UPDATE: No reason for panic, Wonder Woman fans. While the warrior princess character is listed on the breakdown as Iris, not Diana, I’ve confirmed that, as writer Allan Heinberg hinted on Twitter after I posted the story, that is just a code name the producers used to avoid attention. So much for that…
PREVIOUS: To all actresses in their early to mid-20s who are 5’8″ or taller — you may be TV’s next Wonder Woman. I’ve learned that Warner Bros TV, the studio behind the CW drama project Amazon, has hired casting directors Barbara Fiorentino and Danielle Aufiero to launch a search for the lead in the project in anticipation of a potential pilot pickup. A breakdown for the role has been released, providing a glimpse into the Tarzan-like fish-out-of-water premise and the central character of the Wonder Woman origin story written by Allan Heinberg that chronicles the female superhero’s life as a young Amazonian, before she becomes a warrior princess with super powers.
On the breakdown I’ve obtained, her name is Iris (not Diana). “Iris comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.”
The casting search is being done while the script for the project is still being written. It is not unusual for studios to do preliminary casting work on high-profile projects before a green light, especially those whose success hinges on casting the lead. (In the 2011 NBC Wonder Woman pilot, the lead was played by Adrianne Palicki) The CW is having its biggest hit in years this fall with a show about a DC superhero, freshman Arrow, so the network’s desire to try to emulate that success with another comic book-inspired franchise is understandable.

“That Girl” … with a knife!
I keep thinking Alexandra Daddario could make a good young Wonder Woman. Though I’m confused about Iris, as it’s always been Diana?
Alex is pretty but not really Wonder Woman material.
Iris!!!!
WTF!!!!!
…Iris?
Iris?! So basically this isn’t Wonder Woman at all.
WHY isn’t this Diana? Where did they get this “Iris” from? Everything else seems interesting enough but they got the main character’s name wrong! What’s next, a live-action Batman series featuring Smitty Cohen as the Caped Crusader?
Actually, that I would totally watch.
Heinberg has written the Wonder Woman comic, so I’m sure he knows her name. The name of the show is Amazon and not Wonder Woman or Diana, so I guess that leaves it open to using any number of Amazon character. Also, Wonder Woman is a title, and it doesn’t explicity refer to Princess Diana.
Wonder Woman is the title held by an Amazon chosen to come to Man’s World and represent the Amazons. Maybe Iris is this character. Seeing as how the Diana version is going to be in the Justice League movie in 2015 and has her own movie in some stage of development, it makes sense for them not to use her in the show.
“Iris?” So it’s not Wonder Woman at all, is it?
Bridget Regan?
Iris? WTF. Her name is DIANA!!!
And the actress for this rol is Phoebe Tonkin:

maybe Diana will become her common name among mortals when a new trusted friend gives her the name Diana. hence “origin” project.
Or the network and producers were attempting to keep this project under wraps while attempting to cast and Iris is just a codename for the casting release.
Xena: Warrior Princess 2.0
Hopefully she comes out this time.
Wtf!!
I think they just do this shit to piss off long-time fans. “Iris”? No other reason for it.
Wow… First they hint JGL character becoming batman for JLA i.e. no billionaire Bruce, even though they made it obvious that he is Robin (possibly straight into Nightwing seeing as he is solo) now they are renaming WW and giving her the personality of ‘Bones’? Keep it up WB/DC, you are definitely on the right track for taking on Marvel/Disney.
“made it obvious that he is Robin”
No. He is not ‘Robin’ in the sense of the sidekick. His name was Robin. Like his parents had named him that.
John Blake obviously was molded after Tim Drake with some Dick Grayson thrown in there.
This fish-out of water take on “Wonder Woman” is a direct rip-off of Joss Whedon’s rejected script for the Wonder Woman movie that he was hired to direct for Warner Bros., several years ago. Joss said at the time that he wanted to do a fish-out of water characterization on Wonder Woman that would remind viewers of “Splash” and the amazing nature of first-time discoveries for her (much like a child) as she enters our society. BTW, Warner Bros. and Joel Silver happily fired Joss and rejected his script because they claimed that his take on the character wasn’t what they wanted, but now, after the success of “The Avengers”…which Joss directed, they are going back and stealing elements of his script and not giving credit where credit is due!!!!
@Uber Critic – It sure sounds like WB/DC is backtracking on this one. If they are indeed incoroarting ideas stolen from Joss Whedon’s “WW” script, that’s a snake move and serious desperation on their parts. Looking at “The Avengers” monsterous success and how great it turned out to be, you just know WB has to be kicking themselves in the you know what everyday behind closed doors, no matter what lies they say in public. Even if they should decide to go on with this fiasco, we the public will know and it won’t get past us.
