This is so unfair to the Caucasian males! It’s discrimination!
Yeah! They don’t get any breaks!
Getting into this business is hard… for any ethnicity or gender. To create an award based on criteria other than quality is to demean the winner. And talent is not based on ethnicity. If anything, base it on income or resources… someone with a 300k budget is going to make a more polished film than someone with 5k. But there are plenty of caucasian male filmmakers without rich uncles or parents in the industry.
How about gay and transgender directors? That should definitely be another recognized category.
I agree with john. These awards are disgraceful and racist. The way around this stupidity is to do what the Nicholl Fellowship does which is just to award 5 winners. No ranking. 5 winners for the east coast and 5 winners for the west.
Or why not just have the White Award for east coast and the White award for west coast.
They do. It’s called “Every Other Award That Exists”.
Congrats to the filmmakers. A special congratulations to the beautiful and talented Talibah Newman. And to any commentators that have something to say about Caucasians being excluded from this award, you all are not really prepared to have an intellectual discussion about race and entertainment.
The first step to removing discrimination is to
STOP MAKING IT AN ISSUE.
These rewards are stupid. I’m all for social equality. But giving people their own “special awards” based on their genetic makeup only further promotes division based on those same distinctions.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
What if you’re half Asian and half Jewish? How about if you’re Barack Obama? What category would he get? This is stupidity. Just have 5 winners and make them all equal. No ranking.
How about an award for the poorest filmmaker who was able to make a film on his/her own without any nepotistic help or a rich sugar mama/daddy?
