BREAKING: Chris Columbus and his 1492 Pictures have closed a fvie-year deal with Michael Witherill’s Rise Entertainment to develop and finance 1492′s films. The deal includes films that Columbus will direct and that he and partners Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe produce under the 1492 banner.
Films on the slate include an adaptation of the Anne Rice novel Christ The Lord, about the formative years of Jesus Christ with script by Betsy and Cyrus Nowrasteh, with the latter aboard to direct; Home Front, an adaptation of the Kristin Hannah novel that Columbus adapted and will direct; and House Of Secrets. Latter is the first acquisition made under the new deal, and it’s the first novel in a trilogy that Columbus has written with Ned Vizzini. Columbus plans to direct that one as well, about three kids lost in a fantasy world trying to find their way home. The first novel will be published by HarperCollins next spring. Columbus is writing that script and plans to get in production early 2014.
“This partnership is a dream come true for all of us at 1492,” said Columbus in a statement. “For years we have searched for partners as supportive and inspired as the group at Rise. Mike and his amazing team will enable us to make films with a wide emotional and commercial range, pictures with deep artistic integrity that will stand the test of time. It also gives us the ability to work with some of finest directors and actors of our generation.”
“We could not be more honored to partner with Chris, Michael and Mark,” said Witherill. “Clearly, films directed by Chris and produced by 1492 Pictures have a track record that speaks for itself. We view ourselves as the supporting cast to fuel the unparalleled creative talent of the guys at 1492.”
Columbus and 1492 Pictures are repped by WME.

Home Alone Front? When can my client start? He needs a new franchise.
Hopefully they won’t get as burnt as CJ Entertainment
I have been waiting for one of Kristin Hannah’s books to be made into a film. This makes the news about “Home Front” even more exciting. This is a long overdue transition of Hannah’s novels to the screen. I can’t wait to see who Columbus casts. I hope that “Homr Front” is just the beginning for her.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Christ The Lord will be a fantastic movie, and will be a film classic that will attract viewers for many years, and be a box office succsess if they are true to the book as it was written by Anne Rice. If not done like Anne Rice wrote it it wont be what the fans want. Thats what happenned with The Queen of the Damned, they strayed so far from the original story that it flopped because it was not like it was written and no one was interested or liked it. I hope 1492 Pictures does it like it was meant to be.
How about a film of the epic fantasy Bloodspiller???
YAY! does this mean he will stop making movies no one wants to see?
One problem with your thoughts on the Anne Rice book — the fans didn’t give a damn about it. Her fan base was basically repelled by it and her overall change in outlook. It was a lame “imagine the mind of” effort; she strayed from her fans and her talent. It’s a stinker, and will be if they make it. Big if. Let’s hope not so this effort doesn’t get started on the wrong foot. Jesus bio-pics should be based on new, accomplished scholarship, not a fading Vampire novelists musings and fascinations because Jesus became her new toy.
