Diablo Cody, whose first TV series, Showtime’s United States Of Tara, was produced by DreamWorks TV, is back in business with the company (now called Amblin Television) with a new series project, this time on the broadcast side.
Alex + Amy, a romantic comedy spec by the Oscar-winning writer (Juno), landed at ABC with a script commitment plus penalty. Amblin TV is producing with Warner Bros. TV. Alex + Amy is about a romance between an ambitious 22-year-old Millennial guy and a 32-year-old Gen X woman who have just moved in together and are very much in love. Cody is executive producing with her manager Mason Novick and Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
Falvey and Frank remained close with Cody after the end of Tara and had been looking to do another show together. She gave them her Alex + Amy spec, which the two developed with her before taking it to Warner Bros. TV and then to the broadcast networks. Alex + Amy is one of several projects Amblin TV has set up at the broadcast networks, including two other comedies at ABC from writers Cheryl Holiday and Chris Sheridan. Cody and Amblin TV are with WME.

Wait is 32 gen x anymore? I’m 1981 at 31 and was under the impression I was Generation Y.
No, 32 is NOT Gen X. You’re Gen Y and the current young pups are the Millenials.
Now take off my flannel shirt, I just washed it in 1995.
I love the “+” in the title! It’s chic and different. It’s like an early holiday present!
Fliipdi-skibbit!!! Can’t wait to catch a grip on scads of that finger-poppin’ jive talk!
You win the message board.
They better use “toss me your digits” in place of “what’s your phone number” if they do this the show will be a smash.
And what is special and distinctive about this?
What’s so special about:
a bunch of people hang out in a boston bar.
friends live across the hall from each other in nyc.
three neurotics and a weirdo in nyc.
etc etc.
perhaps it’s in the writing?
Nothing. It’s cougar-bait, wish-fulfillment, fodder for female Gen-Xers. The “ambitious 22 year-old” is code for, “inordinately financially successful younger man.” It’s meant to signal loud and clear to 35-plus aged females, “We’re gonna make a show appealing to cougar daydreams.”
Fifty Shades of Grey meets How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I think I’ll pass.
32 is not Gen X unless this is a period piece.
Seriously. Emperor’s new clothes anyone?
Referring to Mase as a manger is kind of ignorant. The guy has produced a number of non-diablo projects that are quite good including (500) DAYS OF SUMMER. Just sayin’…
Mason Novick is a manager. I don’t care if he has a producer credit on CITIZEN KANE, he is a middle man who has no creative talent, and he should collect his 10% and refrain from posting on message boards looking for respect. Have some tact, “Mase.”
You very clearly don’t know him so S-T-F-U.
Just because he thought your script was garbage doesn’t mean that he “has no creative talent”. Despite the guy’s quirkiness, he has a good eye for talent and material. You might get a little if you’d focus on the work and not DEADLINE message board’s.

PS – Accuse me of being “Mase” and I’ll punch you in the dick.
PS again – Yes, people that know him DO actually call him that.
Gen X is baby boomers until early 80s so her being Gen X and being 32 is wrong. But then again this is what we’ve come to expect from Diabo Cody. She was paid a fortune for her rewrite work on Burlesque and handed in a script that had minimal changes.

Collect the penalty, Diablo. This won’t make the schedule.
Enjoyed ‘Tara’ first season.
After that it was all one-note.
Thank god. Finally a comedy from a woman’s point of view. Sarcasm.
So much pathetic hate and resentment on this board.
GET IT, CODY! Flibberty-skib in your awesomesauce all day! Love Cody.
haters: the your predictability is boring.
Not the biggest Diablo Cody fan in this solar system but I admire her pluck, moxie and success, thriving in an industry that is notoriously harsh on assertive and talented women. But the hate spewed EVERY DAMN TIME there is a Diablo Cody post on Deadline is becoming jejune and repetitive and, well, just plain ol stupid. Whatever happened to the old kindergarten rule of “when you have nothing nice to say…”
The cascading vitriol against Ms. Cody is getting ridiculous.
Write on, Ms. Cody, write on! Just write better, please!
Among her detractors, I am not jejune. I am *very* june.
Right Woody?
