News reports say about 1,000 marchers took part in the ‘Million Puppet March’ held Saturday in Washington DC to counter Mitt Romney’s debate pledge that he would end federal funding for Big Bird and public broadcasting.

What is the point? If Romney loses, which is 50\50 it is meaningless. If he wins, then you start with this. Of course if someone points out that Sesame Street is a valuable commodity which will easily flourish on a private channel the whole thing loses some steam, no?
PBS offers a place for children’s programming that isn’t inundated with violence and advertising are all but nonexistent. Various studies show that both are tremendously detrimental to young minds, specifically the age group that’s watching sesame street.
Putting this valuable commodity on some other network defeats the purpose. This show remains principled by having the freedom to create content by focusing on kids, not on value, revenue (which it already generates plenty of from it’s powerful brands) or, until now, politics.
Wow. Some people have lots of time on their hands. So sad.
Romney’s a complete imbecile idiot, and PBS should not be cut. But don’t you think these people could have put their time to better use by helping the hurricane victims?
This is an example of why the dems will lose on Tuesday. They are fundamentally unserious, focusing on non-issues like this instead of the economy. Binders full of Big Bird.
Stupid idea for no good reason…PBS does not need the government money you fools.I’m surprised even a thousand showed up..the pictures do not indicate even that tiny amount of people.
^This. Regardless of who wins the election, Sesame Street is going NOWHERE. If PBS were shut down, how quickly would Sesame Street get snatched up by another network? AND for how much? This seems like such a knucklehead response to a completely nonissue.
I think everyone is missing the point. This march is highly symbolic. Mitt Romney is an intelligent person with a great career. I just don’t see him translating his business acumen to political success. He has changed his mind so many times its impossible to get a handle on what he truly stands for. I applaud business week and mayor Bloomberg forgetting global warming back onthefront pages again
I like how people seem to think PBS will die without government funding. They get plenty of donations from viewers, they have corporate sponsors and Sesame Street is a cash cow. PBS is not going anywhere no matter who’s in the White House.
Do they know how stupid they look? About a thousand people showed up, how many of them do ya think work for PBS?
If these people were serious about “saving PBS” from politicians they’d acknowledge these facts:
1. Taxpayer dollars only cover about 20% of the PBS budget.
2. Sesame Street is very profitable, thanks to merchandising, raking in tens of millions of dollars a year. So it will survive, even commercial free, even if PBS is magically shut down by some new power Romney gets if he’s elected. So will Masterpiece Theater, Nova, American Experience, and the Ken Burns documentaries via other funding sources.
3. The protesters could be raising money to cover the 20% from the government so the network would be truly public and could never be used as a political football ever again. Ask George Lucas, he’s got a little extra lucre lying around to fund educational type stuff.
The New York and New Jersey coasts are turning into Katrina times ten, and the libs are all up in arms over 1 percenter Big Bird.
Tuesday’s your chance to make your voices heard.
If left to people like you, New York and New Jersey would continue to suffer for years, because you’d shut down FEMA too.
yet FEMA right now is in big trouble. running out of everything. I thought Obama had FEMA’s back?
Actually, I would prefer spending money on FEMA and disaster relief than Big Bird.
The funny thing is… on Tuesday, the majority of voters in NY and NJ are going to pull the lever for the very administration that’s currently screwing them over.
I think its great they did this..it put something good in the news which we haven’t had in awhile. There’s always something about someone killing someone. I think it shows that there is still some fun out there even with all the bad happening around us.
People can have MANY things on their minds @fed up. From a little rally to volunteering, donating and voting…showing up to a symbolic reunion doesn’t take away from important issues. People can multi task, you know?
but the cookie monster promotes bad eating? no? then why call him the cookie monster?
“Cookie Monster is a Muppet on the children’s television show Sesame Street. He is best known for his voracious appetite and his famous eating phrases: “Me want cookie!”, “Me eat cookie!”, and “Om nom nom nom” (said through a mouth full of food). He often eats anything and everything, including danishes, donuts, lettuce, apples, bananas, as well as normally inedible objects. However, as his name suggests, his preferred food is cookies. Chocolate chip cookies are his favorite kind; oatmeal cookies are his second favorite. In a song in 2004, Cookie Monster revealed that, before he ate his first cookie, he believes his name was Sid. Showing awareness of healthy eating habits for children, since 2006 he has said that cookies are “a sometime snack” and that he also likes fruits and eggplant.”
so why not call it the 1000 puppet march?
and yet these marchers are called “puppets”?
nuff said.
Society is nothing but “puppets”!
I think the point of the march is to highlight how Romney is so disconnected from what a big chunk of America (47% sound familiar?) finds important. PBS is an important part of America’s history by providing news and supplementing our children’s education. Seems like he was picking on the wrong channel.