Exactly; even if the show ended up being a disaster, they could’ve still packaged it as a superhero show by Joss Whedon. It would’ve sold like hotcakes during the height of The Avengers craze. And longtime Whedon fans like me probably would’ve bought it regardless of whatever the critics’ reception was.
Of course they are stealing it but technically they don’t have to steal it because they own it. Joss was paid to write that script. They can do whatever they want with it. Now if they were smart they would give Whedon credit so they can use his name without his permission to sell the show. They could advertise it as “From Joss Whedon” and there’s nothing he can do to stop that as long as they give him a story credit of some type or a co-created by credit on the show. So yes they stole his best ideas but since they already own his work they can exploit it any way they want to.
WW as a fish out of water has been done before Joss Whedon’s ill conceived script. They touched upon it in the 70′s show, Perez/Potter did amazing stuff with it in her post-crisis relaunch, the animated JL and JL unlimited portrayed her this way and her full length animated movie depicted her this way. They all told this story because its a natural angle to take with the character.
Whedon’s take on her being a fish out of water was wholly not unique so they’re not “ripping off” his story since it was never his to begin with. Whedon did amazing work with Buffy and Angel, Firefly never got the chance it deserved while Dollhouse wasn’t fleshed out enough for an ongoing series but regardless of his résumé and Avengers success he was wrong for WW.
I’m a huge Whedon fan but he is not the first writer to use a fish-out-of-water take on WW. Look at the 80′s Perez run on the WW comic as a prime example. Did Whedon rip off Perez? Also, Warner Bros paid Whedon about $7 million for his script! He was obviously compensated for his work and Warner now owns the rights to the screenplay, including ideas and dialogue. So they can do whatever they want. I actually hope they change their mind and shoot the Whedon script, as is, as a big-budget solo WW movie.
Pretty sure “Iris” is just a code-name for casting. They wouldn’t dare change Diana’s name. They kept Clark Kent for Smallville, Oliver Queen for Arrow. Wonder Woman’s name is Diana or there with be fury!
I agree with you on this one! If they are casting the roll for WW and they haven’t really settled the contract to give the show “the go” yet, then I would think they don’t want to spoil things yet and maybe this is why they are using Iris at the moment. lol I just hope so! Iris is almost sounding like Isis! Anyway yeeeeaaah Amazons!!! Woohoo let it happen!!!!
Hope casting looks at Bridget Regan! The 5’9″ blue eyed Beauty has played a warrior before in LegendOfTheSeeker! Excellent Actress????
I’m thinking that chances are the “Iris” name is just a poor attempt to obscure the project they are casting.
I hope this crap doesn’t go to pilot. It just sounds horrible. I’m hoping the CW and Mark P. are smart enough to move forward with Sleepy Hollow, The Tomorrow People, & Embrace. They sound fantastic and would fit perfectly with The CW’s existing hit series.
The Wonder Woman story should be a theatrical release in 3D. Stick to the original story and have Australian Delta Goodrem star. She’s a living breathing real life version warrior. This story needs to be done a la Iron Man. Why is a movie about a female superhero lead taking soooo long to be put together in an exciting way?
I like the casting search, but, who exactly is Iris? I want Diana and I’m sure most fans feel the same.
Her name is Iris? Then it’s not Wonder Woman. Quit saying it’s Wonder Woman.
Why is everyone so caught up with the name? A name is not a character, it’s just a name. Shouldn’t you be more concerned with how well the character is written and portrayed on screen? You remind me of the people who were furious that fair-skinned Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss Everdeen: “She’s supposed to have olive skin! This movie is gonna suck!”
But why do it? Just call it something else then. Wonder Woman has been around for decades, there’s really no reason not to at least include the name from the source material. On Arrow they changed up a lot, but he’s still Oliver Queen. Just seems odd, no?
Perhaps because there are plenty of olive skinned actresses looking for a break, and the fair-skinned ones don’t need more roles?
the only way this show would be worth watching is if they were smart enough to cast Bridget Regan as ‘Iris’ (should’ve been ‘Diana’ but whatever).. Regan would seriously be PERFECT for the roll, she has the look, experience playing a baddass warrior (from Legend of the Seeker) & she already has a strong fanbase,.. the show would be an instant success.
So please CW casting people, Hire Bridget Regan, and give yourselves anoher hit show.
A bit to old I would think. Its either going to be for guys or girls to watch. Female Croccidle Dundee I would think. But at least its getting away of stuff about vambires, witches, and werewolfs. I see a blond that gets chased by hunky guys, but her beating someone up at times though.
Iris spelled backwards is Siri.
Dead Steve Jobs is obviously behind this claptrap.
