The CW won’t be going forward with freshman medical drama Emily Owens, MD. The network has opted not to pick up additional episodes from the series starring Mamie Gummer, which will wrap production on its 13-episode original order next week. The CW plans to air all produced episodes. The CW’s other two freshman dramas, Arrow and Beauty And The Beast, both received full-season orders. In its most recent airing last night, Emily Owens drew 1 million viewers and a 0.3/1 in adults 18-49, down a tenth from last week. While Arrow has been a breakout hit for the CW, posting big ratings as a 8 PM self-starter on Wednesdays, and Beauty & The Beast has benefited by having the CW’s flagship drama, The Vampire Diaries, as a lead-in, Emily Owens followed the lower-rated Hart Of Dixie, which contributed to it ranking as the CW’s lowest-rated new show.

Thats a decision CW had to make STAT! It’s a good thing too: Smug Justin Hartley needs time off to catch up on Arrow reruns to see the show he’s not on that actually gets ratings
what the heck?! i LOVE both hart of dixie and emily owens!!!!!! so upset right now! i love how networks dont care what the people who actually watch think!
Frankly one of the better pilots out there this last go-around…
Just goes to show, nobody knows anything.
Well exactly… I mean, if you thought it was one of the better pilots.
So true. I LOVE this show — and I generally do not like network TV. I’m more of a PBS gal. So, huge disappointment.
EO’s writing is so good, wonderful characters and chemistry (pun?). Far superior to any other medical show (like the cringe-worthy Grey’s Anatomy, of which I couldn’t stand to watch even 30 seconds, with the simpering Ellen Pompeo. Gag me with a hemostat.)
Plus, I’ve got a girl crush on Mamie Gummer. Rats, rats and double rats.
Totally agree with you. Even on the girl crush. But what else to expect from CW, it only has stupid shows like vampire diaries. What turn of plot can THAT show have?
I heartily agree! I love this show it is so rare to have a nice person in the lead. I guess sadly people do not like nice. i wish it would go on for atleast another season.
What a shame that Emily Owens M.D. has been cancelled. Positive main character and great role-model, Emily Owens is far better than negative, stress-filled Grey’s anatomy (watching season 6 now and already bored of the same drama and romance) or unreal, childish Hart of Dixie. All actors are doing a great job, I believe everything to Mamie Gummer, she is amazing, and as mentioned earlier, love the chemistry in the cast as such. It’s normal it didn’t beat the presidential debate and Hurricane Sandy, those are actually uncomparable, therefore it shouoldn’t be the point on which EO gets cancelled. A big shame, wish it would continue!
so so disappointed this show is cancelled. Think its a great show. Maybe someone better think it over. Just because it not all sex and people running around half dressed they take it off. Tv is getting more and more horrible.
i agree whole heartdly on this …what a great show!
I am sooo upset they cancelled this,I LOVED this show n was looking forward to a good wholesome show. There was a great lead in it and it was a really good show but they have vamp diaries still? I originally liked that show but it’s gotten ridiculous after the 2nd season I mean COME ON! Give us EMILY OWENS M.D. BACK! Totally agree w you on this!
Why did they get ride of Emily Owens!! It was sooo good. I definitely liked it more than Greys Anatomy. Please bring it back!
Are you kidding me?!!! They cancelled EO! It was a show I really liked. It figures people only like those stupid reality shows like Honey Boo Boo, which really bites…Cancel THAT!
Please bring back EO!
I agree with you completely! This is the best show on T.V. right now. Get rid of the other junk that is out there. Keep this show!!!!! I got my son, his girlfriend and a good friend of mine hooked on it too.
I’m so disappointed! This was a great show. Was looking forward to what happens after the season ender. Haven’t been hooked on a medical show like this since the good old days of ER and the first couple of seasons of House. (I couldn’t stand the pathetic Ellen Pompeo of Grey’s). Mamie Gummer is amazing…hoping this show finds a home on another network.
Disappointing news . . . the writing and some of the character development needed some work but Mamie Gummer is delightful. I did keep hoping it would stop feeling like a mash up of Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs.
You took the words right out of my mouth! I was the only one in my family watching it, but I was really enjoying it. When they asked what it was like I told them it was a cross between Grey’s and Scrubs-both of which I loved! I found myself eager for the nexts weeks show and was sad to see it go.
Would have loved if they could have just melded this show into Arrow.
Anytime somebody gets hurt, Arrow takes out his cell and dials up Meryl Streep’s daughter, who sweeps in and patches everyone up.
That’s shame. It’s a really quality show. great writing and good acting. glad they are at least airing the remaining episodes.
good riddance, beauty &beast should be next
TV By the Numbers was right all along. Too bad they had to retract their statement just for someone else to post it again. Hope Justin Hartley finds another job STAT.
