DirecTV CEO Mike White is no stranger to taking a stand against rising programming costs, pulling 16 Viacom channels off his service during the summer for 10 days before reaching a carriage deal. Now his company and Dish Network are the lone pay TV providers serving Southern California who don’t have an agreement to carry the LA Lakers’ newly created TV homes: Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes. The satellite companies are balking at the $3.95-per-sub-per-month price that TWC reportedly wants. (Verizon, AT&T, Charter and, as of today, Cox Communications have made deals and are carrying the channels.) DirecTV, with about 1.2 million subs in SoCal, also is holding out on making a deal for a third rookie regional sports net, the Pac-12 Networks. It says that costs are out of control. (A fine Sports Business Journal report on the LA mess calculates providers must pony up about $10 per sub per month to carry all the RSNs in town). White was, well, direct during his company’s earnings call yesterday when asked about negotiations. Sounds like the Lakers, who play their fifth game of the season tonight in Utah, won’t be on DirecTV anytime soon:
In terms of Los Angeles, I think it’s another example of how broken this system is. People take the same content, package it up, bid it up for 3 times the national average on a per-game basis and then try and stick it back to the other distributors in the geography. And I think that’s very unfortunate. We have a system of very carefully tracking churn by day to look at kind of what we think our customers will be most interested in. We are continuing to have active discussions about the Lakers network. We hope to have a deal on that content. But all of these new channels that – everybody here wants a new channel and they want to stick it into the bundle, is not right. I mean we are taxing most of our customers who wouldn’t be willing to pay for that content. And I’ve said before, I think the regional sports network structure in the industry is broken. And it is. But I’m probably not going be able to change that overnight. But adding other stuff to the bundle that the average consumer can’t pay for without allowing it to be sold to those that want to pay for it is just not right. So we’ll continue to stand strong for our customers. I’ve got to represent the majority of our customers, not just the few that want to send me an email. And I’m trying very hard to do that in a disciplined way. But, I don’t know that they’re getting more difficult. … I mean and I don’t expect that to change for the foreseeable future. I think we’re going to continue to see very, very tough discussions by all distributors with content providers to try and mitigate these outrageous cost increases that are unaffordable to the average customer.
Stay tuned for when the LA Dodgers’ TV rights are thrown in the mix — they will only add to the asking price of whatever network wins them.

The Lakers should try winning a game before they ask me to pay $10 to see them lose YET again.
He’s right, consumers aren’t willing to pay for the inflated greed of sports franchises. I don’t care about sports one iota, and the absurd way sports is driving up cable/dish costs is a major reason why I am no longer a cable/dish customer. Good luck ever winning me back.
I don’t watch sports, but have paid for ESPN forever. Why ?
2 words: NFL Network. Enough said. TWC sucks
Directv lady is right. Who wants to watch these guys play like shit anyway? And I’ll just
Go to the rose bowl and see UCLA football! Directv and TWC can fuck off.
“I don’t watch sports, but have paid for ESPN forever. Why ?”
Because Disney realized that they could extort more money out of all cable customers by holding their other desirable channels hostage. a cable/sat provider can’t survive without ABC, ABC Family, Disney channel etc, so they have no choice but to include ESPN in the base package bundle and charge everyone for what is the most expensive basic cable channel on the dial.
It could be worse though. Microsoft just got a patent that let’s them charge per viewer for content, not just household. We could see a future where the more people sitting in front of your TV, the more it will cost.
I agree that if you want all the sports packages or movie channels or if you are a chief and want 6 different cooking/food channels you should be able to pick those channels and pay for them.
The business is broken if none sports fans have to pay $10-$20 dollars more per month to pay for channels they will never watch or know where they are on the dial. I am a sports fan and yes, I pay for all of them because I am into that area. But, if my bill could be cheaper without specific channels I would be happy.
something also needs to be done about the stupid and outdated blackout rules.
With out all the non sports viewers subsidizing sports channels, unless you only sub to a couple channels your bill would be more expensive.
Take for example, ESPN, at around 6 dollars per subscriber, across nearly 100 million cable/sat accounts, if you let people opt out of paying it, to make the same amount of money, Disney would have to charge individual subscribers A LOT more (maybe even more expensive than HBO), and you can bet that they are gonna fight tooth and nail to keep their gravy train running. No channel owner wants to make less money than they do now.
“People take the same content, package it up, bid it up for 3 times the national average on a per-game basis and then try and stick it back to the other distributors in the geography.”
Gee, I wonder why some sports franchise hasn’t added “*ing” to their name, like “New York *ing Jets”?
That move really works well for gettting people to watch shows on entertainment TV. Not.
I don’t care WHAT he sais..GIVE ME MY LAKERS! I don’t know who to be more mad at… TWC, Direct TV or the Lakers organization for leaving there fans victim to this bullSh*%?? Whomever is at fault, Direct TV is going to suffer because I’m close to dumping them and I know I’m not alone! Born in this great city and have fond memories of a kid going to Lakers games. This is just BS!!!
I agree. The schedule showed NBAHD was carrying the game Spurs/Lakers. They allowed us to watch the pre-game and then blocked out the game? And then a popup to sign up for League Pass takes over which doesn’t even carry the Lakers. This is bogus, I’m pissed.
Give the Direct Tv customers a heads up and the option to decide if they wanna pay more. I dont have time to be calling my cable provider, plus wait 10-20 mins on the line just to hear a bunch of ” B.S”. I am a Lakers fan and I find cheaper to watch games at home than to go somehwere and watch it. Yes, I would pay an extra $10 a month, but give that option. Direct Tv lost another customer!!!
I’m a diehard laker fan and already pay for a bunch of BS channels from DirecTv..I want this channel n might cancel DirecTv without it
I think the lakers should go back to prime ticket and channel 9. if they cant reach a angreement with dish net.
You do understand TW owns the rights for the next 20 years…..
Dish net better hurry up to reach an agreement. because me and my neighbor are going to change cable providers
I’d really like to see the Lakers. It’s one of the reasons that I chose DirecTV. Can anyone tell me how I switch back to COX without suffering the penalties from DirecTV. It seems very unfair that they would discontinue the main shows I want to watch and still require me to stay with them.
Funny, I just unsubscribed to some programming (HBO etc). Downgraded by one package and now I have Charter Cable and DirecTV (I wouldn’t have DTV is they did not have the Sunday Ticket).
I already pay for a sports pack over $9 to see the Laker home games in the past but now I can’t. Did Direct TV give customers a discount when the viacom channels were blacked out as well as other times. I don’t buy Mr. White’s explanation. My Direct TV bill is higher than my dads and he has all the channels I have with his TMC servics. I’m disappointed!
There is two more things that Direct TV doesn’t provide, access to ESPN on the Go and the Pac 12 network! My dad (with TWC)has access to both. Still pays less per month than I do.
I don’t give a damn if I have to pay more to watch the games just make a deal already and give it only to the people who want it .
I love my lakers win or lose. If I got to pay for them then I will pay. not being able to at least have that option is plain dumb. Further more the Direct Tv CEO must not be a sports fan. I am ready to drop Direct Tv due this problem. This CEO if going too far. Start your stand on something else. Not my lakers. Every other cable provider as signed up with TWC. I really don’t know what the big deal is since every other provider has already agreed to terms, the only two that have not come to terms. Is the two satellite companies. I would expect this from Dish, but not Direct tv if this continues. I Wil be canceling with Direct Tv.
