CBS had one of his pilots, King & Maxwell, that was in consideration for this fall, and TNT picked it up. I thought CBS should have gone ahead with it and introduced the characters on one of the NCIS’ to set up a backdoor spinoff for it. However, the key for the new spinoff, just like NCIS and NCIS: LA, is the casting. They have to hire some actors who have chemistry from the get-go.
“unlike that talentless hack Shonda Rhymes”
The vetting process is too stringent on minorities for Shonda to be talentless.
Still love NCIS, but with NCIS: LA i’m severely disappointed: cases all over the map, deep undercover agents showing shields right and left, implausible technology, plot holes much bigger than on average TV procedural. And finally it’s just uninteresting.
CBS got Hawaii 5-0 that very similar show in tone and style, but much more interesting.
But maybe spin-off bring me some consolation.
travelling agents looks like criminal minds all over, but no worries I like that show also
If this works they need to place it in between NCIS AND NCIS: LA and we can have a NCIS night!!!!
I’m kind of skeptical about this one. After Stargate Universe and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior tanked, I am fearful that there will be another spin off that spins out of control. Let’s cross our fingers, folks.
Star Trek: TNG > Star Trek:DS9 > Star Trek: Voyager (quasi spinoff Star Trek: Enterprise) The Next Generation was based off the original Star Trek.
Stargate SG-1 (based off a movie) > Stargate Atlantis > Stargate Universe > Stargate Infinity
Hercules > Xena:Warrior Princess
Dragnet > Adam-12 > Emergency!
What about NCIS: Lisbon?!

Howsabout this for a working title:
NCIS: Cross Country. From what we have here it’s probably not going to stay rooted in one city, so…
Or, even better: NCIS: Vigilante. Or one of the original LA series working titles (one I wish had become the real one, but oh well) – NCIS: Legend.