As a viewer I applaud them for their development of a Gay charachter in the time they were on the air! Huge fan of the TYRA storyline. Kelly McCreary was an amazing standout this season.
What!?? No more [Scrubs]!!!?? Oh wait….
No surprise here as this show was doomed from the start with an awful storyline, bad acting and terrible reviews. A few more CW shows will probably be joining the fray soon.
Zeke, you write like you know the show, but really, did you watch it, or just want to comment?
not the best show, but worth keeping.
Thank G*D! A truly awful show. How did it make it this long? You know it’s bad when the Telemundo is doing higher ratings…
There’s only one person to blame this one on…and it’s not the studio or the network or the cast. They gave the show runner full creative freedom even when they disagreed with her “vision” for the series. She was allowed to make exactly the show she wanted and she did…unfortunately it was a show no one else wanted to watch.
What did you find wrong with the show?
Thank goodness – it was awful!
NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! It’s a really good show and enjoy the characters. One I always look forward to watching.
Completely agree!!! heartbroken that this show was cancelled
While Ms. Gummer is appealing, the storyline of Emily Owens – a hospital being just like high school -had no way to go but down. One big circle of boring.
have you ever worked in a hospital? the drama is like being back in high school, or worse, middle school.
Actually, I’m a filmmaker and a RN in a big city hospital and I have to agree with what was said in the show. Working in a hospital is worse than High school. This show is great coming from my filmmaker side of me.
Perhaps they could dump the remaining episodes in some other time slot and pair HART OF DIXIE with something that’s a better fit? It’s a popular theory that Dixie didn’t help EMILY, but perhaps EMILY (plus too much Ruby and way too little Lemon) hurt DIXIE as well? Just a thought. There is a God. Love her.
Cute enough show, and Mamie Gummer is great, but such a blatant Grey’s rip-off I don’t know how they weren’t sued.
How was it a rip-off of “Grey’s Anatomy”? Because it was a hospital drama with a female protagonist?
I’ll tell you what’s cute. Anyone who thinks Grey’s Anatomy is original.
Ha!
Not quite a rip-off considering the medical staff of Grey’s has many more personal medical traumas than the people they treat. They keep themselves in business…wishing they could have killed Meredith off the first season.
Too bad. Jennie Snyder Urman is a good tv writer, and deserves a smarter show. She has written for other people’s shows and her episodes are always the better ones. I hope there’s a next time.
Deserves a smarter show? She’s the one who created the show and ran every aspect of it. This was Urman without a safety net and no one to supervise her. Do you really think “next time” would be any better?
I really liked this show. I’m sad that shows don’t even get a chance on the CW anymore while they find an audience and their voice. In a network full of reruns, they should at least finish airing the episodes they have in the can.
The CW can’t handle real drama.
Men in tights and dudes fighting supernatural beings are their forte. Why get serious — their audience hasn’t even hit puberty.
Harsh, but true.
It’s a quirky little show, with three very good characters (Emily, Micah and the attending Bendari)
Arrow is a complete rip-off of every other superhero show, starting with The Scarlet Pimpernel over 100 years ago. With bad acting from the younger generation.
That is so true! The show if for a smarter and more demanding audience. Maybe it should be picked up by another network.
From your lips… I am so going to miss this show.
Gummer is a star. Somebody get her in a holding deal, stat.
Totally agree. I LOVE Mammie Gummer! She is adorable, and I found myself blushing and cringing for her very believable awkward moments, and cheering when things finally went her way! Get rid of the freaking Carrie Diaries, that crap is horrible. And Arrow may be their “leading show” right now, but seriously every episode is the exact same. urgh
I swear I REALLY wish the CW would stop canceling shows so darn fast!! I know they need rating. But it is SOOO hard as a view to start to geting to a show and start to like the characters and all the sudden its canceled after 7 shows REALLY?? in this day and age of DVR and people watching it at a later date thats the new formula for these darn networks to give viewers only a few shows then bye…bye???? What the FUDGE????
Your so right they do it all the time I’m fed up. I will stop watching the center from now on. I loved that show.
Would Mamie Gummer get the Emily Owens lead gig if Meryl Streep weren’t her mother?
Really, really think about it.
My thoughts on Gummer:
She is as “unpretty” (least pretty) as any mainstream, regularly-working actress out there (“mainstream” meaning any actor/actress who was/is leading or playing a major roles in a TV series, and/or similar work in several films.
