Thor star Chris Hemsworth will not be in American Assassin after all, Deadline has learned. He turned down CBS Films‘ offer to play terrorist hunter Mitch Rapp over scheduling issues, a source says. “The truth is the deal never came together because of timing,” the source said. Hemsworth, who recently signed with CAA, is certainly busy. The actor is reprising his role in Thor 2, then has the Steven Spielberg-directed Robopocalypse and The Avengers 2 on the books. American Assassin is based on the best selling Vince Flynn novel of the same name.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Why not Tom Cruise?
If it does not matter that Jack Reacher is 6’5″ and 250 lbs…why would it matter that 50 year old Tom Cruise is playing Mitch Rapp in his late 20′s.
On the other hand, Tom Cruise probably can’t fit American Assassin into his schedule…damn it!
Tom Cruise? That twerp? Give some lesser-known actors a break. We’re tired of seeing the same non-actors who really cannot act, but are just themselves. In essence, Tom on the screen is seen as Tom, not as the character he plays. Then again, if viewers want to spend $$ to see Tom, not the story’s character… hey, so be it. For many of us, like the upcoming Lincoln film, we are believing we’re seeing the character, not the actor. BTW… Sally Fields should get more PR than what she’s getting. Where’s her agent, manager etc.?
Dang! I liked the Hemsworth idea. The best one I’d heard.
AA is a great book, but I see Channing Tatum as Rapp, not Hemsworth. Flynn is one of the best authors out there and I hope Hollywood does this book justice. As much as possible that is.
CBS = Can’t Buy a Star. Nor can they land a good script or filmmaker while Wolfgang’s somehow head exec there. Please Les, try hiring someone with at least a little bit of knowledge about movies, talent, & material. Don’t wait until Gambit starts torturing audiences here soon.
Please hire amy baer back. she was the real deal. extraordinary measures is my favorite movie.
It’s a shame. Hemsworth would’ve been great. Unlike Tatum, he actually possesses acting chops, depth, and charisma.
I hope Hemsworth can work a few original starring roles into his schedule in order to avoid being known only as “the guy who plays THOR.” I hope ROBOPOCALYPSE puts him over the top, but I would’ve liked to see him take on a non-sci-fi/fantasy action role like this, or perhaps even a good dramatic role. After his movie-stealing ten minutes in JJ Abrams’ STAR TREK, he is capable of anything.
He’ll be starring in Ron Howard’s biopic “Rush” next year! I can’t wait to see him in a non-genre role — he really does have an incredible screen presence.
How about Jim Caviezel as Mitch Rapp?
This is C-List material, any decent actor like Hemsworth would have the common sense to pass… Pretty feeble attempt by CBS to pretend they’d know how to attempt a Bourne-type franchise. Sorry, but Flynn’s material barely good enough for a lesser cable network to do as an original movie.
Bring it on for Benjamin Walker…the guy is perfect for this one!
The biggest problem with Hemsworth is the look. Rapp is dark with a tanned complexion that lets him go undercover in the middle east in many of the plots. Unless they planned to go all sensitive and switch out the bad guys to Scandanavians. Otherwise the physical type does matter.
When I picked up my first Vince Flynn novel well over 5 years ago, I felt the only guy capable of playing Rapp is Eric Bana. It’s a mistake to go younger and show the backstory.
Agree I like him for it too
How about Liam Hemsworth. I think he’s a better fit anyway!
Eric Bana as I agree that darker complexion with his build and black hair is a must.
Helmsworth could have worked with deeper tan but he is not doing it anyway.
No other tall, dark, mysterious actors with an edge.