She’s got an odd, homely — but not ugly — appearance, making her the least pretty mainstream actress out there right now. If someone objects, please submit the candidate. (ugly obscure actresses, especially character actresses who get cast on the basis of their ugliness, don’t count)
I watched one episode of Emily Owens, and there’s nothing exceptional from that episode. It’s not apparent that she has any exceptional acting ability, or even an innate comedic sense of timing — let alone comedic ability. And her “quirkiness” is basically based on facial contortions and physical and mental slapstick.
The Bottom Line is that Emily Owens failed because it could not survive under the weakness of the lead, Mamie Gummer. In particular, she was lacking too much in the “Pretty” department, and just not easy enough on the eyes for a weekly show
That was rude. Mamie Gummer is a beautiful woman. She’s blonde and pretty, she’s not obese, she has a LOVELY voice.. is that not enough for you? What IS mainstream? Big boobs, puffed-up lips and olive skin? Is THAT your definition of somewhat pretty? Everybody can’t look the same; some people need to learn to appreciate that. I don’t think you know what ‘mainstream’ is. And as for everything else that you deliberately used to preach against Gummer.. I’d say you’re jealous. My advice to you is that you take some basic social skills classes, because no one is going to like you if you’re anti-everything. I’m sure you have a few more talents aside from bashing everything just because you can. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you possess narcissistic personality traits and qualities. THAT’S not pretty.
good for you! I couldn’t have said it better myself!! Finally, we had a quality show, and now it gets cancelled….go figure…
At first, I was like, “the main character’s not even that pretty,” but after watching the show, I realized, her character is what matters. She suits the role she’s playing, she’s quirky and relatable. Not someone who’s “mainstream” as you put it.
i totally agree, she was chosen because she wasn’t the classical/mainstream beauty. her look suits the character and although the show isn’t the funniest, or has very smart dialogue, i find the show enjoyable and relaxing.. there are so many intense shows out there, this ones light and relatable.
as far as mamie gummers acting goes it seems realistic and not overacted in terms of her character
all in all i find myself rooting for her n her romance with micah.
You’re an idiot. She’s beautiful and funny. A great actress.
If you actually ‘got’ the show, you would realize that Emily Owens’s character does not call for a very pretty person! Meryl Streep is not beautiful and look how successful she has been. Not every story line calls for ‘beautiful’ or ‘pretty’ or it wouldn’t be believable. How dare you even comment about Mammie Gummer like that! And then to blame the show’s being cancelled because of her. Unbelievable and hateful!
Man, how come is it it so important for you that the main character is beautiful? I really don’t care how pretty the main character is, that’s seriously shallow. And Mammie is far from ugly, she’s beautiful. I think the audience of CW can’t relate to Mammie’s character sufficiently and doesn’t want reality. EO feels more real that the other CW shows, and the audience of CW want more intense drama like arrow and that kind of fake bullshit, which is obviously more fictional and dramatized. Anyway, I totally agree with jean.
I loved this show
I am actually VERY angry at this. I watched this with my mom and my friends would come over to have some pizza and watch the show. It was a great show. I don’t care what anyone says. How did it NOT get enough views? To be honest, I do not believe this is why the show was cancelled. I bet too many of those Evangelical cult people complained about the homosexuality, questioning of faith, adultery and the intersex baby. Look, this is 2012 and nothing about these things are new. This was a great show, and to tell you the truth I am f*cking angry that we didn’t even get a SEASON FINALE. The removal of this show was hasty, uncalled for, and obviously the viewers were not considered. This isn’t fair. BRING IT BACK!!!
I totally couldn’t agree more! I was pissed when I heard it was cancelled. I think it’s extremely unfair. I really liked this show, and I looked forward to the episodes every week!I think the CW has made a big mistake, I think they should have given the show a little more time. Why couldn’t they’ve cancelled stupid “Hart Of Dixie”!? I REALLY want them to bring this show back!
I agree. I look forward to this show every week. I dont watch House or Grey’s Anatomy but for some reason I watch this show. Hart of Dixie? Beauty and Beast? Shoot, why not cancel those shows!!
Why cancel Hart of Dixie? It is a good show with very diverse characters and unlike medical, cop, detective, or law shows, the theme can change from week to week while still developing character story lines. Unlike the aforementioned show categories which must always focus on medical or criminal aspects of life. I get enough of that stuff in the real news! Sometimes people just want a stress free escape from reality or simulated reality. Also, it’s nice to have a show about a small southern town and regular folksy characters. Must every TV show be big city centered and cynical? Three cheers for Hart of Dixie!
So true, I absolutely LOVED this show it was so easy to relate t. I feel as though the viewers were not even put into thought of just ending the show like that without even a season finally. Just ridiculous.
I love the show and will reall miss it and I think Miss Gummer is really good and very pretty.
